This paper describes a design customization system that integrates two aspects of Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) that are usually developed in separate workflows: the algorithmic generation of designs and the detailed representation of the building. The system's workflow starts with the definition of shape grammar rules by an architect. The rules are then automatically imported into a user interface that allows future owners to interactively custom-design their apartment plans. Finally, the plans are automatically converted into detailed Building Information Models (BIM), which allow the architect to add custom finishes, estimate building costs, and automatically generate construction drawings. We conclude that our workflow could contribute to the real customization of houses and other simple architectural programmes, assuring the quality of the outcomes through shape grammars rules and at the same time reducing the cost of production drawings through automation. The paper ends with some suggestions of improvements in BIM software that would allow its integration with shape grammars and the implementation of our workflow in a simpler way.
Prospects of Plan Generation in Architecture
Prospects of Plan Generation in Architecture, 2017
The idea of systemizing architecture can be traced back to ancient times. With the introduction of computer-aided design, one can attempt to standardize and generate buildings. This report analyzes previous research done on automated generation of floor plans and speculates on the perspectives of it in the current and future market. A lack of commercially available generators was identified and therefore research was directed towards theory and preliminary practice of automated architecture. Along with previous research, the report also mentions possible tools to create and/or integrate a plan generator into one’s workflow. The report exhibits four different approaches towards establishing a foundation for a potential software. A fifth method is later presented and explained as a combination of the four. The subject is speculated and argued to be a viable, yet risky investment. A survey was conducted on the matter, with partially negative results towards the theory, yet with positive outlook for a finished product in the future. It is possible that plan generation will become an inevitable trend, if not movement, in the industry.
FPL_Gen: A Computational Tool for Generating Flexible Plan Layouts
In the field of housing construction the unique and tailor-made design and manufacturing has left its place to uniformity and repetition with mass housing. Mass manufacturing and individual design -the two positive aspects in design and productioncome together in mass customization. Mass customized housing projects have great potential and it is easier now to design computer tools with promising features. Different approaches can be implemented in these tools and defined relationships and design decisions can be computerized in order to obtain various solutions. In this paper, a design method and a computational tool for generating mass customized housing plan layouts with "Open Building" approach is detailed in which design flexibility and mass customization have been taken into consideration for basic design decisions.
Irregular architectural layout synthesis with graphical inputs
This paper presents a method for automatically constructing irregular floor plans. Given image patterns, the program produces a variety of layouts that satisfy users' geometric and topological requirements. The program extracts irregular regions from images via statistical region merging. It employs subgraph matching and simulated annealing to construct topologically feasible layouts. Methods for measuring similarities between the desired templates and irregular rooms are also reported. Applications using raster images and vector graphics are tested. Both applications generate feasible floor plans whose appearances resemble the input patterns. The results indicate that layout automation is valid without an orthogonal framework in the plane. Irregular layout synthesis allows architects to instantly implement visual preferences in early design stages.
Planform: An open environment for building planners
2002
1. Background Automated Planning has been a central research area in arti cial intelligence (AI) for over thirty years. Its major concern is the development of algorithms which reason with knowledge structures containing representations of actions in order to produce correct, e cient plans meeting a set of input goals. AI Planning is increasingly being exploited in high-pro le projects such as the $66 mARPI'Advanced Planning Technology Initiative 1] focused on militarycrisis action planning'. This started in 1989 and is now in its fourth phase.
Automation in Construction, 2007
The current trend towards globalization forces the AEC community to change its practical approach from a non-systematic, labor-intensive to a systematic one. Based on the paradigm shifted from 'drawing' to 'constructing' in architectural design practice, this paper focuses on developing a new type of CAD system that automatically constructs and manages well-structured floor plans with minimum geometrical input from the designer. The paper also took advantage of the building data models developed from the prior research. The model includes hierarchical building components such as 'building', 'plan', 'space', 'ring', 'wall skeleton', 'surface', 'column', etc. The creation algorithm developed assures a semantically rich and structurally correct floor plan at any point in the design process. In particular, the floor plan constructed through the design process contains spatial information as well as other design information about the building components. Thus, the system effectively manages spatial design information in the real-time basis. Since the system implemented on the basis of the algorithm is the very first step toward a complete intelligent CAD system, research and development issues to be considered next are identified at the end of the paper.
ArchHouseGenerator – A Framework for House Generation
Journal of Virtual …, 2010
The manual creation of virtual environments is a demanding and costly task. With the increasing demand for more complex models in different areas, such as the design of virtual worlds, video games and computer animated movies the need to generate them automatically has become more necessary than ever. This paper presents a framework for the automatic generation of houses based on architectural rules. This approach has some innovating features, including the implementation of architectural rules, and produces 2D floor plans as well as complete 3D models, with a high level of detail, in just a few seconds. To evaluate the framework two different applications were developed and the output models were tested for different fields of application (e.g. virtual worlds). The results obtained contain evidences that the proposed framework may lead to the development of several specific applications to produce accurate 3D models of houses representing different realities (e.g. civilizations, epochs, etc.).
