An Integrated Approach for Product Service System Development: II. Evaluation Phase
Product service system (PSS) contains service as well as product and is considered as an important means to achieve higher level eco-efficiency. Many studies have contributed to new PSS design and evaluation in the last decade. This study proposes a two-phase integrated PSS design and evaluation approach by integrating new tools and procedures. This paper presents methods in phase I: design phase. Following the proposed approach, users could generate idea and concept generation, design factors determination and supporting system design. A companion paper in this issue focuses on evaluation phase where market response, triple bottom line performance and life cycle assessment could be obtained. Three methods for PSS design is herein presented step by step along with illustrative examples. It could be used by companies or consultants that are interested in PSS development. Government can also use the methods for making appropriate policies.

Due to the shift from products to services and the resulting gain of importance in planning product-service systems (PSS), a reliable decision process for the planning phase of PSS is essential. In this paper, we defined requirements for such a decision process by analyzing several decision processes for early stages of product and service development from literature. Interpreting their advantages and disadvantages reveals that none of the approaches fulfills all requirements needed for planning PSS. For this reason, we built a decision process by combining and extending elements of existing decision processes. The result is a process model, which facilitates to adapt requirements and characteristics several times. Unlike other approaches from literature, this process provides a higher customer integration, adaptable requirements list and it considers services, tangible products and PSS-infrastructure. To identify weaknesses and strengths of our decision process, we conducted a smal...
Review of Product-Service System Design Methods
IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, 2016
Many researchers have been recently approached the integration of products and services since its relevance in modern industrial scenarios. Despite several authors investigated such topics and defined methods to support companies in product-service ideation and design, they proposed methodologies tailored on specific issues: PSS assessment, requirements elicitation, functional modelling, etc. Anyway, neither of them has found an integration among almost of such methods. This paper presents a review of the current literature approaching PSS design and assessment along the last fifteen years. This due to there are different perspectives to frame PSS. According to this context, the paper gives an overview of PSS development in manufacturing industry, laying the groundwork for designers to develop an integrated tool able to incorporate some of the design methodologies and support manufacturing companies involved in the proposal of the PSS instead of traditional product.

Product Service System (PSS) is one of the procedures used to control the environmental problems arising from products and demand for product consumption. The method is aimed at creating a business system that sells products and boosts services for the maximum benefit of consumers. However, the PSS concept has many dimensions in the context of economy, society, and environment which are prioritized differently. This research is aimed at studying the literature review of PSS based on the environmental significance. The objective of this research is to analyze and classify the PSS factors in the environmental dimension and explain the factors affecting the creation of PSS strategy. Keywords: Product Service System; Design for Environment; Product Service Design Strategies; Sustainable Consumption.ISSN: 2398-4287© 2017. Revisiting the Research Field of Product-Service Systems Development
Volume 3: 38th Design Automation Conference, Parts A and B, 2012
ABSTRACT The research within the Product-Service Systems (PSS) field aims to support manufacturing industries' ability to provide value in terms of a service offer to its customers, simultaneously taking a more holistic approach to ecosustainability. The industrial idea of providing customer benefits in parallel with robust products is not new, yet equipping engineers to conduct innovation and applying a service perspective in the early design stages is noticed as fairly radical. The purpose in this paper is two-fold. First, to describe ...
Product-Service-System Modeling Method
Domain-Specific Conceptual Modeling, 2016
This paper addresses enterprise modeling needs, in a specific field of industrial management: the design and management of industrial product-service-systems. During the last decade, the industrial sector has undergone a change of the business model, through an increasing internalisation of service activities in manufacturing companies. The objective of this chapter is to develop a generic metamodel, which could be used to further develop IT support solutions for the design and lifecycle management of product-service-systems. The specification of this metamodel together with the associated modeling method are explained then illustrated on an industrial case study. Keywords Metamodeling ⋅ Modeling method ⋅ Product-service systems ⋅ Scenarios of product-service-systems ⋅ Manufacturing servitisation The need for a modeling method dedicated to the so-called product-service-systems (PSS) has been directly pushed by changes in the industrial business. During the last decade, the manufacturing industry has undergone a paradigm shift through the development and spread of servitisation and PSS concepts. From the point of view
Product–service system engineering: From theory to industrial applications
Computers in Industry, 2012
The recent macro-economic events have contributed to an increased awareness of the strategic relevance deriving from the provision of services related to products as an economic remedy for facing the sharp downfall of the markets. The result is a sudden and steep accumulation of empirical knowledge coming out from the various and dispersed "lessons learned" which managers and engineers are currently experiencing in supporting the transition of their companies to a Product-Service orientation.
Investigating Sustainability Assessment Methods of Product-service Systems
Procedia CIRP, 2015
Product services systems (PSS) provide a promising opportunity for industries to propose both prosper and eco-friendly solutions to fulfill consumer needs. By shifting from traditional offer, comprised of physical products, to an integrated solution of product and services, it is assumed that PSS may reduce the environmental impact and provide benefits for the PSS provider and the consumer in economic and social ways. However, sustainability is not intrinsic characteristic of PSS. Operational methods and tools are needed to help companies develop such business models and support customer choices relating to PSS contracts. Although there are already well established assessment methods in literature, such as Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing, there is still a lack of evidences from the particular field of PSS. Further on, most of existing methods and tools dealing with PSS assessment are based on qualitative parameters, which are subjective and hard to evaluate, and do not provide detailed views of the results. This paper analyses this piece of literature (i.e. relating to PSS assessment) to emphasize similarities and differences between available methods and tools. The aim is to identify the issues underpinning the development of methods for sustainable design in the particular case of PSS.
