Backstepping Control for MPPT and UPF of a Three Phase Single Stage Grid Connected PV System
International Journal of Robotics and Automation (IJRA) , 2018
This paper presents a new control methodology of a three phase grid connected photovoltaic system without using the intermediary DC/DC converter. Based on the synchronized nonlinear model of the whole photovoltaic system, two controllers have been proposed for the three-phase inverter in order to ensure the operation of the PV system at the maximum power point with unity power factor and minimum grid disturbance. Grid synchronization has been ensured by a three-phase 2nd order PLL (Phase-Locked Loop). The stability of each controller is demonstrated by means of Lyapunov analysis and evaluated under changing atmospheric conditions using the Matlab/Simulink environment, the simulation results clearly demonstrate the performance provided by each controller.

This article presents a robust non-linear control technique of the three-phase photovoltaic system. The structure chosen for this PV system is that of two power converters and DC voltage intermediate bus. The two power converters are: the DC-DC converter and the three-phase inverter, which requires two main controllers. These controllers have three main objectives. The first objective is to impose the PV voltage generated by the photovoltaic panel, in order to follow a maximum reference voltage provided by the MPPT block. The second one is to maintain the DC link voltage to a constant value, in order to optimize the transfer of energy between the two power converters. The last objective is to inject a three-phase sinusoidal current into the grid, while respecting a unit power factor. With the intention to achieve these three objectives, we designed cascading nonlinear controllers by using the technique of non-linear backstepping control in the synthesis of these two controllers, bas...
A novel nonlinear controller design of three-phase grid-tied photovoltaic system
International Journal of Power Electronics and Drive Systems (IJPEDS), 2024
This paper explores the challenges associated with the control of a two-stage three-phase electrical grid connected to a photovoltaic (PV) system. The core control objectives encompass: i) Maximizing the utilization of available power from the PV panel; ii) Regulating the DC-link voltage to a predetermined reference; and iii) Ensuring power factor correction (PFC) on the grid side. To achieve these objectives, two loops nonlinear controller are developed. In the outer loop, the duty cycle of a boost converter is controlled using integral backstepping technique with the perturb & observe (P&O) algorithm, which provides reference voltages to track maximum power points, and Lyapunov theory to ensure the system’s stability. In addition, the Inner loop is designed using proportional integrator (PI) controller to ensure the unit power factor correction. An assessment of the proposed method is conducted through a comparative study with the backstepping technique, demonstrating the effectiveness of the suggested solution. The results have been validated by numerical simulation within MATLAB/Simulink power systems environment.

This paper presents a new control strategy of a photovoltaic system, which consists of a photovoltaic generator PVG coupled to a three phase load and three phase grid by a three phase voltage source inverter VSI without DC-DC converter. The controller is designed by using Backstepping method based on d-q transformation of a new model of the global system. The main goals of this control strategy are to achieve the maximum power point MPPT with very good precision and the unity power factor in level of the grid power flow. Mathematical analysis demonstrate the asymptotic stability of the controlled system and simulation results proved that the controller has achieved all the objectives with high dynamic performance in presence of atmospheric condition changes. Moreover, the proposed controller shows a very good robustness under system disturbance, which presents the most important advantage of this controller compared to the other control strategies. Furthermore, this controller can o...

This paper presents a nonlinear control in the stationary αβ reference frame for single-stage three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic systems. The system under study consists of a photovoltaic generator (PVG), a three-phase inverter, and an LCL-filter on the grid side. The main control objectives are to extract the maximum power from the PVG and deliver that power into the grid with high-quality power i.e. unity power factor (UPF). In order to achieve these objectives, a nonlinear controller is designed by using backstepping technique. The performance of this controller is evaluated under standard and variable atmospheric conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller has successfully met all the specified objectives. This study highlights the potential of using the nonlinear control based on backstepping technique in photovoltaic systems with LCL-filters. The modeling and simulation of the complete system are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink environment.
Nonlinear control and stability analysis of single stage grid-connected photovoltaic systems
International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, 2020
This work presents the control development of a single stage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system. The topology used by the PV system consists of two PV panels, a single-phase half-bridge inverter using two DC link capacitors, and an LCL filter in the grid side. The aim is to design a nonlinear controller to ensure simultaneously the following three objectives: (i) PV panels to provide their maximum power, (ii) balanced power exchange by regulating the DC link voltage, and (iii) power factor correction, i.e. grid current in phase with grid voltage. In order to fulfill these objectives, a multi-loop controller is designed by using back-stepping and Lyapunov approaches for the power factor correction objective and a filtered PI regulator to ensure the power balance between the grid and the PV panels. The controller performances are formally analyzed using an average large signal model. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by means of simulation results in MATLAB/ SimPowerSystems environment.

The controller objectives are threefold: i) ensuring the Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in the side of PV panels, ii) guaranteeing a power factor unit in the side of the grid, iii) ensuring the global asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. Based on the nonlinear model of the whole system, the controller is carried out using a Lyapunov approach. It is formally shown, using a theoretical stability analysis and simulation results that the proposed controller meets all the objectives.
The Modified Control Method for the Single-Stage Three-Phase GridConnected Photovoltaic System
Science and Technology Development Journal, 2013
Single-stage topology and the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm have advantages such as simple configuration and high efficiency in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. In conventional systems, current and voltage sensors of PV system are normally used for MPPT. This paper presents a modified control algorithm for the single-stage three-phase grid-connected PV system without PV current sensor with a variable step MPP-tracker. This algorithm is not derived from complex state equations and is not dependent on any circuit parameters. It simply calculates the output power of the inverter to replace the input power of the PV systems in the MPPT algorithm. The modified algorithm is simulated by using Matlab/Simulink software and implemented in the experimental prototype. With the single-stage configuration and PV current sensorless method, the prototype is suitable for lowcost high efficient implementation in the practice.

This paper presents a robust control strategy for a grid connected photovoltaic system with a boost converter by using an integral Backstepping method based on a nonlinear state model, which guarantees the Lyapunov stability of the global system. The system has tracked precisely the maximum power point, with a very fast response and the unit power factor has been observed under different atmospheric conditions. Moreover, the best advantage of the controller is that it's a good corrector of the grid perturbation and system parameter disturbance. The simulation result has demonstrated the performance of this strategy.

A novel nonlinear backstepping controller based on direct current (DC) link voltage control is proposed in three-phase grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to control the active and reactive power flow between the PV system and the grid with improved power quality in terms of pure sinusoidal current injection with lower total harmonic distortion (THD), as well as to ensure unity power factor, or to compensate for reactive power required by the load, i.e., the electrical grid. The output power of the PV array is supplied to the grid through a boost converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control and an inverter. Simulation results of the proposed controller show good robustness under nominal conditions, parameter variations, and load disturbances, which presents the main advantage of this controller as compared to an existing controller. The performance of this work was evaluated using a MATLAB/Simulink environment.
