Iran and Kazakhstan Relations: A Geopolitical Analysis
Kazakhstan needs the short transit route leading to open waters to supply its demands and export oil and gas to international markets. Iran's territorial status in the heart of Eurasia, has offered new capabilities for commerce, industry, and development to this country. But some factors such as the geopolitics of the region, having the second largest resources of energy in the world, and willingness to allow the presence of trans-regional powers with the aim to reduce dependence on Russia and attract foreign investment, has resulted in the presence of these powers in this country and has created serious obstacles for Iran's more effective participation. The main question of this paper is how has Iran benefited from the opportunity to develop relations with Kazakhstan? The authors analyze the most important factors regarding Iran's geopolitical position and status with regards to the development of its relations with Kazakhstan.
American Relations with Kazakhstan during 2001-2012: An Analytical Study
Pakistan Journal of International Affairs, 2021
The rise of Central Asian states got special attention from world powers due to their potential energy resources and strategic importance. Among the regional states, Kazakhstan is playing a vital role in worldwide politics because of its geopolitical position and richness in oil and gas assets. It is the leading landlocked state in the world and regionally the most developed nation. When the United States announced "War on Terror" after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, all the Central Asian states strictly condemned those attacks and then became significant for American regional politics, since their borders attached to Afghanistan. Kazakhstan welcomed the US stance and showed cooperation with the U.S. against its War on Terror. Since 1991, U.S. and Kazakhstan collaborated with each other in several fields, especially for the removal of nuclear arms. This research paper analyzes American relations and policies with Kazakhstan in the domain of politics, economics, and security. The study was based on qualitative method. It finds that American relations with Kazakhstan are focused on the promotion of a democratic form of government, policies regarding oil and gas pipelines and weakening the Kazakh dependence on Russia.
Kazakhstan's regional position, its “neighborhood factor,” is more than just a historical and geographical fact (“we didn't choose our neighbors”), but a situation in which both opportunities and limitations are present. Kazakhstan's immediate neighborhood becomes more than important in over-coming its continental landlockedness, turning geographical limitations into opportunities for successful economical development. This has far-reaching economic and social effects for the entire Eurasian region given recent interstate conflicts between neighboring post-Soviet states. The paper reviews the specifics of Kazakhstan's relations with each of its neighbors in terms of both the opportunities and the constraints (economic, political and social) they present. The significance of each of the five neighbors (China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan) to Kazakhstan, as well as their economic and political well-being, are analyzed. Finally, some potential strategies Kazakhstan may pursue to foster mutually beneficial relations with these countries are suggested.

2016
Kazakhstan-Russia relations are going through a period of unprecedented turbulence, and it is not clear when it will end, or what the relationship will look like when it is over. Kazakhstan's government is increasingly smiling through gritted teeth as it seeks to keep relations with its unpredictable neighbor on an even keel during a time of economic crisis and its own impending, unprecedented, leadership change. Although sudden changes in a Kazakhstani policy long defined by pragmatism and patience still seem unlikely, key elements underlying the relationship are transforming in durable ways that will have consequences for decades to come. Significant changes in Russia's foreign policy and in Kazakhstan's politics, demography, and economy are changing the framework for the most important bilateral relationship in Central Asia.
Drifting Apart? An Overview of Russian-Kazakh Foreign Relations
Since the beginning of the 21 st century, Kazakhstan has emerged to an influential middle power with its successful economic development making it a model for the other countries of the region. Being by far the biggest Central Asian country, Kazakhstan was able to become a powerful independent regional player. In the light of this development, Russia did not only lose its ability to dictate its will to Astana, but was also increasingly challenged as a hegemonic power in the region by newly arising competitors such as China, the EU, and others. This intensified rivalry in a number of areas considerably altered the dynamics of Russian-Kazakh relations and presented Moscow with a set of new challenges and a pressing need to recalibrate its foreign policy towards Kazakhstan in order not to lose the battle for influence in Central Asia.
