Airport Business Districts – An Indispensable Reality

CREATIVE SPACE, 2013

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of air transportation as the key catalyst in contemporary urban development. Since the concept of airport-side development is comparatively recent, with little or no guidelines, the study perforce was based on the exemplar sampling, the existing Indian norms, as well as the situation on ground in India. During the course of the study, it was revealed that all three airport area growth drivers, i.e., passengers, service-sector businesses and shippers, are steadily increasing in size and economic importance and have several unmet needs which deserve to be addressed systematically. The conclusions also confirm that the world is in the process of 'learning' and coding suitable norms of such development in order to avoid lop-sided development or uncontrolled urban growth. The key contribution of the study lies in firmly establishing that till such time that an advanced alternative to airport transportation is found, any country's economic growth, shall be positively catalyzed by developing Airport Business Districts.

The Impact of Airport Performance towards Construction and Infrastructure Expansion in Indonesia

Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2018

Development that is generated from airport areas includes construction and infrastructure development. This research reviews about how the implementation of material management in certain construction project and the relationship between development especially construction and infrastructure development with Airport Performance. From those 297 airports then it is chosen airports that have the most completed data about construction project and it is obtained 148 airports. Based on the coefficient correlation (R) test it is known that construction and infrastructure development has relatively strong relation with airport performance variable, but there are still other factors that influence construction and infrastructure development become bigger effect.

The Implementation of Aerotropolis and Eco-Airport Concept Towards Kertajati International Airport Introduction

2018

As more and more aviation-oriented businesses are being drawn to airports and cities along with transportation corridors radiating from them, a new urban form is emerging -- The Aerotropolis -- stretching up to 20 miles (30 kilometers) outwards from some airports. Aerotropolis; a combination of giant airport, a planned city, a shipping facility, and a business hub. This paper is aimed to explain the aerotropolis business model at Kertajati International Airport and to suggest that the aforementioned airport practice the eco-airport concept. In this study, the method used was qualitative, in which the factors around the proximity of Kertajati International Airport influence the nature of the airport operations. Journals and articles were reviewed as references for this research. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that there are four main critical factors for the development of an aerotropolis and that the importance of implementing the eco-airport concept has been id...

Critical Factors for Development of Airport Cities

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2011

Recent trends in airport-centered real estate development are addressed, with emphasis on the concept of the airport city. Airport cities are major economic hubs that have exhibited substantial growth and profits. However, evolution toward an airport city is difficult; several airports worldwide have failed in the attempt. The emergence of this type of development is related to major trends in the aviation sector during the past decades. Globalization and liberalization processes have led to a strong reliance of airport operators on nonaeronautical revenues. Real estate development centered on airports arises as a strategy to maximize nonaeronautical revenues and as a response to a need for revenue diversification. The purpose of this research was to identify the critical, underlying factors in the emergence of an airport city. A framework was designed to illustrate the agents that shape airport city development and the relationships between them. A key informant survey was then con...

Multi-Airport System Development Model: Case Study of Airports in Indonesia

Civil Engineering Journal

Indonesia's air transportation business has grown substantially to suit the community's transportation needs. An increasing number of people travel by airline each year. By way of secondary and tertiary multiplier effects, the intensifying competition between airport services provided in neighboring regions is likely to have a multiplier influence on a territory. Simultaneously, airport services that are more competitive are focused on areas with rising economic growth in sectors like tourism. MAS is an airport system consisting of at least two airports within a metropolitan area that support civil aviation. MAS includes both big and small airports. MAS is the development of an air transportation system to suit the growing demand for air transportation services. As an example of an integrated multi-model airport design in Indonesia, this research will examine Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, as the major airport and Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport as the secondary airport...

Improving the airport operation and environmental quality at small airports in indonesia

International Journal of Sustainable Construction Engineering and Technology, 2011

The study purpose is to strengthen the policy and supervision of airport operation and improve the airport environmental quality to face Green Airport in the near future. The data used are primary and secondary data. The primary data is based on field survey, interview and questionnaires, while secondary data is based on data collected from various agencies. In general, the conclusions are as follows: i) the study results show that the airport operator has given enough attention to the environmental management. With good environmental management, airport operator will find comfort in operating the airport such that airports could improve the operation and environmental quality control system; ii) the concept of green airport can be a reference to the the airport operator such that the airport activities does not negatively impact to the environment; and iii) the implementation of Green Airport concept will improve the quality of environment; and iv) the application of green airport concept will reduce the costs of environmental management. The recommendations are i) improve strategy and airport development in facing the green airport for the future challenges; and ii) airport development plan should noticed since the beginning of airport planned/developed so as to facilitate for the availability airport land expansion, permits, changes in traffic patterns, aircraft technology and implementation of environmental management aspect.

Possibilities of Sustainable Airport Business

2020

Raising awareness of the negative impact of air traffic on climate changes with the greenhouse effect is increasing, so airports are also expected to contribute to reducing its impact on the environment. The airport area has the greatest negative impact not only because of harmful exhaust gases, aircraft noise, but also because of seizure of green areas, fragmentation of natural wildlife habitats, depletion of non-renewable natural resources, energy consumption, generation of waste left behind by tourists, soil and water pollution which are just some of the negative effects that air traffic has on the environment. Negative impacts on the environment extend to the land outside the airport, which can further affect the efficiency of the airport, and thus the sustainable development of the airport. Air travel has made it easier for tourists to get to the other side of the world faster, and the LCC has made transportation accessible to a large number of people. The increased number of tourist arrivals has its positive and negative impact on the population, which is reflected in the quality of life and health of people living near the airport. Reducing the negative impact of air traffic on the environment should be the main goal of airport management. The paper analyzes the sustainable development of the airport with reference to Constantine the Great Airport in Nis, as well as several good examples of airport practice in the world.

Designing the Airport City: An International Perspective

Cities grow and prosper in relation with their transportation hubs. In the past, coastal towns with adequate harbors grew and expanded quickly. In modern times, similar prospects apply to cities with airports which provide competitive advantages for regional and urban development. In addition to being a complex system of facilities, airports are significant stimulators for economic activities in its catchment area. In the last thirty years or so, airports have become clusters of not only transportation-related operational services but also commercial and business activities. Accordingly, airports have grown into complex and multi-faced mega structures, offering space for longer runways and larger terminals, and accommodating a growing number of functions that have nothing related with aviation. Hence, Aerotropolis defined by Prof. Dr. Kasarda is regarded as an urban cluster with similar features to the traditional metropolitan structure. In its core, Airport City is located which functions as the traditional city center of Aerotropolis. This thesis focuses on the principles and relationships for land use planning and design of airports and their environs under the umbrella of Airport City concept. It is aimed to underline current design framework of Airport Cities which is found missing in terms of academic studies. In this context, the Airport City model clarified, and selected cases have been evaluated under certain design principles in order to have an output about design criteria of the Airport City development. The research concludes with inferences regarding existing design guidelines of certain Airport City cases.
