Perceptions on Falling Standard and Decline Inquality of Federal Universities in Northwest Zone , Nigeria

The importance of education to the development of any nation needs not to be overemphasized, and so, falling standard and decline in quality of Education has become the public outcry. Dough, this problem not only in Federal Universities of Northwest Zone Nigerian but across the six Nigerian geopolitical zones is a relative term. The study adopts descriptive survey design using the students and lecturers of Federal Universities of Northwest Zone as the population of the study. Improving the Quality of Tertiary Education In Nigeria, 2021

Education is known to be the best legacy that can be laid out for the next generation. Education is a system of acquiring knowledge about the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a better perspective of looking at life. It is also a requirement for aiding Economic growth and development. If Education is embraced among individuals and organizations, it will develop their capacity and productivity thereby enhancing their individual contribution to Economic-growth and development. Education is the bed rock of excellence. It is a system for aiding Tangibility, Productivity and for combating ignorance. Education is acquired through progressive learning. The learning process of Education is necessarily stratified into different stages. The first stage of Education is known as kindergarten/Nursery/Early child Education. At this stage, the child (usually between the ages of 0-5) learns how to identify objects, sing songs, recognize letters of the alphabets, count numbers and write letters of the alphabets. This stage of Education is preliminary to the next stage. One fact about Education is that it is progressive-Knowledge is gained using the known to explain the unknown.

Standards Responsible for the Decline in Quality of Secondary Education in Nigeria

The paper places secondary education in a strategic position in the Nigerian education system. It clarifies issues surrounding the misplacement of standard as against quality when examining the success or failure of secondary education on yearly basis. This paper points out the fact that the problem of declining quality of education is mainly an administrative one. Administrative concepts of educational inspection and supervision used in the analysis of the major causes of declining quality of education in Nigeria: A Case study of Dekina Local Government Area clearly reveals this fact. Just as it is within the domain of the sector of educational inspection and school supervision to establish and maintain quality education in the country, so is it also that adequate educational inspection and school supervision will produce high quality education, while lack of it will produce declining quality education. In this case study, the assumed lack of adequate school inspection and supervision had its variable factors that directly or indirectly make for declining quality of education. These identified variables in the form of : lack of qualified teachers, students'/pupils' attitude to study, library facilities, parental responsibilities, misplaced government priorities and corruption or lack of integrity among some educational stakeholders were x-rayed in both primary and secondary schools in Dekina Local Government Area. With the analysis of the primary data collected, the learners were able to confirm the existence to a high degree of the aforementioned variable factors that make for declining quality of education. The result of the research enabled the learners to provide the conclusions, recommendations and suggestions advanced for further studies.

The Strengths, Weaknesses and Prospects of University Education in Nigeria. A Critical Review

This paper x-rayed the strengths, weaknesses and prospects of university education in Nigeria. It contends that continuous and holistic improvement in university educational system requires the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. Various societies of the world have evolved various forms of education over time. Formal education has been accepted over time as being capable of enhancing unprecedented growth in societies. Considering the importance of education to the integral development of various nations, huge resources have always been channeled to boost the educational sector by various nations. This paper further discusses the roles of stakeholders in improving quality of university education in Nigeria. Internal and external stakeholders are identified and the various roles they could play in improving the quality of university education are discussed .In Nigeria, for instance, the educational sector is considered as one of the most essential sectors of the yearly budgetary schedule. Looking at the various levels of education, it is true to state that the university education is most suited towards providing the socioeconomic development that Nigeria yearns for. This is because it has been discovered that it is the development of the human person that invariably trickles to the development of other sectors of the socioeconomic system. An efficient university educational system could be considered as one of the best assets a nation can have. And against this backdrop, one could rightly assert that a dysfunctional university system would surely make for a malfunctioned country. This is why this paper has as its thrust to x-ray the university education in Nigeria, bringing to bare its history, strengths, weaknesses and prospects. The paper challenges that even though the nation's university education has achieved quite much, it is equally laden with weaknesses. If the future of university education in Nigeria is to be revamped, then the authors has made some recommendations that could assist in amelioration the university education system in Nigeria.

The mandate of higher institutions is to develop the whole man mentally, morally and physically and to confer degrees on their products who are found worthy in character and learning, to enable them assume leadership roles in their immediate and extended society. SITUATION AND POLICY ANALYSIS OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

This paper focused on situation and policy analysis of education in Nigeria. It started with a short geographical and historical foundation of Nigeria. Principles and general objectives of education in Nigeria were succinctly examined. Other policy issues in the Nigerian education discussed include: The 6-3-3-4 System of Nigerian Education, levels of education in Nigeria and the structure of the Basic and Post Basic Education Curricula. From the preceding analysis, it is crystal clear that Nigeria has very fantastic educational objectives, philosophy, principles, structure and policies. The problem with the Nigerian education is at the implementation stage. The problem of implementation encompasses non-availability of qualified and competent personnel in the system due to the politicization of staff recruitment exercises; non-availability of material resources and poor funding; corruption and lack of patriotism, commitment and administrative will.

This paper aims to examine the falling standard of Nigerian universities by discussing whose responsibility is it for the failure to meet standards. The paper was not designed to criticize any officers’ roles or duties but intends to investigate who should be responsible for maintaining adequate standards within universities. The paper started by elucidating from the extant literature issues relating to quality and how it has been perceived in the Nigeria university context. The paper uses a qualitative approach with interview as the main research instrument. The study uses purposive sampling method to selected 9 universities located in different part of Southwest area in Nigeria, 3 of each from the 3 main owners (federal, state, private). The findings reveal that responsibility for the failing standard of university education in Nigeria is no-one’s responsibility but everyone’s business.
