DEVELOPMENT OF ARGUMENTATIVE DISCOURSES OF INDONESIAN WRITERS FOUND IN THE OPINION FORUM OF THE JAKARTA POST By

In this era, English is established as the world language of research and publication. This makes the English language significant for students and professionals. Tangkiengsirisin (2010, 1) states that text flow through a sequence of sentences is a main criterion for advanced writing. This research is aimed at finding out the flows of ideas of the English Arguments of Indonesian writers. This research applies topical, paradigmatic analysis. It involves identifying topics and sequences of topics/ ideas. After the topical analysis is done, the investigator contemplates the ideas development pattern of the entire essay. After analyzing fourteen English Arguments of Indonesian writers, it is found out that English Arguments of Indonesian writers are mostly developed linearly. COGNITIVE PROCESS IN ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING: A CASE STUDY OF THREE INDONESIAN COLUMNISTS

This research is aimed at reconstructing cognitive processes experienced by Indonesian advanced writers in five stages of writing: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Three Indonesian advanced writers were involved to be sources to reveal the " noumena " or " under-meaning structures " that make their works come into existence. This research reveals that various ways experienced by every single writer in exploring inspiration, starting to write, developing ideas and arguments, revising draft and determining them as final drafts. Learning from advanced writers is fruitful efforts to evolve our writing competence. Experiences, cognitions, interests, values, stylistics, metaphors, and mechanics are influential aspects in enriching their works.

Textual Function in the Jakarta Post Editorials

This research deals with Theme and Rheme in Editorials texts of The Jakarta Post newspaper. The aims are to find out the optional element dominates the structure of theme in the editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper and to describe where the optional dominant element occurs. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from three different editions of The Jakarta Post editorials which is publish on January 2014. The findings indicate that conjunction was an element dominantly used in textual theme because there were so many compound clauses and there were two or more clauses in coordination relation or dependency on another. Investigating the Indonesian Efl Students’ Argument in Argumentative Essay

This study investigates the written test results of the Indonesian undergraduate students’ argumentative essay. For that reason, three research questions are made. 1). what is the level of achievement of the students in the argumentative essay quantitatively? 2). what aspects of an essay appear in respect to the argumentative essay generic structure as formulated? 3). how well did they use the rhetoric reputation and argument in their essay?. 27 handwriting' answer sheets of undergraduate English Department students enrolled at semester four of a state university in Indonesia were taken purposively. The data analysis uses a quantitative and qualitative approach. The results show that the students quantitatively achieved average score 76,74 which means good. An Analysis of Argument Structure of Research Article of English Postgraduate Program of Bengkulu University Published In Journal

This study investigates the argument pattern in research articles by postgraduate students of English and Education University Bengkulu, based on Toulmin’s Theory (1958). This study analyzed the argument pattern, and reveal the type of data used by the student to support the claim in their argument contains in introduction section and discussion section of Journal Applied Lingusitic and Literature (JOALL) 2016. The data analysis result show that (a) the common argument pattern employed for arguments in introduction section of Research Article published in JOALL is Semi-complete pattern; (b) in discussion section the authors also commonly employ Semi-complete pattern. In addition (c) there are five types of data used by the authors to ground their arguments they are, Facts, Statistics, Example, Expert Opinion, and A Note on Visual. It can be conclude that the Research Article author published in JOALL have a good argumentative text based on Toulmin’s theory.

THE PROCESS IN EDITORIAL OF THE JAKARTA POST

Naisyah, Atiqah. Registration Number: 082222810003. The Process in Editorial of The Jakarta Post. A Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Medan. 2012. This research was conducted to discover the types of the Process, the most dominant types of Process, and the implication of the dominant process in editorial of The Jakarta Post on the political topics. It was a descriptive qualitative design. The analysis was based on ten editions of The Jakarta Post during January 2012 till March 2012 and there were 402 processes in 402 clauses. The findings show that only five types of Process occurred, namely Material Process (62.18%) from 250 clauses, Relational Process (26.86%) from 108 clauses, Verbal Process (5.72%) from 23 clauses, Mental Process (3.23%) from 13 clauses, and Existential Process (1.99%) from 8 clauses. Material Process was the dominant one because it indicated activities or events that happen in the outside world of human being. Furthermore, for the editorial of The Jakarta Post presented a report of an action, so the physical or action verbs are mostly used as the representation of the physical experience of human being.

Appraisals Analysis on the Argumentation Structure of Indonesian Undergraduate Students’ Research Articles

This research aims to analyze the argumentation structure of undergraduate students' research articles that focus on the introduction section. The data collection was conducted by analyzing the proceedings in the "Background" section written by undergraduate students at university in Indonesia. The data were then analyzed by using a corpus. This research found types of the argument of this study were proclaim, disclaim, entertain, and attribute. The lexical choice that was used proclaim with a total of 46. Entertain lexemes a total of 37. The next lexical choice was used disclaim with a total of 33. Finally, attribute a total of 26 as the lowest engagement in appraisal. Through the findings and discussion, this study implies that the more complex argumentation structure, the more academic vocabularies that the students could use to enhance the quality of their writing. In order to enable undergraduate students to be critical, disclaim lexemes through rebuttal section could be endorsed more in the writing activities. Since this study was limited to only one proceeding as the data, we suggest that more data sources can be conducted to broaden the discussion about this topic.

The Students’ Writing Ability of Argumentative Essay at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang

Writing as a productive language skill take a part important role in the curriculum of English. In academic field, ideas are mostly conveyed through writing instead of speaking, because they are more visible and last longer in written form. Argumentative essay is one of the genres studied by students of English education department at Universitas Negeri Padang. The students are commanded in creating and writing an argumentative essay. This research aimed to analyze the ability of students' writing. argumentative essay. The subject in this study was the third-year students of English in Universitas Negeri Padang. Twenty five students were selected as samples. This study was used descriptive research. The research data came from the document of students' writing final test to get the ability of students in writing an argumentative essay. There were twenty five documents that had been analyzed based on Brown's indicators. It consists of content, organization, grammar, vocabulary and mechanics. The finding of this study showed that the ability of English education department students were good (68,7). It indicated that the students should increase their ability in writing argumentative essay properly.

Logical Flaws In Indonesian Students’ Argumentative Essays

Writing argumentative essays becomes a challenge for both teachers and students as it relates to various aspects. One of them is on the teaching and learning of critical thinking skills comprising the awareness to avoid logical flaws. The real reflection of critical thinking can be traced through students' ability to express their thought in the form of arguments which have no logical flaws. Good arguments must be supported by convincing claims and careful choice of wordings which is free from fallacious statements. This paper identifies the fallacious statements or logical flaws occurring in the argumentative writing of the students of an Islamic University in Indonesia. The findings show the faulty reasoning found in terms of the discussion on the topics, the flawed relations with the audience, and the relations with the characters involved in the arguments. The types of the logical flaws also concern the claims expressed. On claims of fact, the fallacies found include hasty generalization, irrelevancy, slippery slope, oversimplification and begging the question. Regarding pathos, the fallacy type covers ad populum, appeal to emotion premises and red herring. Meanwhile, the ethos fallacy occurs in straw man only. On claims of value, more faulty reasoning is found compared to the discussion on the topics which are considered less familiar. In the logos fallacy for instance, the whole types of fallacy are found. The pathos found involves appeal to emotion premises and red herring, while the ethos fallacy occurs in appeal to authority and ad hominem. On claims of policy, the similar tendency of ethos is also found while the pathos existing is in the form of appeal to emotion premises. Therefore, it is recommended that the students develop their critical thinking skills which involve constructing logical and flawless reasoning.
