Ontology-based learning applications: a development methodology

Proceedings of the 24th …, 2006

Current learning standards (e.g. IEEE LOM, IMS, SCORM, CanCore) trying to adopt Semantic Web technologies to conquer web-based learning contexts. In this paper we propose a methodology for developing learning ontologies, and discuss the role of the Semantic Web in educational or learning systems. We also provide a brief overview of learning ontology, its need, development tools and process. In addition we provide representative examples of ontology-based applications or projects in education.

Ontological Web Portal for Educational Ontologies

In spite of the fact that the field of applying ontological research in education is fairly young it is already quite broad and fuzzy. The set of technologies used and developed there have roots in a variety of diverse areas of information and pedagogical sciences. To facilitate the process of scientific and scholastic search the domain needs to be structured. This paper presents two main results: an ontological overview of the Ontologies for Education field and an initial report on the development of an ontology-driven web portal providing a single network place, where researchers, students, and practitioners can find information about available research projects and successful practices in this field.

A Framework for Building Ontology in Education Domain for Knowledge Representation

In this paper we have proposed a method of creating domain ontology using protégé tool. Existing ontology does not take the semantic into context while displaying the information about different modules. This paper proposed a methodology for the derivation and implementation of ontology in education domain using protégé 4.3.0 tool.

Conceptual model of Ontology in Education Era

2014

The Ontology Problem is a fundamental challenge of the emerging Semantic Web. This problem is comprised of three key sub-problems that are higher level Ontology Problem, the domain ontology problem and the Ontology Integration Problem. Key issues are OWL (web based ontology) reasoning is limited and has performance issues, Multi-threaded access is unstable and some API’s are confusing. This paper derives current status of ontology in education domain also focusing on how to develop a conceptual and strategic model which helps us to develop an ontology in terms of Natural language parsing (NLP) , XML (extended markup language), OWL and RDF (resource descriptor framework).

An educational ontology based on metadata standards

… European Conference on …, 2003

In this paper, we present EUME Onto, an educational ontology that describe terms of learning design, contents and resources. This ontology is intended to (1) organize the available information; and (2) provide the grounds of the knowledge based for an Intelligent Learning Management System. EUME Onto is based on metadata standards such as IMS-EML, LOM 1484, OASIS DocBook and FIPA Ontology Devices. To reduce implementation efforts, the WebODE platform, a scalable and integrated workbench for ontological engineering, has been used.

E-Learning Developing Using Ontological Engineering

2013

One of the most important prerequisites in base plan for long-term development of all countries is high education level in society what includes e-learning studies. The time is coming when global tasks could be solved only with communication and learning in world level. Ontological engineering have become an efficient methodology for knowledge representation and management in many domains and tasks. Ontology design, approaches and methodologies are very important issues for building ontologies for specific task. This paper presents the application of the ontological engineering methodology in e-Learning domain. There is the development of two web-based ontologies in the area of artificial intelligence technology. The first one is the “Artificial Intelligence in Education” ontology and the second is ‘Expert Systems” ontology. The developed ontologies were encoded in OWL-DL format using the Protégé-OWL editing environment. The ontological engineering methodology is widely used in many...

A Case Study of Ontology-Driven Development of Intelligent Educational Systems

International Journal of Web-Based Learning and Teaching Technologies, 2000

This article presents a case study of ontology-driven development of intelligent educational systems. Following a review of literature related to ontology development, ontology-driven software development, and traditional software engineering, we developed an ontology-driven software development methodology appropriate for intelligent ontology-driven systems which have ontologies as key execution components, such as e-Advisor, and which is biased toward an integration of incremental and iterative ontology development and downstream Model Driven Architecture for development of software components.

Ontology-based Approach to Build Intelligent E-Learning Systems

2010

Today e-learning systems become more and more social and have tendency to include web 2.0 software. A number of online tools and resources give a new adaptive and integrated environment for educational purposes. The Long Tail Learning phenomenon promotes a better motivation and involves students in learning. But all these benefits miss a component of the concept knowledge about a studied domain which is usually provided by a teacher. Meanwhile, ontological engineering is a very effective methodology to create, keep up-to-date, review and structure teaching courses and materials. The combination of the ontology-based approach and the new web 2.0 technologies suggests that students engage in an active learning process where such skills as collaboration, creative and analytical thinking, communication and socialization are developed more effectively. The first results of applying the described technology prove a wide perspective of the use of this technology as a part of e-learning systems.

Building an Ontology in Educational Domain Case Study for the University of Palestine

The current web is based on HTML which cannot be demoralized by information retrieval techniques and therefore processing of information on the web is generally restricted to manual keyword searches which results in unrelated information retrieval, so the semantic web was founded to resolve this problem; furthermore, ontology is used to capture knowledge about any domain of interest with the goal of integrating the machine understandable data on the current human-readable web. Web Ontology Language (OWL) is a semantic markup language for sharing ontologies on the web. In this paper, the education domain and the development of a University Ontology using Protégé 4.1 Editor is considered. The University of Palestine was chosen as an example for the Ontology Development and the diverse aspects: super class and sub class hierarchy, creating a sub class, instances for classes illustration, query retrieval process using the Unified Process for Building the Ontology (UPON) technique.
