Student perceptions and solutions about the matters of environment
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2011
The goal of this study is to determine the manner in which the 8th graders perceive the environmental problems and to bring solutions to these problems from their own perspectives. Qulitative research technique such as document review technique was used as data collection tool. 111 students (63 females and 48 males) wrote compositions about environmental problems and proposed solutions. Majority of the students thought of visual pollution and air pollution when environmental matters were mentioned and they proposed solutions regarding these problems. In addition to these, the students mentioned global warming, destruction of forests, erosion and unplanned urbanization when they were reflecting their ideas on water, soil, noise and nuclear pollution. The students had interesting analysis and brought various solutions to the problems by suggesting awareness raising campaigns, providing educational seminars by the government, broadcasting TV programmes related to the matter and increasing criminal sanctions towards environmental crimes.

Investigation of the Environmental Attitudes and Approaches of University Students’
The purpose of this study is to determine university students' approach to environment and nature, and their awareness of environmental protection. For this purpose, a survey with sample of 12% applied to the students of the Faculty of Architecture, Gazi University. Approaches and attitudes of students evaluated according to variables of age, gender and their attended programs and grades within the scope of protection of the environment, human-environment-nature relationship, the use of natural resources, environmental issues, economic growth and industrialization issues. Descriptive statistics and quantitative methods were used in the process of analysis and evaluation of the data collected. In the conclusion of study, It has been determined that students participated to this study are indecisive about environmentalist and nature-centered approaches. Students were also found to be indecisive about sensitivity related to environment, nature and environmental issues, in taking individual responsibility and changing their attitudes and behaviors. When approaches and sensitivities of students analyzed according to their gender; sensitivities of girl students were higher, and according to their department; sensitivities of students at the department of urban and regional planning were found to be higher. There is no significant relationship found between the environmental awareness of students and courses taken by these students about ecology and the environment.

A Survey of Environmental Awareness, Attitude, and Participation amongst University Students: A Case Study, 2014
Environmental awareness implies not only being knowledgeable about the environment, but also being acquainted with sets of values, attitudes and skills for addressing environment related problems. Students, especially of higher institutions/universities are the hope for future betterment of environment, and for attaining environmental sustainability. The study surveyed environmental awareness level, attitudes, and participation among Lovely Professional University students, (LPU, Phagwara). It attempted to find out students level of knowledge and awareness on environment, their attitudes towards the environment as well as their participation level in environmental protection and improvements. The study was primary data base and hence questionnaire method of data collection was employed. A total number of 250 questionnaires were administered, students` responses were scored, and the data was analyzed using SPSS statistical software employing descriptive statistics. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling in which students were sampled at random around the university so as to ensure an unbiased representation of the total population under study. Results from the study revealed high level of environmental knowledge and positive attitudes towards the environment among the students, but low level participation in environmental protection activities. This implies that, other factors than environmental knowledge and awareness may be the stimulants to induce students` active participation in environmental protection and improvement activities.

Problem statement: Our earth suffers from many environmental problems which need to be tackled at the individual level, requiring individuals to develop those attitudes which will guide them to environmentally supportive behavior. The objectives of this study were to investigate (i) the attitudes of Sultan Qaboos University students to some environmental problems, (ii) their willingness to take action to ameliorate these problems, (iii) the effect of students' gender and college of study on their attitudes and (iiii) to examine the relationship between students' attitudes and their willingness to take action to reduce these problems. Approach: Data were collected from 317 students from five different faculties. The data were collected by using a questionnaire containing 48 items distributed over 5 dimensions: Energy, water, air pollution, waste and desertification. Validity and reliability were examined. Results: The results showed generally that the students hold positive attitudes towards the issues raised and that female students showed more positive attitudes than males. The results indicated that students' attitudes towards environmental problems did not appear to be influenced by the university faculties in which they are studying, except in the case of energy, where significant differences were observed between the attitudes of students from the faculty of Education and the faculty of Agriculture, the former showing more positive attitudes than the latter. The results showed that students were willing to take action to reduce environmental problems; this was not affected by gender or faculty. Conclusion: The findings suggested the necessity to develop students' attitudes and willingness to take responsibility to reduce these problems.
