Reef Fish Diversity in Jayapura City, Indonesia: A Preliminary Study

As one of the marine areas included in the world's Coral Triangle region, Yos Sudarso Bay have a potential reef fish diversity that needs to be studied. However, there is very little information about reef fish diversity in these waters to date. This study aims to determine the species diversity of reef fish in Yos Sudarso Bay, Jayapura City, Indonesia. The study was conducted in April 2020 at seven sites; six of them located inside the Yos Sudarso Bay and one more located outside the bay. Sampling was carried out using the Underwater Visual Census method (25 m long and 5 m wide). Relative abundance by species, and diversity (H´), evenness (E), and dominance (C) indices were calculated. A total of 1,075 individual reef fish was recorded in seven study sites, representing 122 species and 26 families. Locations showed differences in reef fish abundance (86 to 215 individuals/125 m 2), diversity (H´= 2.462 to 3.358), evenness (E = 0.770 to 0.887), and dominance (C = 0.047 to 0.155). This study has provided preliminary information on species diversity, fish abundance, and the ecological index of reef fish in Yos Sudarso Bay, Jayapura City.

The composition and diversity of coral reef fishes play an essential role in the ecosystem (Mumby et al. 2004). Runtuboi et al. (2018) explained that the condition of coral reefs determines reef fish composition and diversity. In the coral reef ecosystem, reef fishes are the most abundant organisms (Nybakken 1982). The high diversity of reef fishes impacts various and complex habitats in the coral reef ecosystem. Therefore, the reef fish diversity is an important indicator of the health level of coral reef ecosystems (Adrim et al. 2012; Hourigan et al. 1988). Bell and Galzin (1984) also explained that changes in the diversity of reef fish communities could indicate changes in the ecosystem. Coral reef ecosystems positively correlate with reef fish diversity (Bengen 2013; Marshel and Mumby 2015). Besides playing an essential role as an environmental health indicator, the existence of reef fish is also a source of livelihood for the community living on the coast and small islands. Reef fish diversity will help accumulate more ecological service capital (eco-service capital) and is also used to evaluate the various impacts of human activities on ecosystem function (Eduardo et al. 2018; Palumbi et al. 2009; Paulangan et al. 2019). Reef fish is one of the aquatic organisms that correlates significantly in the coral reef ecosystem. There is an excellent coral reef ecosystem that can increase reef fish production. The primary function of the coral reef ecosystem for the reef life is as a spawning ground, nursery ground, and feeding ground. Smith (1978) and Rondonuwu et al. (2019) revealed that one describing the complexity of coral reef habitat structure is the abundance of individual coral reef fish. Diversity, evenness and dominance index reef fish in Krueng Raya Water, Aceh Besar
Coral reef ecosystem is considered as a very complex ecosystem and a habitat for marine biota, included reef fish community. The purpose of this study is to obtain the value of diversity, evenness and dominance index of reef fish in Krueng Raya Waters (KRW). This research was conducted annually during 2014, 2015, 2016 using the UVS (underwater Visual Census) method. The diversity index of reef l fish in the KRW is categorized as stable (1 <H '<3), yet it was decreased from 2.6 in 2014 to 2.1 in 2016. the value of uniformity index is ranged 0.8 to 0.62 (2014 to 2016) as it categorized as low. Furthermore, the dominance index is also indicated in the low category.

The ecosystem of coral reefs is a fundamental process for marine resources playing an important role in supporting the lives of various aquatic organisms, with coral reef fish being one of the main dependent sea animals. The current study was purposely undertaken to assess coral reef fish biodiversity and its association with coral coverage on Halang Melingkau Island, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research was conducted in April 2019 on Halang Melingkau Island, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research was carried out at 6 stations with 18 observation points that were considered to be representative of the conditions of coral reefs and coral reef fish in the waters of the island. The field observation method was applied by laying down 50-meter line transects (line intercept transects) and using visual census (underwater visual census) to obtain data concerning fish and coral populations. The findings indicated that the average coral reef coverage in Halang Melingkau Island was moderate (33.77%) , and it was remarkable that station 6 had the best coral reef coverage (53.71%). Additionally, station 6 possessed the highest fish population as well as the highest number of fish species. Findings of the present study predict that correlation analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between coral coverage and the abundance of coral reef fish. In this essence, when the coral coverage increases, the coral reef fish abundance would also increase. Simultaneously, a decrease in the coral reef coverage in a specific location could result in the decrease in the abundance of coral reef fish

Reef fish is one benchmark to determine a coral reef ecosystem's biodiversity. Reef fish communities are important in coral reef ecosystems because of their trophic relationships with other biotic components. The aim of this study was to determine the biodiversity of reef fish on Halang Melingkau Island, Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research was conducted in March-August 2019. Coral reef fish data were collected using an underwater visual census method. Transects were applied as close as possible to the substrate using a 50 m roll-up measuring tape. Coral reef ecosystem is known as an important place to live various types of fish, where coral conditions will affect the diversity and abundance of the fish. In healthy coral reef ecosystems generally can be found many types of fish with high density. This research aims to investigate the diversity and abundance of coral fishes at Saebus Island, East Java. The observation conducted at 4 stations, according to cardinal point by UVS (underwater visual census) methods with belt transect with the visibility of 2,5 m horizontally, and 5 m vertically. The length of transect was 100 m parallel with coastline, with the area of observation is 500 m2. The censuses were conducted at 2 different depths (3 and 10 m). The Indonesian Archipelago has a very complex geological history, along with equatorial warm sea temperature, resulting in diverse types of coral reefs and high diversity of coral reef fish. Many livelihoods of the coastal community are dependent on coral reef fisheries. The present study aimed to determine which region and location in the Indonesian Archipelago has the most diverse and abundant coral reef fish. The archipelago was divided into four regions: the Indian Ocean, Sunda Shelf, Wallacea, and the Pacific Ocean. Data were obtained from a national coral reef monitoring program of the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography (RCO)-the National Board for Research and Innovation (BRIN). The reef fish data were collected using the underwater visual census method, from 321 belt transects on 24 locations (districts) across the archipelago. The results show that coral reef fish diversity of the Pacific region was the highest across the archipelago for all three trophic levels, i.e., corallivore, herbivore, and carnivore fish. Reef fish community structure in the islands of Paraja Bay, Pandeglang District, Banten, Indonesia

Paraja Bay waters have five small islands that coexist with Ujung Kulon National Marine Park and act as a buffer zone for the diversity of fishery resources. This study aimed to assess the reef fishes community structure at small islands in Paraja Bay. Observations were made in 20 locations during August and September 2019 in the five small islands. Reef fishes community structure showed 106 species as included major group (54 species), indicator group (24 species) and target group (28 species), among five small islands, i.e. Badul, M angir, Oar, Sumur and Umang Islands. The highest reef fishes abundance was founded in Umang Island waters. Several target fish species recorded during the study were mature fish (such as those targeted by fishermen). Only a small proportion were juveniles. Reef fish community structure was categorized as stress community to stable community with its indication was low diversity value, high evenness index, and low dominance. The low diversity index value illustrates that the level of uniformity of reef fish species in Paraja Bay waters is high. This condition is evidenced by each coral fish group's evenness index included in the main species group around 0.93 to 0.98. The target species is 0.88 to 0.99.

This study aimed to fill the gap of knowledge on this group of fishes by estimating the natural stock, species composition and biodiversity of target reef fishes from three regencies; Alor, East Flores (Flores Timur) and Southwest Maluku (Maluku Barat Daya/MBD) using underwater visual census method. A total of 176 species belong to 19 families of economically important target fish were recorded from 62 survey sites. The highest estimated stock is located in Southwest Maluku Regency-based on both abundance and biomass values, followed by Alor Regency and the lowest in East Flores Regency. Target fish species from the family of Caesionidae has the highest composition both based on abundance (74%) and biomass (40%). The highest species composition of target fish is from Pterocaesio tile (57.65%) which is more than 50% of the overall target fish. Community structure of target fish in the three regencies is still in a relatively good condition based on diversity index (H'), evenness (E) and no domination (C) of a single species occurs inside the target fish community, with exception in Alor Regency where the community of target fish is indicated to be under pressure. Biodiversity index by Bray-Curtis analysis in each location shows that most of the sites have the similarity of 67.51%, suggesting that there is not much difference in terms of target fish community structure between the three regencies.
Temporal of reef fish communities in the coastal water of Krueng Raya, Aceh Besar Regency, Indonesia

Krueng Raya waters have a big potency on coral reef fish; However, there was no study was conducted to document this biodiversity. This data are crucial for the conservation plan. Therefore, the objective of the study was to examine the community structure of reef fish in the Krueng Raya coastal waters, Mesjid Raya Subdistrict, Aceh Besar, Indonesia. The sampling was conducted from January 2014 to December 2016. The data were collected at three stations by the Visual Census method with a depth of 3-4 meters. The research found the average amount of reef fish was 1743 individuals that were consisted of 93 species and comprised of 26 families. The Families dominating were Pomacentridae, Acanthuridae, Chaetodontidae, and Labridae. The distribution level of reef fish individually was influenced by the environmental conditions of the coral reef ecosystem.
