Ultrasonics: An Essential Endodontic Tool -A Review

In modern endodontics ultrasonics plays an important role for the success of endodontic therapy. Ultrasound is sound energy having frequency in the range of more than 20000 Hz. Ultrasonics has recently been used in endodontics for various steps like, modifying root canal access like removal of pulp stones and canal calcifications, activation of irrigating solutions in root canals, ultrasonic removal of posts during retreatment, removal of broken instruments and obstructions from canals, application of sealers to canal walls; condensation of gutta-percha during canal obturation, root end preparation during periapical surgery.

The continuous development of science and technology offered medicine a new perspective in diagnose, treatment and health care facilities. This paper presents a special application of ultrasonics in endodontics, an important specialization in dentistry. One of the most important practice in endodontics is finding the additional canals of the molars, that in the most of the cases general practitioners miss. There are presented two case reports of two patients diagnosed with apical periodontitis and investigated with ultrasonics. A piezo generator unit that uses ultrasonics tips to perform dental treatments, from Morita company (J Morita USA) was used. Ultrasonics in endodontics: a review of the literature

During the past few decades endodontic treatment has benefited from the development of new techniques and equipment, which have improved outcome and predictability. Important attributes such as the operating microscope and ultrasonics (US) have found indispensable applications in a number of dental procedures in periodontology, to a much lesser extent in restorative dentistry, while being very prominently used in endodontics. US in endodontics has enhanced the quality of treatment and represents an important adjunct in the treatment of difficult cases. Since its introduction, US has become increasingly more useful in applications such as gaining access to canal openings, cleaning and shaping, obturation of root canals, removal of intracanal materials and obstructions, and endodontic surgery. This comprehensive review of the literature aims at presenting the numerous uses of US in clinical endodontics and emphasizes the broad applications in a modern-day endodontic practice.

Importance of ultrasound use in endodontic access of teeth with pulp calcification

One of the challenges of Endodontics is the location of root canals, so that they can be cleaned, reshaped and filled properly. The use of ultrasound and visualization of the operative field under magnification has increased safety in certain endodontic treatments, ensuring optimal results. The objective of this study was to show a clinical approach of treating a tooth with calcification at the opening of canals where access to the pulp chamber was performed, followed by removal of calcification and location of canals under magnification using ultrasonic inserts. The case was finished with definitive crown-root sealing in a single session. It can be concluded that the associated use of ultrasound under magnification is a feasible clinical strategy to access areas of calcification.

The Use of Ultrasonic Instrumentats in the Dental Practice

The ultrasonic instrumentation in dentistry has been used since the middle of the last century. Improved visualization, ease of operation and precise cutting ability have allowed ultrasonic instruments to be widely used in dentistry. The study considers the possibilities of using ultrasound instruments in various fields of dentistry. Advantages of ultrasonic instruments include conservative preparation of the cavity, less painful caries removal procedure and minimal noise generation. All these improvements are presented in clinical cases. Sonic, ultrasonic and manual instruments in the control of periodontal disease: an in vitro evaluation

The purpose of this study was evaluating the damage caused by root planning through different types of instrumentation. To perform it, 30 artificial teeth were selected from Prodens trademark, and their roots were divided in longitudinal sense and later included partly in blocks type IV plaster. Next they were submitted to three different types of root instrumentation: manual, sonic and ultrasonic. In each group 15 strokes apex coronary was carried out. After the analysis of root structures, they were evaluated through a stereoscope with 8x magnification; the images were scanned and the damage caused to the dentin surface was measured in total area with software “Image J”. The measures noted were statistical analyzed trough the tests ANOVA/Tukey, comparing the different types of instrumentation. Application of Ultrasonic Devices in Management of Periodontal Lesions - Bone Response in a Case of a Tooth with Poor Treatment Prognosis

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of odontogenic jaw cysts may include one of the following four basic methods: enucleation, marsupialization, staged combination of marsupialization and enucleation, or enucleation with curettage. Enucleation/cystectomy, alone or combined with other procedures, is the preferred choice of treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the case report was to present the outcome of an ultrasound-assistant periapical cystectomy in a frontal upper tooth with indications for extraction. RESULTS: Postoperative recovery was uneventful. The functional result was satisfactory. On the follow-up X-rays a reduction of the intraosseous defect by a new bone formation could be observed. CONCLUSION: We found ultrasonic surgery to be a promising approach for safe and effective odontogenic jaw cyst removal reducing the risk of its recurrence.
