Control Metrics Evaluation Model for Business Processes using Process Mining

2018

Process mining is considered a discipline that contains a set of techniques, algorithms and methods for discovering, monitoring and optimizing business processes through event logs extracted from transactional systems. Based on this discipline, a model is proposed that allows the evaluation of the performance and behaviour of business processes through a set of control metrics. As a result of the model evaluation, six control metrics were analyzed in the logistic process of a Peruvian retail enterprise using ProM Tools for the application of Process Mining techniques and Qlikview for the implementation of the Process Cube and results presentation. Several organizations look for improving their business processes in order to enhance their efficiency and competitiveness. Business process management approach includes techniques allowing continuous business process improvement. Process mining is a business process management technique allowing to extract knowledge from event logs commonly available in today’s information systems. Business process model extension is a process mining technique enriching a business process model with different perspectives useful for decision making support. Furthermore, financial costs incurred during business process execution is prominent information needed for business process improvement decision making in terms of cost reduction. We propose a solution for business process model extension with cost perspective based on process mining. The solution is based on cost extension of the high-level process structure, which is a meta-model enabling the integration of different perspectives into one mod...

Business Process Modelling vs. Process Mining: A Comparative Study of Methods and Software Tools

19. hrvatska konferencija o kvaliteti i 10. znanstveni skup Hrvatskog društva za kvalitetu: Book of Proceedings, 2019

In the last three decades, the importance of business process improvement and related techniques in organizational design has been widely stressed. Business process management and process analysis, with their significant impact on process and organizational excellence, continue to remain intriguing topics. Recently, a shift away from traditional business process management methods, such as value-chain approach modelling and process simulation, has occurred, alongside the prominence of process mining that has emerged due to data mining and big data opportunities. Hence, this article investigates characteristics of a more traditional technique of process modelling in well-known methodologies, characteristic of a process-mining technique, and offers a comparison of the two approaches. Additionally, a presentation of one business process modelling tool and one process-mining tool is delivered. In the end, the suitability of techniques presented is discussed, also in relation to the organizational quality and excellence.

The Importance of Process Mining in Enhancing Process Performance in Organisation

2015

academic conference concerned with research, education and application in The development of business intelligence allows organisations to manage and enhance the decision-making process by providing methods and tools for analysing data. Process mining in organisation is needed to develop connection between data mining as business intelligence method and Business Process Management. The main purpose of process mining is to discover process model based on existing event log data that can be used for different objectives. This research will examine the essential concepts of process mining and its tools in order to analyse data and deliver proposal to enhance process performance in organisation. This research conducts focus group discussion as a qualitative method to discuss the advantages of process mining and to compare the process mining tools. The analysis highlights that the process mining has important role in organisation in determining: basic performance metrics; process model; and organisational model, and analysing social network and performance characteristics. Interestingly, both of process mining tools ProM and DISCO have different features and capabilities to discover the business process in organisation. This allows organisation to assess the data of business process transaction and provide some improvement approaches based on the result in process mining. By using the process-mining algorithm and tools, organisation can manage how to improve their process of business more effectively and efficiently in order to achieve their objectives.

A METHODOLOGY TO IDENTIFY, MODEL, AND IMPROVE BUSINESS PROCESSES

European, Mediterranean & Middle Eastern Conference on Information Systems 2014 (EMCIS2014) October 27th – 28th 2014, Doha, Qatar, 2014

Identifying, modelling, and improving business processes have become a vital activity for enterprises to become successful and competitive. To achieve this goal, enterprises need to select or come up with an efficient methodology to improve their business processes. The aim of this paper is to build a novel methodology to improve business processes. We called this methodology IMI. It consists of three main phases that each includes several steps. The first phase deals with the identification of business processes. The second step deals with modelling. In the third step business process improvement is explained. This methodology has been developed during the enterprise architecture project of AbFa-Kerman Company and the examples in this paper are adopted from this project. Finally, IMI methodology is evaluated. The evaluation results show strengths in determining the input and output of each step and partially covering the information model by graphically presenting the results of each phase. Employing hierarchical diagrams, such as BPML, SIPOC, WCA, and APQC, IMI benefits from simplicity and comprehensibility.

Business Process Model Improvement Based on Measurement Activities

Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Evaluation of Novel Approaches to Software Engineering, 2011

The current importance of Business Process improvement lies in the fact that it is a key aspect for organizational improvement. Since business process improvement can be dealt from different perspectives, we propose the use of measurement as a technique by which to collect information concerning the quality of the process. We have specifically applied measures to the design stage of the business process lifecycle, which signifies measuring conceptual models. Measurement in Design and Analysis lifecycle stage has several advantages, principally in that it is a means to avoid the propagation of errors to later stages, in which their detection and correction may be more difficult. We therefore propose certain steps for business process model improvement, based on measurement activities (measurement, evaluation, and redesign). These activities have been applied to a real hospital business process model. The model was modified by following expert opinions and modelling guidelines, thus leading to the attainment of a higher-quality model. Our findings clearly support the practical utility of measurement activities for business process model improvement.

Process analysis techniques and tools for business improvements

Business Process Management Journal, 1998

Business process reengineering (BPR) and total quality management (TQM) both emphasise the benefits that a process orientated view of company operations can bring. Acquiring a clear definition of the “as‐is” business process and developing an understanding about how the process may be re‐engineered is a crucial stage in any BPR project. This early phase normally has three objectives: to achieve a full understanding of the process to be re‐engineered so as to clarify its objectives and characteristics; to create a shared vision and understanding among the re‐engineering team; to have a basis for starting the redesign. To support this phase, there is a range of tools: manual, computer supported and computer enabled which are traditionally used to help in the activities of process definition and analysis. This paper describes some of the newer approaches. The product introduction process (PIP) is examined in a general sense, and specific examples from the automotive industry are taken ...
