Knowledge management and performance in UAE business organizations

Knowledge management is gaining prominence in academia and the world of business practice. The need for organizations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to empower themselves through knowledge management cannot be ignored. Yet, not much empirical evidence on the subject can be found in the literature. This study investigates the relationship between knowledge management and organizational performance in the UAE. The knowledge management dimensions considered in this paper are organizational culture, organizational infrastructure, technical infrastructure, management support, reward and vision clarity. Organizational performance is measured in terms of efficiency, customer satisfaction, decision-making, quality of work and financial benefits. A questionnaire was used to collect data from general managers, functional managers, IT managers and chief knowledge officers from a variety of business sectors. Results of one sample t-test show that the dimensions used in this study enhance performance improvement. Results also show that except for reward and vision clarity, all investigated knowledge management dimensions are significantly correlated with performance improvement.

Knowledge Management Process as a Predictor on Organizational Performance in Dubai Government Departments

Investigating the Relationship Between Knowledge Sharing Strategies and Organizational Excellence Pillars

Although it is generally accepted that only organizations with a commitment to knowledge sharing and organizational excellence will remain competitive, there are an alarmingly low number of public organizations that have been identified as having the basics of excellence in the fourth cycle (2008/2009) of King Abdullah II Award for Excellence in Government Performance and Transparency in Jordan. It is then the aim to perform a study that seeks to investigate the relationship between codification and personalization knowledge sharing strategies on three main pillars of organizational excellence which were adapted by the award. These pillars include: customer focus, results orientation and transparency. Survey method employing a questionnaire as a technique for collecting data was used. The survey involves four selected government organizations who won the award in the fourth cycle (2008/2009) and are familiar with the topic of this study. 500 questionnaires were distributed using the simple random sampling technique yielding to 191 usable responses. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 15. To ensure the validity and reliability of the instrument, factor analysis and reliability test were performed. Analysis revealed that there are positive and significant relationships between codification and personalization knowledge sharing strategies and each of the organizational excellence pillars. The results of multiple regression analyses indicated that codification knowledge sharing strategies is a more significant predictor of each organizational pillar than personalization knowledge sharing strategies. The results of this study could encourage public organizations in adopting knowledge sharing strategies to enhance their organizational excellence.

Assessing the Relationship between Knowledge Management Capabilities, Learning Organization and Organizational Performance in Road and Transport Authority of Dubai

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of knowledge management capabilities on organizational performance in the public sector. Learning organization was included as a mediator to investigate its effect on the relationship between knowledge management capabilities and organizational performance. The conceptual framework provided a useful perspective to study knowledge management capabilities in a government setting in Dubai. Two hundred and fifty-five usable questionnaires were collected from the survey. The respondents were executives, managers and directors of the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. SPSS version 21 and AMOS version 20 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) were utilized to test the conceptual model. The findings show that knowledge management capabilities have a positive and significant relationship with organizational performance. Learning organization fully mediates the relationship between knowledge management capabilities and organizational performance. The study only focuses on the Roads and Transport Authority, which is one of the government agencies in Dubai. Recommendations are provided to offer practitioners alternative solutions to their weaknesses and set strategies to improve the effectiveness of their knowledge management capabilities to promote continuous learning in the organization. This is the first study of knowledge management and learning organization carried out in Dubai or the United Arab Emirates in the public sector.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN ABU DHABI: A STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELING (SEM) APPROACH

The aim of this study is to measure the knowledge management strategies and organizational performance in Abu Dhabi utilizing a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The research method of this research is a solely quantitative method where the total sample size is considered 331 employing simple random sampling. For this research, the structural model exhibited the relationships among the variables. The findings reveal that, knowledge management structure is positively related to knowledge management strategy, same to knowledge management practice is positively related to knowledge management strategy. However, knowledge management structure was found not really positively related to organizational performance. Unexpectedly, knowledge management practice has not also found significant either in terms of positively related to organizational performance. On the other hand, knowledge management strategy is positively related to organizational performance as well as reciprocal relationship found between knowledge management structure and knowledge management practice. This research has contributed to the existing knowledge by providing an empirically validated model which could be used to predict the organizational performance as a whole.

Impact of knowledge management processes on business performance: Evidence from Kuwait

The purpose of this research study is to investigate the relationship between knowledge management (KM) processes and the level of business performance of organizations in Kuwait. The research utilized a survey that was administered to 500 employees of 139 private and government companies in Kuwait. Tests of validity and reliability confirmed the use of the survey instrument whereas factor analysis revealed 4 main factors whose impact on performance was assessed. The research results revealed that all 4 KM processes examined (i.e., knowledge generation and development, codification and storage, transfer and sharing, and use and evaluation) have a positive and significant impact on perceived business performance. Additionally, the research revealed that KM processes have the highest impact on innovation performance. The limitation of this study is mainly related to the limited geographical scope of the research, because the survey covered only companies from Kuwait. The originality of the research comes from geographical area covered. Virtually, no empirical research has been undertaken in area of knowledge management in Kuwait, as an oil-dependent country.

The positive impact of KM in organizations has been well studied and documented. Public organizations in developing countries should take full advantage of this concept to increase efficiency and effectiveness of their services. Study design/methodology/approach: With the research, we will provide guidelines for an acceptable KM policy that mobilizes organizational knowledge made up of knowledge resources in the public service in Nigeria. We will investigate the role of e-government, because of huge government investments in ICT, and what will contribute to progress towards the implementation of KM practices and procedures within the public organization. Findings: As a case study, we take the TetFund, who connect 177 government run tertiary institutions. With survey, followed by statistical methods we get the results about the interactions of various KM metrices. Originality/value: On the basis of findings, we will provide the adequate recommendations about KM framework adoptable to the public service in Nigeria that would improve performance of the TetFund.

The Impact of Knowledge Management on Organizational Productivity: A Case Study on Koosar Bank of Iran

Knowledge is becoming a valuable asset for most organizations and the quest to manage this asset is gaining popularity among researchers and management. Organizational management’s main objective is to ensure effective and efficient use of its diverse resources such as labor, capital, materials, energy and information in their quest to achieve competitiveness as well as to increase productivity that must be managed. In today’s rapid technological change, companies are in constant struggle to maintain competitive advantage through market differentiation by providing superior products and services. The management in organizations is increasing their focus on employees’ know-how, past experiences and expertise in their quest to excel in achieving their goal. In short, Knowledge has become an integral asset for most organizational functionalities. Knowledge management promises to create the proper structure and the necessary technological infrastructure in organizations and humandriven placement. This research investigates the role of “tacit” knowledge sharing on organizational productivity. Accordingly, a framework was developed and hypotheses were drawn and tested where results demonstrated interesting insights into the role of sharing on organizational productivity. The survey, which was conducted at Koosa Bank of Iran, demonstrated that the employees’ intension to share and consequently the sharing of tacit knowledge has direct positive impacts on productivity. In addition, our analysis demonstrated that not only productivity would increase as a result of knowledge sharing, but also employees’ innovative contributions increased as a result of exposure to others’ knowledge, expertise, and experiences.
