AN ASSESMENT OF INTERNET UTILISATION IN SELECTED AGRICULTURAL COLLEGES IN PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

The study investigated the patterns of Internet use among students of agriculture in some selected colleges of agriculture in Plateau State, Nigeria. A well structured questionnaire was distributed among the 128 HND students of agriculture in colleges of agriculture in Plateau State. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 17.0.1 was used in analysing the data. The present study demonstrates and elaborates the various aspects of Internet use such as; most frequently used place for internet use, purpose for which the Internet is used, use of Internet services, problems faced by users and satisfaction level of users with Internet facility provided in the colleges. The study results revealed that 78.1% of the respondents use the Internet for research, 45.3% access the Internet at a cyber café, slow access speed is the major problem faced by users(48.8%), students between the ages of 20 to 25 years of age spend more time on the Internet than other age categories(43.8%), majority of the respondents utilized the World Wide Web service of the Internet (50.8%) and there is significant association (perfectly positive relationship) between Internet facility, awareness and Internet use. Some suggestions have been put forth to make the service more beneficial for the academic community of agricultural colleges under study.

Information and Communication Technologies Usage among Agricultural Students of Tertiary Institutions in Southwest of Nigeria

The study examined information and communication technologies usage among agricultural students of tertiary institution in Southwest of Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 300 agricultural students from tertiary institutions. Structured questionnaire was employed to elicit information on students’ socioeconomic characteristics, availability of ICTs, accessibility and purposes of ICTs usage. Data were subjected to percentage, chi-square, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the Analysis of variance at p=0.05. THE USE OF COMPUTERS AND INTERNET AS SUPPLEMENTARY SOURCE OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL (A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE ISHIAGU, IVO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EBONYI STATE

This study was conducted to access the use of computers and internet as supplementary source of educational material to enhance quality education, improve educational management and planning. How students use computers and internet to facilitate their learning, how lecturers in Tertiary Institutions use computer and internet to teach and guide students. Education is a very socially oriented activity and quality education has traditionally been associated with strong teachers having high degree of personal contact with learners. The use of ICT in education lends itself to more student-centered learning setting and often this creates some tensions for lecturers and students. Data collection was done using structured questionnaire and the data was subjected to SPSS version 15.0 for analysis, while descriptive statistics was used. The result shows that high percentage of the respondents preferred using ICTs in teaching and learning. The researcher also suggested further study on the topic.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN COMPUTER ACCESS AND LITERACY –AMONG AGRICULTURAL STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST IN GHANA

Computer and its related technologies have become a standard and an enabling tool in almost every career worldwide. Therefore the issue of computer access and literacy have become important for higher education and institutions which churns out graduates for the world of work. The Information Communication Technology (ICT) policy of University of Cape Coast, Ghana is to ensure that all graduates acquire proficiency in ICT. ICT literacy and access are components of agricultural curriculum. The paper presents findings of a study that determined gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural students at University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Survey design involving the use of questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. A cluster random sampling procedure was used to sample 144 respondents out the population of 585 undergraduate students in the School of Agriculture. The study concluded that there are gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural undergraduates at the University of Cape Coast. The study recommends compulsory ICT proficiency course and a scheme to acquire Personal Computers for students to bridge the computer access and literacy gap.

Internet Use in the Developing World: A Case Study of an African University

The internet has become an indispensable tool in the twenty first century. However, the development may be slowed by a lack of appropriate facilities in less developed nations. A study of existing facilities in Burkina Faso was undertaken to answer five questions on the participants' perspectives on internet usage: (a) how do the participants perceive internet utilisation; (b) what factors encourage the use of the internet; (c) what factors discourage internet usage; (d) is the internet a tool for enhancing learning and (e) how can improved management of available technology lead to greater internet usage in the Humanities Faculty at Ouagadougou University? Participants were selected because of their interest and involvement with technology, their computer knowledge and their prior experience with the internet. The current status of internet knowledge and utilisation were examined and factors that influenced internet usage were considered. Six recommendations for improved practice at the post-secondary level were discussed.

Utilization of the internet by undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

The internet technology over the past few decades has become an important tool in higher education for learning, teaching and research. The study investigated the internet activities engaged in, frequency of use of the internet and challenges limiting the use of the internet among the undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted. A close-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from 300 undergraduate students. Findings were analysed using descriptive statistics and the result indicated that the respondents had good computer skills and used the internet for various activities which vary across faculty of study. The respondents were dissatisfied with the high cost of accessing the internet and inadequate internet facilities. The major recommendation of the study is the provision of basic internet training for the students; equipping the university with adequate internet facilities; regular power supply and free internet access to all university students.

An Evaluation on The Knowledge and The Level of Internet Technology Usage Among Tertiary Students

There is less research conducted to evaluate how students have adopted these new technological developments (internet applications and services) in Ghana. The level and capacity of internet usage among students in Ghana differ significantly from that of students in the developed and underdeveloped countries. Therefore, this study is conducted to address these issues by filling the existing gaps by evaluating the knowledge and level of usage of internet technology among students of Presbyterian University College, Ghana. The study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey to assess the level of students' awareness of the internet services offered by the university. The different types of internet applications and search engines that the students use, the kind of activities students look for on the internet, students' skills in accessing the internet services, and the student's level of skill in evaluating/authenticating the internet content among university students. A disproportional stratified random sampling technique is used in selecting 297 students. The solution from this study revealed that the kind of activities students mostly used the internet for included social media networking, E-learning, discussions /newsgroup, assignments and research communication, recreational purposes, reading news items, streaming and downloading movies. Most respondents did not know or have any skill in evaluating/authenticating internet content. In contrast, a few understood and had some expertise in evaluating and validating the content on the internet.

INTERNET UTILIZATION PATTERN AMONG AGRICULTURAL STUDENTS

An exploratory study on internet utilization pattern among agriculture student is conducted in the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology Kanpur. Examine study, Information sharing and entertainment related factors that may affect the adoption of an innovation or product such as personal computer laptop mobile etc. For the study, a scale was developed by Department of Agricultural extension to measure internet utilization pattern of 120 students and students were approached personally by the investigator for the collection of relevant data the result of study suggests that most of the respondents have the positive effect on their overall performance due to internet use.

THE USE OF INTERNET BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN SELECTED UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

This study examined undergraduate students' use of Internet in some selected universities in Nigeria. Specifically, the study determined the undergraduate students' point of Internet accessibility, how often they use the various resources on the Internet and the challenges experienced in using the Internet. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and data were collected by administering questionnaires to four hundred respondents randomly selected from five faculties; Faculties of Education, Science, Agriculture, Art and Social Science out of which three hundred and fifty two were retrieved and analyzed. The results showed that undergraduate students do not have adequate access to Internet in the universities under investigation. The result on the use of Internet resources by the undergraduate students showed that they very often used some Internet resources such as Face-book, World Wide Web and Search engines. Other resources such as Youtube, Skype, Twitter, Internet video, Internet audio and Scientific and satellite imaging were seldom used. The results on challenges encountered by the undergraduate students showed that they lacked basic Internet search skills and experienced high cost of usage. It is therefore recommended to the universities concerned and Federal government to make Internet accessible to undergraduate students through supplying them with personal laptops and access code to the universities network service provider or making it a pre-requisite for admission; students should be required to take computer as a course training, awareness or workshops on the use of Internet resources in research and academic activities should be given.
