An Analysis of Speech Act Ability Conducted by the Students of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Metro

This research is entitled The An Analysis of Speech Act Ability Conducted by the Students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Metro. It aims to analyze the language strategy and the usage of language politeness toward students’ speech act ability in speaking interaction in Muhammadiyah University of Metro. This is a descriptive qualitative analysis. The population of data is taken from the students of the fifth semester in Muhammadiyah University of Metro. The data collecting technique used in this research is noting technique and participative observation technique. Data analysis technique uses pragmatic identity method. The result of data analysis is presented with informal forms. The results show that there are three kinds of speech act strategy in language communication; namely, 1) locutionary 2) illocutionary, and 3) perlocutionary act. The politeness language usage, however, can be divided into direct and indirect speech and it covers reason, apology, gratitude, and request.

SPEECH ACT ANALYSIS ON THE ENGLISH CONVERSATION BY INDONESIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN AN EFL CLASSROOM

This research aimed to explore the types, the functions, and the forms of speech acts uttered by the students on their EFL classroom communication, and to examine the students' perceptions on the use of speech act in an EFL classroom communication. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects and the respondents of this research were the students of English Department at the first and the third semester of SembilanBelas November University of Kolaka which were selected through conveniently selected sampling. The data of this research were collected by employing video recording and online survey. The obtained data was analyzed in three major phases namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research revealed five types of speech act uttered by the students in EFL classroom communication namely directive speech act, representative speech act, commisive speech act, declarative speech act, and expressive speech act. Furthermore, each type of the speech acts was uttered in different functions.

The current research objectives were to analyse the eleventh grade students’ textbook in the Senior Vocational High School publishes by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education based on the 2013 Curriculum. Speech Acts in EFL Classrooms

Speech act is a functional unit in the form of an act which helps humans understand or accomplish things with words in communication. This research was aimed to find out and analyse the types of speech acts which were performed by teachers and students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The researcher employed the speech act theory from Cruse (2000) to analyse and interpret the research results. Qualitative research was applied in this research due to the data source was from the teaching and learning activities in naturalistic environments in English classrooms. The subjects of this research were teachers and students in REAL Equivalent English classrooms. The results showed that there were three types of speech acts found in the interactions between the teachers and students, namely locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. Locutionary act was performed when teachers and students uttered expressions with no certain intentions. Illocutionary act, on the other hand, was performed when the expressions contained certain intentions to listeners. Perlocutionary act was performed when the listeners showed responses and acted as feedback to the speakers' utterances. By conducting this research, the researcher hopes that it can give more insights to readers regarding to the study of speech act theory in pragmatics field.

Speech Acts Analysis in College Discourse at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Mataram in Academic Year 2016/2017

In expressing something, speakers showed an action. This action could make the listeners easier to know what the speakers intended to. This is called speech act. The purpose of this research was to analyze the types of speech act used in college discourse at the English departement of Muhammadiyah University of Mataram. The researcher used those speeches as the data. The researcher took 14 students of English departement at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram as the participants. Observation was used as the data collection procedure. The result of research revealed that the aspects of speech act used at the college discourse analyzed by the researcher were: locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. From those three aspects analyzed by the researcher, illocutionary act was the most often used in college discourse at the English departement of Muhammadiyah University of Mataram.

Speech Act Analysis of English Teacher Talk at SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung

Teachers’ talk is a factor that may entail to the smoothness of English teaching and learning experience. Besides, language used by teacher in the classroom is crucial, because it will influence students’ learning process and development. This study investigated the speech acts in the teacher talk at SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung. This study involved the Seventh Grade English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung as the data source. Furthermore, this study used Searle’s theory of speech acts classification as the instrument for analyzing the data. Based on the analysis, there were only four types of speech acts found in the teacher talk, 68 % directive speech act, assertive speech acts with 14 %, and the last two of speech act, commissive and expressive speech act, were only 10 % and 8 % in the teacher talk during the teaching-learning process. A Speech Act Analysis of a Pre-Service Teacher in an EFL Classroom

Misunderstanding in communication may happen in an EFL classroom due to improper use of speech acts. This research aims to find out and analyze the classification of speech acts and the function performed by a pre-service English teacher at SMAN 7 Malang. This implies a qualitative descriptive study, looking at the pre-service English teacher's talk in an EFL classroom. The present study focuses on the classification of speech acts employed by Searle. The finding of this study indicates four speech act types uttered by the teacher. It consists of 41 representatives out of 185 utterances, 120 utterances of directive type, 7 utterances of commissive, and 17 utterances of expressive. Moreover, of all the most function used in each type, the questioning function was used the most with 73 occurrences. To conclude, the results of this study show that directive type dominates the data with 64.9% out of the utterances, followed by representatives at 22.2%, expressive at 9.2%, and commissive at 3.8%.
