Stability and variations of plasma parameters in the L-2M stellarator during excitation of the induction current in the regime of ECR plasma heating (original) (raw)

2008, Plasma Physics Reports

Results are presented from experimental studies of variations in the plasma parameters during the excitation of a multiaxis magnetic configuration by the induction current (up to 17 kA) in the basic magnetic configuration of the L-2M stellarator in the regime of ECR heating at a microwave power of ~200 kW (~1 MW m-3) and an average plasma density of (1-2) × 10 19 m-3. The current direction was chosen to reduce the net rotational transform (the so-called "negative" current). The current was high enough for the rotational transform to change its sign inside the plasma column. Computer simulations of the L-2M magnetic structure showed that the surface with a zero rotational transform is topologically unstable and gives rise to magnetic islands, i.e., to a multiaxis magnetic configuration. Magnetic measurements showed that, at negative currents above 10 kA, intense bursts of MHD oscillations with a clearly defined toroidal mode number n = 0 were observed in the frequency range of several kilohertz. Unfortunately, the experimental data are insufficient to draw the final conclusion on the transverse structure of these oscillations. The radial temperature profiles along the stellarator major radius in the equatorial plane were studied. It is found that the electron temperature decreases by a factor of 1.3 in the plasma core (r / a ≤ 0.6) and that the temperature jump is retained near the boundary. A change in turbulent fluctuations of the plasma density during the excitation of a negative current was studied using wave scattering diagnostics. It is found that the probability density function of the increments of fluctuations in the plasma core differs from a Gaussian distribution. The measured distribution is heavy-tailed and broadens in the presence of the current. It is found that the spectrum of turbulent fluctuations and their Doppler shift near the plasma boundary are nonuniform in the radial direction. This may be attributed to the shear of the poloidal velocity. The experimental results indicate that the formation of regions with a zero rotational transform in the plasma core somewhat intensifies plasma transport.

Statistical properties and radial structure of plasma turbulence in the boundary region of the L2-M stellarator

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1998

The structure of fluctuations and turbulent transport have been investigated in the plasma boundary region of the L2-M stellarator. Normalized fluctuation levels are in the range (3-20)% and fluctuations are dominated by frequencies below 300 kHz. In the edge plasma region located inside the last closed magnetic flux surface the radial coherence of fluctuations is due to high-frequency fluctuations (>100 kHz). The poloidal coherence is dominated by low frequencies. Linear coupling of resistive interchange modes is considered a candidate to explain the existence of highly radially correlated fluctuations in the high-frequency range.

Radial Convection of Plasma Structures in a Turbulent Rotating Magnetized-Plasma Column

Physical Review Letters, 2004

The turbulent regime of a rotating magnetized plasma column has been studied. The detection and the spatiotemporal analysis of structures by means of conditional sampling techniques is performed. Because of the overall rotation and centrifugal effects, the structures inside the turbulence move on average along a spiral trajectory leading to a net radial convection of the charged particles to the walls. The development of a poloidal electric field inside the structures has been measured. It leads to the observed outwards radial E B drift in agreement with the expectations of recent theoretical works.

Characterization of radial turbulent fluxes in the Santander linear plasma machine

Physics of Plasmas, 2014

It is shown that the statistical and correlation properties of the local turbulent flux measured at different radial locations of the cold, weakly ionized plasmas inside the Santander Linear Plasma Machine [Castellanos et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 47, 2067 (2005)] are consistent with diffusive-like transport dynamics. This is in contrast to the dynamical behavior inferred from similar measurements taken in hotter, fully ionized tokamak and stellarator edge plasmas, in which longterm correlations and other features characteristic of complex, non-diffusive transport dynamics have been reported in the past. These results may shed some light on a recent controversy regarding the possible universality of the dynamics of turbulent transport in magnetized plasmas.

Intrinsic rotation reversal, non-local transport, and turbulence transition in KSTAR L-mode plasmas

Nuclear Fusion, 2017

Experiments of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECH) power scan in KSTAR tokamak clearly demonstrate that both the cutoff density for non-local heat transport (NLT) and the threshold density for intrinsic rotation reversal can be determined by the collisionality. We demonstrate that NLT can be affected by ECH, and the intrinsic rotation direction follows the changes of NLT. The cutoff density of NLT and threshold density for rotation reversal can be significantly increased by ECH. The poloidal flow of turbulence in core plasma is in the electron and the ion diamagnetic direction in ECH plasmas and high density OH plasma, respectively. The autopower spectra of density fluctuation are almost the same in the outer region for both ECH and OH plasmas. On the other hand, the divergence in density fluctuation spectra at high frequency range between OH and ECH plasma is clearly observed in core region. The features of linear confinement and saturated confinement are also appeared in ECH plasma, which is similar to the linear ohmic confinement (LOC) mode and saturate ohmic confinement. (SOC) mode. All these observations in macroscopic parameters and micro fluctuations suggest a possible link between the macro phenomena and the structural changes in turbulence mode.

Rotation of a magnetized plasma

Physics of Plasmas, 2011

The plasma rotation in the axial magnetic field of the linear machine Mistral ͓A. Escarguel, Eur. Phys. J. D 56, 209 ͑2010͔͒ is well described by the assumption that the electrons injected from the source exit radially from the central column and are subject to the Lorentz force. Electrons and ions rotate together by ambipolarity. The solution of the momentum equations foresees correctly the observed radial dependence of the ionic radial velocity measured by laser induced fluorescence. The resolution of these equations is also in good agreement with the measured dependence of the rotation frequency on the applied magnetic field and on the background pressure.
