Experimental Comparison between Two Types of Hybrid Composite Materials in Compression Test
In this study two groups of hybrid composite materials were experimentally studied in static uniaxial compression test. The first group consisted of Kevlar/glass fiber and the second group consisted of carbon/glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin. Each group contained four subsets (A, B, C and D) of hybrid composite materials. Compression test was carried out according to ASTM D695 and each test was replicated five times. It was observed that for the same type of hybrid composites, placing carbon or Kevlar fiber layers at the top and bottom; and glass fiber layers in the middle did not give significant effects than placing glass fiber layers at the top and bottom and carbon or Kevlar fiber layers in the middle of the specimens under compressive test. Furthermore, the results showed that hybrid composite laminates for the same number of layers with carbon/glass fiber provided the highest amount of the compressive stress value up to 40% compared to the results of the group which was reinforced with Kevlar/glass fiber.
Microstructural Study and Evaluation of Few Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Composites
2017
Limitations of monolithic composite can be addressed by hybrid composites which are gaining importance in field of composites. An attempt has been made in making of hybrid composite comprising of bi-directional plain weaved Kevlar, S-glass and E-glass fibers reinforcements and epoxy matrix by vacuum bagging and hand layup methods. Few tests such as Hardness, Impact strength and Inter-laminar shear strength tests are conducted as per ASTM standards. Characterization of composites was carried out using SEM to analyze the material bonding, defects and failure behavior under load conditions. S-glass composite outperformed other composites performing better in all the test conditions but when combined with Kevlar the reduction in property is minimal and even microstructural study showed bonding of S-glass and Kevlar hybrids compared to S-glass is acceptable
Evaluation of tensile properties on Glass/Carbon/Kevlar fiber reinforced hybrid composites
Composites made of synthetic fiber combined hybrid composites are find many industrial applications. Due to high strength to light weight ratio, higher modulus significantly reduced cost. In this research, composite fiber in woven mat form is added to matrix element with varying stacking sequences of symmetrical laminates. Four various hybrid laminate composites having glass, kevlar and carbon fibers are the reinforcements in varying stacking sequences are produced using hand lay-up technique followed by compression molding. The mechanical strength of the produced composite is evaluated. Experimental results found that composite having stacking sequences of Carbon-Kevlar-Carbon-Kevlar-Carbon (C-K-C-K-C) has the highest value of tensile strength 385.09 MPa respectively. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is used to examine the morphology of fractured surface of hybrid composites during testing. SEM images revealed that hybrid composite with C-K-C-K-C had less defects on its fractured surface compared to other counter parts of the hybrid composites.

It should be noted that each of number of layers and type of reinforced materials under investigation resulted a typical effect on FRP composite properties being produced. It showed that each of these parameters influences the properties of the resulted composites in different ways. The research was to investigate the influence of processing parameters on the mechanical properties (tensile) of the composites and determine an optimum processing route. A considerable positive hybrid effect was noticed for tensile strength and tensile modulus, particularly for the samples consisting of more than one layer and reinforced with two kinds of fibers.

Tremendous growth has been incorporated in the field of composite materials in the current scenario where the engineering applications are highly demandable. Currently composites are being used to replace conventional metallic materials in a wide range of industries including aerospace, defense, aircraft, and textile which require structural materials with high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. Also natural fiber composites are currently replacing synthetic fiber composites of different applications in various engineering industries due to their low cost and eco-friendly in nature. In this work, twisted kenaf, and twisted kevlar (aramid fibers) have combined together to enhance the mechanical properties and also to improve high impact resistance with less contribution of kevlar which is very high in cost categorized next to carbon fibers. Here, the hybrid composites (natural and aramid) are done by using hand layup method, and various mechanical properties have been...
Mechanical properties of hybrid composites laminates reinforced with carbon and glass fibers
2014
Composite materials possess the characteristics of high stiffness and high fatigue strength, which are desirable for advanced aircraft components. However, the mechanical behavior of such materials depends upon a variety of factors such as fiber volume fraction, percentage of voids, lay-up order and reinforcement type, the effects of which are difficult to establish individually. The objective of the current study was to gain a better understanding of mechanical properties of hybrid composite laminate reinforced with weave carbon/glass fiber manufactured using vacuum assisted resin molding process with STR Midapoxy resin. Responses of weave carbon/epoxy and weave glass/epoxy laminates were also investigated to compare with that of hybrid samples. This experimental investigation was conducted to study the effect of hybrid composite specimen subjected to in-plane tensile, three-point-bending flexural and compressive loading on a universal testing machine according to ASTM standards. Hybrid polymer composites are the materials made by combining two or more different type of fibers in a matrix. Hybrid polymer composite material offers the designer to obtain the required properties in a controlled considerable extent by the choice of fibers and matrix. The properties are tailored in the material by selecting different kinds of fiber incorporated in the same resin matrix. They offer wide range of properties that cannot be obtained with a single type of reinforcement. Due to its high specific strengths, high specific modulus, low densities, light weight etc. based on its applications. Presently they are playing a vital role in aerospace, defence, transport, sport applications. Worldwide researches are keenly interested in finding out their behavior in real life exposed to various environmental conditions, variety of loads etc. In this paper, We fabricated carbon, e-glass and hybrid composites by using hand layup technique in uni-directional orientation with epoxy as a matrix material and conducted various tests such as tensile, compression on Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and hardness. The results are validated with FEA and observed that Al-6061-T6 which is used in manufacturing of military aircraft landing mats, truck bodies and frames etc. has a tensile strength of about 310.25Mpa.The tensile strength of hybrid fiber is 341Mpa which is higher than Al 6061-T6. We have compared the experimental results with ansys results and found that the experimental values are very close to the ansys results. But when compared within the fibers carbon fiber exhibited more strength when compared to other fibers
