Turkish version of the reliability and validity study of the sexual attitudes and belief survey

2010

There is not enough information about beliefs and attitudes of the nursing students regarding giving sexual counseling to the patients. This study examined the validity and reliability of the Turkish Sexual Attitudes and Belief Survey, to determine barriers and their possible causes that affect evaluation of the sexual problems that occur because of illnesses or treatments of patients. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of the survey and re-test text correlation value was found as 0.73 and 0.90, respectively (P \ 0.05). Turkish version of the Sexual Attitudes and Belief Survey is a valid and reliable scale to evaluate nursing students' beliefs and attitudes that affect giving sexual counseling to the patients.

Methods: Descriptive design: This study was administered in three elderly clubs in Mansoura city, Dakahlia Governorate. Subjects: 158 elderly people attending those clubs were included in the study. Data were collected through using four tools; Socio-demographic data and factor affecting sexual relationship, Knowledge about sexuality, Attitude and practice of elderly about sexuality. Results: The majority of the target subjects were females; more than half had moderate knowledge about sexuality and very few sexual relationships, most of the subjects reported that sexuality is unnecessary for them and that the most common risk factor influencing sexuality is the psychological condition. Conclusions: It was concluded that a negative correlation occurred between knowledge and attitude and the majority of target subjects had a neutral attitude. Therefore, it is recommended to implement a health education program about sexuality. This will help to improve knowledge, attitude and practice concerning sexuality.

The Meaning of Sexuality in Advanced Age: A Qualitative Study in Turkey

This study was planned as a qualitative study to identify the changes in the sex life and problems of 15 married women 60 years or older who presented to Family Health Centers affiliated with Istanbul Besiktas Community Health Center. Study data were collected using the questionnaire prepared by the researchers based on the literature, via face-to-face interview method. Based on the participants' perceptions and expressions of sexuality, the findings of the study were discussed using themes such as marital harmony, lack of sexual desire due to the feeling of loss, fraternity, feelings of friendship, dyspareunia due to vaginal dryness and lack of sexual desire because of the culture. Participants and their statements were codified in the order they were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 66.53 and the mean duration of marriage was 43.6 years. It was found that the participants who stated that their marital harmony was good perceived sexuality as a positive issue while those who had poor marital harmony perceived it as a negative issue; and that those who experienced loss had problems such as lack of sexual desire and dyspareunia due to the cultural environment and physical shortcomings. We propose that in order to improve health and enhance the quality of life at the advanced age, nursing and counseling services specific to that period are required.

Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Askas - Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale in Brazilian Elderly

2010

With the increased globalization of psychology and related fields, having reliable and valid measures that can be used in a number of languages and cultures is critical. Few guidelines or standards have been established in psychology for the translation and cultural adaptation of instruments. Usually little is reported in research publications about the translation and adaptation process thus making it difficult for journal readers and reviewers to adequately evaluate the equivalency and quality of an instrument. In this study, issues related to the translation and adaptation of assessment instruments for use in other cultures and/or languages are addressed. Existing literature on translation is reviewed and examples from the clinical child and family psychology field are given to illustrate relevant issues. Suggestions are made for avoiding common translation errors.

Examining the sexual function and related attitudes among aged women: A cross- sectional study

International Journal of Reproductive BioMedicine, 2016

Background: Sexual function and its subsequent satisfaction are among the most important aspects of women's life. However, this instinct could be influenced by some factors such as diseases, drug using, aging, and hormonal and physiologic changes associated with menopause, and sexual behavior. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence rates of sexual dysfunction, and related attitudes among aged women in Jahrom, Iran. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 746 postmenopausal women aged between 50 and 89 years old who had referred to obstetric and gynecologic clinic in Jahrom, from April to October 2014. Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire was used order to assess the sexual function. The cases were classified into three categories according to the attitude scores: negative (17-32), medium (33-38), and positive (39-48). One-way ANOVA test was used to determine the relationship between FSFI and attitude scores. Results: The participants' mean±SD age was 60.10±6.89 years and the total mean score of FSFI was 19.31±8.5. In addition, 81.5% of the women had sexual dysfunction (FSFI< 26.55) and only 147 women (18.5%) had normal sexual function (FSFI> 26.55). Almost 62.1% the women displayed a negative attitude towards sexuality and only 18.8% women had positive attitude. Feeling of dyspareunia (p= 0.02), lubrication (p< 0.0001), orgasm (p= 0.002) and satisfaction (p= 0.002) were significantly different between three categories of attitudes regarding sexuality, respectively Conclusion: Our data showed that sexual disorders were highly prevalent among postmenopausal women. The most affected problems were arousal, dyspareunia, and lubrication. More than half of the women had negative attitude towards sexual function consequently this could affect their sexual function. So, it seems screening of sexual dysfunction for finding the causes in women should be the main sexual health program. Also, it would be important to emphasis the role of physicians and experts on education and counseling in this subject.

Attitudes Towards Sexuality in Older Men and Women Across Europe: Similarities, Differences, and Associations with Their Sex Lives

Sexuality & Culture, 2018

The aim of the study was to explore attitudes towards sexuality and sexual behaviour in older adults in Norway, Denmark, Belgium, and Portugal. A cross-sectional survey with representative samples of the population aged 60-75 years recruited through phone registers in Norway (676 men and 594 women), Denmark (530 men and 515 women), Belgium (318 men and 672 women), and Portugal (236 men and 273 women) was conducted. The data collection was carried out using an anonymous postal questionnaire. Four dimensions of attitudes towards sexuality were identified: 'sex for love', 'sexual pressure in society', 'sex for well-being', and 'sexual changes and ageing'. Discriminant analyses identified three discriminant attitude functions: sex for well-being, sexual changes due to ageing, and sex for love. Portuguese men had positive attitudes towards sex as good for well-being in older adults but believed ageing was an obstacle to being sexual at this stage of life. Portuguese women believed sex was good for well-being and did not consider ageing an obstacle to sexual enjoyment. Norwegian men and Danish women believed changes in sexuality due to ageing were no obstacle to being sexual but did not believe that sex was good for well-being. The attitudes of Belgian and Danish men were largely inclined in the direction that sex is not particularly important for elderly people and that changes in sexuality occur due to the ageing process. Men and women were committed to the attitude of sex for love, although this was observed most in Belgian participants and least in Danish men. Positive attitudes towards sex for wellbeing and towards ageing and sexual changes correlated with less change in sexual interest and sexual enjoyment, and with increased frequency of intercourse and masturbation. To tailor successful sexual health interventions, attitudes of sexuality in older people should be addressed.

BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS THAT PERMEATE CARE ABOUT THE SEXUALITY OF THE ELDERLY PERSON (Atena Editora), 2022

Aging brings together a wide combination of anatomical, physiological and behavioral variables in the face of a remarkable morphofunctional involution in the sexual level of life. Given this context, the objective of this work was to carry out a systematic review based on the concept of sexuality, its care and development during old age from the medical point of view. For this, a bibliographic survey was carried out with key words guiding the theme. The research carried out showed that the attention given to the elderly person must also value sexuality; given that it is an essential tool that needs to be cared for and developed with knowledge. Thus, validating the UN proposal of SDG 3 of the 2030 Agenda, which seeks to promote well-being, mainly, as advocated in goal 3.7, which has the expected configuration of universal access to sexual health services by the elderly. However, it was found that there are flaws in the integrated medical execution, such as the lack of information explored by professionals about the sexuality of the elderly person, given the delicate content that covers the reality of the same, as a sexual figure, permeating spheres of imprint. both biological and psychosocial.
