A Study of Occupational Stress and Job Satisfaction of Police Personnel of Gujarat State

The present research was conducted in order to understand the occupational stress faced by the police personnel of Gujarat state and their levels of Job satisfaction with their lives. A total sample of 120 (60 males and 60 females) were taken for the study. Out of the 120 sample, 60 were armed and 60 were Unarmed Police Offices. Occupational Stress scale developed by A.K Shrivastava and A. P. Singh and Job Satisfaction scale developed by Singh and Sharma were used to gather data. The analysis of data was completed using t-test. The results of this study indicate that there is no significant difference in Occupational stress of Armed and Unarmed Police officers and similarly there is no significant difference in Occupational stress of Male and Female Police officers of both the groups. Moreover there is no significant difference in job satisfaction level of Armed and Unarmed Police officers. Policing is believed to be a nerve-wracking job. Stress is inevitably associated with uniformed services. Police personnel face multiple mental conflicts and internal turmoil, in their service period. The study is located in Kolkata. The aim of the study is to understand the police perception of stress, the different levels of stress arising from multiple sources-organizational and operational, within the police station and the department in its entirety. The study uses a mixed method approach to combine quantitative and qualitative data to get an extensive picture and understand the gravity of the situation. The unresolved frustrations and personal conflicts result in stress and in order to deal with it they develop their own coping mechanisms. The current study analyses this with the demographics and also looks into how a personnel is affected and the multiple ways of navigating through it.

The researcher observed police in several are doing their duty within the limitations of the legal frame in public all though they are being looked upon by the public in wrong perception so for stress among police officers is not being recognized as the major drawback of law enforcement professionals which is a bane for police professionals. Occupational stress among police persons in Jammu and Kashmir

This research paper is an attempt to study the level of occupational stress among Jammu and Kashmir police persons. This study is based on sample of 100 subjects 50 male (25 married and 25 unmarried) and 50 subjects female (25 married and 25 unmarried). The Occupational stress were measured by Occupational stress index (OSI) constructed by Dr. A. K. Srivastava and Dr. A. P. Singh department of Psychology Banaras Hindu University Varanasi. In the present study two independent variables were studied i.e. marital status and gender. Mean, S.D and t-test were applied for data analysis. The results reveal that the t-value of male and female subjects were not found significant at any level of confidence but the t-value of married and unmarried subjects were found significant at 0.05 level of confidence therefore marital status is an influencing factor of occupational stress. This study shows that no significant difference was found between the levels of occupational stress among male and female police persons. SEVEARITY INDEX OF POILCE STRESS IN GUJARAT: AN ANALYSIS OF MENTAL SYMPTOMS OF STRESS AMONG SELECTED POLICE PERSONNEL

Police Personnel of Gujarat are suffering from stress as quoted by the author himself in his previous research work in 2012. In this fast growing, globally competitive and Hi-Tech Arena it is important to check the severity of police stress. Treatment and best fitted coping strategies largely depends on the severity of stress. This study makes an attempt to check the severity of mental symptoms of stress among selected police personnel of Gujarat. The response were collected on a 5-point Likert scale which best fits in qualitative ranking but difficult to quantify exactly and differentiate the degree of response to find out the level of stress. For that purpose, the original response (5-point Scale) of the respondents have been converted into three quantitative categories by assigning a Zero to very low and low, One to moderate and Two for high and very high degree of response and the summation of these scores is termed as Severity Index (SI) of the respondents response to stress. The study makes an attempt to categorize the mental symptoms of stress into three categories i.e. High, Moderate and Low on the basis of severity and to check the severity with different demographic components.

Job Stress of Police Personnel in Tripura:An Analytical Study

Introduction: The job of Police is psychologically stressful which is filled with danger, high demands, and perplexity. The Police encounter human misery and death exposure. Aims: To assess job stress by police personnel among Constables and Officers of Tripura Police. Methodology: Community study done in police stations of West District of Tripura, Samples recruited from among the police personnel of different rank of Tripura Police by Systemic random sampling. Sample Size: Group A (Constable=83) & Group B (Officers=33). Inclusion criteria: Policeman in service ≥3 years, age ≥21 years, with minimum primary school educated. Exclusion criteria: who is unable to comprehend study questionnaire, on leave, exclusively doing clerical job, who are found inebriated. Self-reported questionnaire evaluated. Tools: Police specific Stress Questionnaire, measures of chronic job stressors. Results & Conclusion: 1/4th of constables have significantly stressed and 2/3rd of officers are significantly stressed. Positive linear relationship exists between age and stress in both the groups. Tenure of work has positive linear relationship only in officers. Officers are more stressed than constables. Bellow secondary constables are more stressed & Graduate officers are more stressed. No relationship exists between education and stress level. Mean score of neglected family life, job boredom, and quantitative work overload score is more in officers group and noxious physical environment, communication quality and praise is more in constables.

Stress Problems Faced by Police Constables

This research study more emphases on stress faced by Police Constables in North Chennai. This article analyses the data from a fifty sample size, and proposes ways to stress faced by police constable in north Chennai. The researcher covers the geographical area of Chennai and suburban, where researcher six police stations dealing with crime and law and order. The researcher used descriptive in nature. The researcher used convenient sampling method for selecting the respondents. Majority of the respondents 82 percent of the respondents were admit that they had psychosomatic complaints. 70 percent said that they easily get tempered. Most of the respondents 74 percent were agreed that expressed from of emotion is due to their occupation. Majority of the respondents 76 percent have the habit of smoking. Majority of 72 percent of the respondents had the habit of consuming alcohol. Majority of the respondents 74 percent agreed the lack of superior’s interest on subordinate is a cause for stress. Most of the respondents 70 agreed that irregular office work causes stress. 60 percent of the respondents agree with the statement that work beyond load is highly stressful. 72 percent of the respondents said dealing with criminals was stressful. 78 percent of the respondents confirmed the death of their relatives as stressful. Majority 74 percent of the respondents agreed that dealing with horrible sights caused stress.

Coping with Work Stress in Police Employees

Present study endeavored to investigate the role of coping in work stress of police employees. A 3 × 2 factorial design with three levels of job hierarchy (officers, subinspectors, and constables) and two levels of job tenure [short job tenure (0-10 year) and long job tenure (above 10 year)] was used in present study. A total of 240 police personnel from Gorakhpur Zone (India) participated as respondents. Objective Work Stress Scale, Feeling of Work Stress Scale (Cooper 1983), and Coping Scale (Carver et al. 1989) were used to determine the level of work stress and coping of the police employees. ANOVA results revealed that the level of work stress varied across different groups of police personnel. More specifically, objective work stress was found greater in sub-inspectors than constables and officers while constables reported more feeling of work stress than sub-inspectors and officers, respectively. Furthermore, the different groups of police personnel differed on various forms of coping response, in which officers used more active-and adaptive-related coping strategies than sub-inspectors and constables, respectively. Contrary to this, constables used more maladaptive coping strategies than sub-inspectors and officers. Correlation results evinced that active-and adaptive-related coping responses have an inverse link with work stress, whereas maladaptive coping responses have a positive relationship with work stress. Findings have been discussed in the light of organizational and personal factors.

Impact of Job Stress on Personaland Professional Life of Police Personnel

Police duty is always connected with responsibility, punctuality, dedication, and hard work, and it requires a high level of discipline. But police work is also related to stress, which is evident among the police personnel. Several studies reported the presence of stress among police personnel, which can have an impact on their personal and professional life. The night shifts, stressful events, frequent transfers, along with administrative/ organizational pressure, pose the police personnel to and physical and psychological danger. The occupational stress faced by the police personnel lead to anger and aggression and can adversely affect the family and personal life. The present article focuses on finding out the impact of job stress on various aspects of police personnel life, such as personal, social, and professional life.
