Objective: To assess the prevalence of complete edentulous patients suffering from elder abuse and analyze the relative impact of elder abuse upon complete denture prosthesis maintenance. Methods: The study was conducted in the postgraduate section of the department of prosthodontics at Subharti University. Sixty four elderly subjects, living with financially independent children were randomly selected and distributed into two groups depending upon the existence of elder abuse. The complete denture prosthesis was fabricated for all patients and was provided with a maintenance kit. Patients were recalled for routine follow ups (n=3) evaluations during which denture maintenance was assessed and scored, using a Dental Plaque Index (DPI). Parameters related to elder abuse were assessed in term of their frequency. Differences in the maintenance grades between the two groups were assessed using a Fisher exact test while differences in the mean of denture plaque index between two groups were assessed by using an unpaired 'T' test with a level of significance at p<0.001. The correlation between the existence of elder abuse and denture plaque index was done using a Karl Pearson test. Result: About 31% of the total screened patients were suffering from one or more forms of the elder abuse. 55 % of the subjects experienced more than one type of abuse while psychological abuse and neglect were most common (35%). Abusers were mostly son and daughter in law (54.5%). DPI scores between the two groups were statistically significant while the differences in the means of the denture plaque index between the two groups were also statistically significant. No correlation was found between the existence of elder abuse and poor denture hygiene maintenance. Conclusion: Elderly patients that report to a prosthodontist suffer from some form of elder abuse. Subjects suffering from elder abuse demonstrate poor denture maintenance than those who do not suffer from abuse. Further studies are required to establish the causal relation.

The objective of this study is to know and describe socio-demographic characteristics, care in conservation, and type of limitation or interference from the use of dental prostheses. This is a descriptive transversal study conducted with 167 elderly patients, dental prosthesis wearers, in an area covered by the Family Health Program of a municipality of Minas Gerais/Brazil. Data collection was performed at home or at the health unit. The results showed higher frequencies for age range 60|-70 years old (71.9%), incomplete primary education (64.1%), earning a minimum wage (58.5%) and making use of prostheses of 20|-40 years (49.7%). Most have prosthesis in inadequate conditions (70.1%), but perform proper hygiene (87.4%), 40% complain of discomfort, 60% have already switched prosthesis and 75% did not receive any information about prosthesis maintenance. It should be noted that the pursuit of oral health by dental prosthesis wearer depends on continued guidance. Descriptors: Total Pro...

Introduction To promote oral health among the elderly, we need to know their prosthetic status and prosthetic need. Hence, a survey of prosthetic status and need of elderly inmates of geriatric homes in Hyderabad was done. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken, and 174 subjects aged 60 years and above were examined of which 103 were male and 71 were female (59.2% males and 40.8% females). The oral examination of the study subjects was carried out using basic oral health surveys, WHO 1997 criteria. Results Majority of the subjects, 73 (70.8%) males and 53 (74.6%) females had no prosthesis. Only 4.6% had complete dentures and 21.1% had removable partial dentures and 10.9% had single/multiple bridges. Need for any prosthesis was (83.5%) male and 63 (88.7%) female subjects and nearly 82. 8% subjects required one-unit prosthesis. Conclusion Dental prosthetic status of people living in geriatric homes is very poor and there is high unmet need for prosthetic care exi...

Introduction. To promote oral health among the elderly, we need to know their prosthetic status and prosthetic need. Hence, a survey of prosthetic status and need of elderly inmates of old age homes in Mangalore was done. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was undertaken, and 133 subjects aged 60 years and above were examined (54.9% males and 45.1% females). Results. Eighty-eight percent of those examined were fully edentulous, and only 12% had complete dentures; none of the study subjects had partial dentures. Prosthetic status was significantly associated with gender (P=.024), while prosthetic need and gender were not significantly associated (P=.395). Conclusions. A high unmet need for prosthetic care existed among the institutionalized elderly surveyed.
The Quality of Removable Prostheses in Dentate, Community-Dwelling Elderly Residing in Puerto Rico
Journal of Prosthodontics, 2013
Purpose-Edentulism has been decreasing in the US elderly population; however, due to the increasing number of elderly, the need for prostheses has been projected to rise over the next several decades. One of the aims of the Puerto Rican Elderly Dental Health Study (PREDHS) was to assess the quality of removable prostheses (RP) in the Puerto Rican (PR) elderly (> 69 years of age) population. Methods-A cross-sectional design, using a subgroup from the Puerto Rican Elderly: Health Conditions (PREHCO) study of dentate, community-dwelling older adults from the greater San Juan area was employed. Eligible participants were administered structured questionnaires and examined in their homes by three trained and calibrated dentists using National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) criteria. Results-One hundred and eighty three (183) participants were examined (61 males, 122 females) (p < 0.001). Overall, 64% were found to have a prosthetic problem with no statistical difference between genders. Unadjusted and age-adjusted logistic models were employed. Increasing age was associated with both upper and lower clinically defined abraded prostheses, (p = 0.007; p = 0.041, respectively). Maxillary (23%) and mandibular (27%) prostheses needed replacement due to deficiencies. Conclusion-RP deficiencies were found in almost two-thirds of a representative sample of dentate 70+ year-old people residing in PR. There was no difference in the proportion of deficiencies between elderly who reported a dental visit in the preceding year or not having seen a dentist. A quarter of the prostheses required replacement. The findings from this and the NHANES studies demonstrate that an engaged and recognized prosthodontic dental school faculty continues to be as important now as it was a generation ago.
