Introduction: The Aloe vera and its components has been widely suggested for its ulcer protective action. Traditional Indian Siddha medical literature claims that washing the fresh Aloe vera gel (FAVG) has improved ulcer protective action due to the removal of bitter yellow latex. In this study, we compared the ulcer protective effect of unwashed as well as washed fresh Aloe vera gel in rats. Methods: We prepared washed and unwashed FAVG. Albino rats were fed with normal saline, ranitidine suspension, washed and unwashed FAVG for 8 days. Drugs have been tested in two ulcer models, in which indomethacin (20mg/kg) and ethanol (80%) were used for the induction of ulcer after animals were fasted for 24 hours. The animals were sacrificed and stomach was cut open to calculate mean ulcer index and a section was sent for histopathological examination. One Way ANOVA was done for analysis. Results: In indomethacin induced ulcer model, the mean ulcer index in control, ranitidine, washed and unwashed FAVG treatment groups were 7.67 ± 1.51, 1.92 ± 1.12, 2.17 ± 1.16 and 4.0 ± 1.09 respectively. The percentage of ulcer protection in washed FAVG treatment (71.71%) is comparable with ranitidine treatment (74.97%), whereas the unwashed FAVG showed only 47.84% ulcer protection. In ethanol induced ulcer model, the mean ulcer index in control, ranitidine, washed and unwashed FAVG treatment groups were 7.83 ± 1.51, 1.83 ± 0.82, 2.33 ±1.37 and 4.17 ± 1.47 respectively. The percentage of ulcer protection in washed FAVG treatment (70.24%) is comparable with ranitidine treatment (76.63%), whereas the unwashed FAVG showed only 46.74% ulcer protection. In both the above ulcer models, washing the FAVG showed statistically significant (p<0.05) reduction in ulcer index and improved ulcer protection. Conclusions: Washed fresh Aloe vera gel has shown higher ulcer protective activity compared to unwashed gel.
Amlexanox in treatment of Aphthous ulcers-A Systematic review Umamaheswari T.N, Shanmugasundaram P
Journal of Pharmacy Research 01/2013; 6(1):214-7. · 2.60 Impact Factor, 2013
Aphthous ulcers (Canker sores) are recurrent multiple ulcers occurring in oral mucosa mainly in the buccal mucosa, labial mucosa, floor of the mouth and tongue. The etiology for aphthous is still not clear though many predisposing factors like stress, trauma, immunologically mediated, infectious agents like virus etc., are considered. As the etiopathogenesis of the disease is multifactorial, treatment mainly aims in symptomatic management of pain or burning sensation using mainly topical anesthetics or antiseptics. To facilitate the healing process, various anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agents are also tried. A medication which could help in reduction of pain, ulcer size, erythema, ulcer duration and prevent recurrence is essential to treat the ulcers. The efficacy of Amlexanox in treatment of aphthous ulcers is tried in various clinical trials. This systematic review article aims in evaluation of Amlexanox efficacy in satisfying all the demands such as reduction of pain, ulcer size, ulcer duration erythema and recurrence.

Introduction:Ulcer serious health issue associated with high risk of mortality and morbidity. This study was carried out to determine protective effects of Aloe vera in indomethacin induced ulcers in albino rats. rnMaterials and Methods:Albino rats were divided into four group five rats per group. Group I: control group, placed on food and water only. Group II: Indomethacin induced gastric ulcer. Group III: Aloe vera pre-treated.Group IV: Omeprazole pre-treated group. Liver enzymes, ulcer index and histological changes on the stomach were studied using standard methods. Results:There was an increased in the serum levels of AST and ALT while ALP levels decreased in gastric ulcer untreated. These enzymes were observed to be normal in Aloe vera pre-treated group and omeprazole pre-treated group. There was also a decreased level of serum bicarbonate and an increased level of serum chloride in the gastric ulcer untreated group when compared to Aloe vera pre-treated group and omeprazole pr...

A comparative study between aloe vera gel dressing and conventional dressing in chronic wounds
International Surgery Journal, 2017
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and rate of healing of Aloe vera gel in treatment of chronic wounds, to compare the effectiveness of Aloe vera gel with conventional dressing (normal saline and povidone iodine) and to assess the percentage reduction of wound healing with Aloe vera gel dressing. Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital, DPU University, for a period of 2 months (from January 2017 to March 2017) and is a prospective and comparative randomized type of study using 50 cases (Group A and Group B, 25 each). The study was approved by the Institute’s Ethics Committee. Results: Data analysis showed that at the end of 4 weeks, mean surface area in Group A is reduced to 4.58 cm2 from 9.79 cm2 which is higher than that in the control group. Also, the average rate of healing in Aloe vera gel is more than control group. Percentage reduction in ulcer surface area was calculated to be much more in Group A as com...
