Indonesian English University Students' Perception on Plagiarism in an Online World

This study was to investigate Indonesian English University students' perception on plagiarism in an online world. This study was a mixed-method with explanatory sequential design. The population and sample in this study were 633 EFL students in a University in North Bali, Indonesia. Two instruments were employed to collect the data, namely a questionnaire and an interview guide which were developed based on three dimensions, namely knowledge about plagiarism, attitudes toward plagiarism, and beliefs to prevent plagiarism. The questionnaire consisted of 14 valid statements while the interview guide consisted of 19 valid questions. The data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that 62.88% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive knowledge about plagiarism, 69.87% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive attitudes toward plagiarism, and 72.27% of EFL students reported to have positive and very positive beliefs to prevent plagiarism. ...

Plagiarism is the act of taking the works of others and passing it off as one’s own. In recent years, this issue is increasing among students in all fields of educational sector due to the help of technology, especially the Internet. Ironically, technology is a double –edged sword. On one hand, it makes plagiarism too easy. Search engines and websites can provide so many materials and information on any topic that can be used easily by students. On the other hand, it can help a lot in preventing and identifying plagiarism through antiplagiarism software programs. In fact, there are several reasons that stand behind the plagiarizing behaviour of students. These reasons are reported in this paper along with some remedies and procedures referred to in the literature that can help to address students’ plagiarism. However, such remedies and procedures have some disadvantages. Therefore, there should be a comprehensive policy that involves all the elements that may help in preventing students’ plagiarism, namely faculty, students, administrators, and course syllabi.

It seems that plagiarism has not been seen as misconduct in higher education in some developing countries including in Indonesia which might be affected by cultural, economic, and technological issues. Preventing the plagiarism in digital age with Special Reference to Indian Universities

This article presents an analytical perspective about the plagiarism related issues in digital age with special reference to Indian Universities. Presently, India is third world's largest country for higher education system where more than 677 universities and 35829 collages are available for providing higher education. Plagiarism is an issue of research misconduct in academic and research community. In digital age plagiarism is copying words/text from any kind of information sources (Internet, books, magazines, journals, project reports, publications, white papers etc.) without proper citation. Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone else's work and attempting to pass it off as your own. In ICT era plagiarism detection is very easy job for academicians, researchers and publishers. To Preventing the plagiarism in Indian universities, INFLIBNET Centre on behalf of UGC, MHRD, and Govt. of India provided two anti-plagiarism software's "iThenticate" and "Turnitin" under the Shodhganga project to 110 universities for the one year in 2014. Currently, INFLIBNET Centre provided "Urkund" anti-plagiarism software to selected 135 Indian universities for the year 2015-16. Today, many more plagiarism detection software's (open source and proprietary) are available for easily use by academic institutions/universities. This paper also suggests the sustaining skills to avoid plagiarism or reduce the percentage of plagiarism in their submission research work to respective university/institution.

To Copy or not to Copy: Knowledge and Reasons for Plagiarism

To copy or not to copy is not an option for students to choose from, as copying one’s work or ideas is plagiarism, which is an unethical act and will be subject to severe punishment. Although awareness of plagiarism is commonly provided in many ways, students still commit it. Hence, the study was conducted with two objectives which are to determine the source of students’ knowledge on plagiarism, and to investigate the reasons for students committing plagiarism despite having knowledge on this matter. This quantitative research employed an online survey using a Google Form, which was distributed to the students via WhatsApp. The sample was obtained through purposive sampling. It consisted of 143 undergraduate degree students from a public university in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. THE RISING TIDE OF PLAGIARISM AND ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY: REFLECTIONS OF A CASE STUDY CONDUCTED IN THE SULTANATE OF OMAN

[Arial, 12-point, bold, centred] With the enhanced role of technology in academic circles and increased access to digital resources, it's much easier for students to cheat than ever before. There has been a noticeable increase in academic dishonesty and plagiarism. Cut, copy, paste culture is rife in campuses all over. While technology has promoted plagiarism, is it capable of providing a solution too? Does the onus fall on students alone or are the tutors and curriculum designers also to be blamed? This paper explores answers to questions on challenges students face in completing assignments, reasons that compel students to plagiarise, nature of plagiarism and how far do the plagiarism detection software like Turnitin help in keeping a check on plagiarism. Questionnaires and interviews are used to gather the perspectives of undergraduate level Omani EFL students and their tutors on plagiarism with specific reference to the role of technology in promoting as well as checking it at a tertiary level institution in the Sultanate of Oman. It is concluded that there is a profound need to promote academic integrity through awareness workshops, sessions on referencing, and exhaustive practice in summarising and paraphrasing. It is suggested that care should be taken in designing the assignments in a way that prevents plagiarism. The paper ends with certain hands on approaches adopted by the course designers of ESP (English for Special Purposes) courses and tutors to prevent and tackle plagiarism.

Investigating Plagiarism: The Form and the Motivation in Performing Plagiarism in High Education

The rapid development of information technology, especially the Internet is pointed out to be factor driving the student to practice plagiarism. Prevention efforts continue to be made both from government policies and stakeholder by creating software anti-plagiarism. However, in the reality the practice of plagiarism remains common and relatively more widespread. This practice continues to be varied, so that we need to update the information and findings through investigations plagiarism practices in student assignments. The method used was a mixed-method approach or mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. A quantitative approach was done by using software turnitin.com to scan for plagiarism indication of the level of student assignment in common. To study the behavior of plagiarism, the interview process was also done informally to students who commit high plagiarism. The results showed that the pattern of students' plagiarism consists of five forms: sham paraphrasing, illicit paraphrasing, other plagiarism, copying verbatim and purloining. Illicit paraphrasing practices are a form of copy-paste literature review and did not pay attention to the bibliography. Besides, the practice of plagiarism is closely associated with low academic writing knowledge. Therefore, the practice of plagiarism should not only be viewed from the perspective of the academic violations, but also from the other perspectives.

Understanding plagiarism in Indonesia from the lens of plagiarism policy: lessons for universities
