Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice of Healthcare Ethics and Law among Dental Graduates at the RV Dental College, Bengaluru

Objective To assess knowledge, attitudes and practices among the dental graduate in relation to healthcare ethics and law. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study design was employed using a self-administered questionnaire. A 15 item questionnaire about law and ethics was devised; tested and made available to all levels of gradates including teaching staff, postgraduates and intern at dental college in Bengaluru. A total of 116 graduates participated, with a response rate of 96.5% (n = 112). Results Seventy-six percent of the participants said that they are legally bound to treat all the patients who approach them for the treatment. Nearly 32% of the participants have mentioned the various other reasons for the rejection apart from the reason like HIV+, poor patients and patients with the contagious disease. Knowledge Regarding Dentists (Code of Ethics) Regulation among Dental Students in Mathura: A Cross-sectional Study

Background: "Ethics" is inferred from word "ethos" meaning custom or character. Ethics helps to support confidentiality, self-determination, veracity, and fidelity and encourages the well-being and impartiality of individual. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of dentist code of ethics among dental students in Mathura city. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was executed among 252 dental students studying in K. D. Dental College, Mathura, to assess the knowledge of dentists code of ethics. The study population was selected using convenient sampling. All the dental students studying in final year BDS, internship, and doing postgraduation were included in this study. A structured questionnaire consisted of total 19 questions related to their knowledge of dentists code of ethics regulation was used to assess knowledge about dental ethics. Results: While assessing the knowledge regarding dentist code of ethics, it was found that about 206 (81.7%) and 144 (57.1%) participants had knowledge that in the year 1948 Dentist Act was given and dentists (Code of Ethics) regulation was given by the Dental Council of India, respectively. Few participants, that is, 72 (28.6%) knew that refusing treatment of HIV positive patients was unethical for dental surgeon. However, 116 (46%) participants knew that supply or selling drugs at dental clinic were not unethical. Conclusion: The present study concluded that participants had sparse knowledge about dentists (Code of Ethics) regulation. It is essential to incorporate ethical standards in daily dental practice. It is needed to provide appropriate training methods in the dental profession for continuing toward acceptable ethical behavior in dentistry.

Dentists are one among the medical professionals who often encounter complex ethical issues. Playing the role of a health professional, business enterpriser and academician they often run into specific and conflicting ethical demands in practice and research. This cross-sectional study was conducted among dental professionals attached to educational institutions and private practitioners. A total of 95 participants, including private practitioners, faculty members, and post-graduate students, were recruited. A pre-validated, questionnaire containing questions related to awareness and perception in dental ethics was administered. Descriptive statistics was done to report the level of awareness and perception of dental professionals. Knowledge and Attitude Toward Informed Consent Among Private Dental Practitioners in Bathinda City, Punjab, India

Objectives: A study was conducted with the purpose to assess the knowledge and attitude towards informed consent among private dental practitioners in Bathinda City, Punjab, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all private dental practitioners in Bathinda City. A self-administered structured questionnaire consisting of 14 items was used to assess their knowledge and attitude regarding informed consent. The response format was based on a 3-point Likert scale. Oneway analysis of variance, independent sample t test, and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis were utilized for statistical analysis. Confidence level and level of significance were set at 95% and 5%, respectively. Results: The mean scores for knowledge and attitude were 19.37 AE 31.82 and 9.40 AE 1.72, respectively. Analysis revealed that qualification and years of experience was statistically significant among both dependent variables (p 0.05). Conclusion: An unbalanced knowledge of informed consent among the current dentists has suggested the need for awareness programs to fill the knowledge gaps and instill positive attitudes.

Ethical Issues in Modern Day Dental Practice

In modern dentistry, like other branches of medicine, a set of principles contribute in establishing codes of ethics. These codes which are based on ethical principles, religious beliefs and the social and cultural considerations guide the dental practitioners in their everyday practice and also establish expectations for dentists in fulfilling their ethical and professional duties to the patients, public and the profession itself. Ethical principles are the moral rules and foundations of justification source to be applied in order to exercise an ethical practice. The four principles of medical ethics; Respect for autonomy, Beneficence, non-maleficence and justice form the base of the modern dentistry that needs to be followed. The article gives an overview of how these principles form the backbone of modern day dental practice and thus, are indispensable to its working.
