3D Design Support for Rapid Virtual Prototyping of Manufacturing Systems
Procedia CIRP, 2013
The paper presents several 3D layout configurator software tools and a library of manufacturing system components to rapidly build up the 3D models of manufacturing systems; some analysis tools to analyze the created 3D models; and some methods to rapidly create 3D models from point cloud of scanned manufacturing facilities. Within the configurators the user can define the following data as input: production process (e.g. type and order of operations), type of production equipment, type of material handling systems (e.g. robots, conveyors), type and sub-type of layout, and some spatial constraints (e.g. distance between machines, spatial arrangement). The configurators are able to create the 3D model of the manufacturing systems based on the selection of an appropriate layout template. The layout templates are defined by the species identified with a cladistic classification system or by the sub-species where each sub-species inherits the characteristics of its species. Based on the selected layout template and the defined production process the appropriate elements of the manufacturing system can be selected by the user from a predefined component library. Such library includes the 3D models and technical data of workstations, machine tools, material handling equipment, etc. Two analysis tools have been developed to evaluate the created 3D models: a collision elimination tool and a robot programming tool. The paper also presents two solutions to rapidly create 3D models from point cloud of scanned manufacturing facilities; as well as an application to automatically create a simplified quasi-volumetric point cloud model that can be used for collision detection.
A software system for the simulation of robot based manufacturing processes
Robotics, 1986
A simulation system is described which supports programming of robot based manufacturing processes. A CAD system is used for geometric modelling. The system allows modelling of different object classes like robots, end-effectors, sensors, workpieces as well as the robot's environment. Control functions on different control hierarchies in the manufacturing system can be emulated. The emulation of the virtual robots is displayed graphically. Analysis and evaluation methods are applied to detect errors and conflicts in the simulated manufacturing process with the purpose of optimizing the program.
A Web-Based Solution Supporting CAD Assembly Model Exploration and Analysis
SN Computer Science, 2021
In the last decades, digital 3D models have substituted 2D technical drawings for the design and development of mechanical products. This results in a huge amount of CAD (computer-aided design) models available in legacy and Web repositories. 3D CAD models are now the reference product specification, and are frequently exchanged with customers and companies collaborating in the product development. In addition, this great amount of data can be exploited by scientists to test and evaluate their research results. Therefore, the visualization and analysis of CAD models from everywhere and through any device are particularly useful for both engineers and researchers. To answer this need, this paper presents a web-based solution exploiting the X3D capabilities for the direct visualization in the Web browser of CAD assemblies and of some of their characteristics remotely computed by the application on user demand.
Development of a virtual manufacturing assembly simulation system
Advances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
Assembly operations are a key component of modern manufacturing systems. Designing, planning, and conducting assembly operations represent an important part of the cost of a product. Virtual reality provides an efficient and cost-effective solution to manufacturing design, planning, and prototyping. Still there are certain issues (such as data translation, integration of various hardware and software systems, and real-time collision detection) faced while applying this advanced technology to the assembly domain. For example, existing works focus on using virtual reality systems and environments mainly to design new products and to plan for assembly. Little focus has been given to develop virtual reality environments that contribute to train operators on assembly operations and to bridge the gap between design and implementation/execution of assembly. Therefore, the research work presented in this article focuses on developing a fully functional virtual manufacturing assembly simulat...
Structure Modeling of Machine Tools and Internet-Based Implementation
Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference, 2005., 2005
Reconfigurability of machine tools is one of the critical factors to realize the responsive manufacturing systems to satisfy the mass-customization production. This paper presents the methods to model and simulate the machine tools on Internet in response to change in the machining requirements. Specifically, a set of module combination rules and a modeling method of the structure of machine tools using connectivity graph are developed. In response to the user requirements, kinematic relations and structures of machine tools can be derived using the module combination rules and connectivity graph relationships. Internet-based simulator of machine tools is implemented and presented. The developed machine tool simulator can be used to verify the structure of machine tools derived from the user requirements.

This paper presents a software architecture that enables VR-MDS (Virtual Reality Mechanism Design Studio) to simulate multi-body dynamics of computer-aided design (CAD) assemblies. VRMDS is a recently developed virtual environment dedicated to the conceptual design of mechanisms and machines. It allows users to build spatial or planar mechanisms through intuitive operations. In this paper, we develop Python's parsing modules that import CAD assembly models in either XML or MDL format files into VRMDS and visualize them through the use of WRL or OSG geometry files. CAD assembly models consist of parts as well as kinematic constraints among them. These parts and constraints can be translated into links and kinematic joints of mechanisms and machines. The dynamics simulation for the assembly is achieved by MATLAB SimMechanics solver that communicates with VRMDS through a dedicated Pymat interface and M-script files. Finally, two case studies are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of using assembly models in this virtual reality system for mechanism design. The high fidelity of the SimMechanics dynamics solver makes the simulation justified scientifically. The result is a highly integrated virtual reality design environment that is dedicated to both the concept design and virtual prototyping of machines.
Assembly Simulation in the Design Process in a Distributed Environment
Methods and Tools for Co-operative and Integrated Design, 2004
Simulation technology is applicable across a distributed enterprise in the pursuit o f bringing high quality products to the market in minimum time. The proliferation o f computing technology and software applications now makes simulations available to many organizations in an enterprise. Significant focus has been devoted to manufacturing facility simulation and the automation o f these simulations. The focus in this paper is assembly simulation early in a product design process in a distributed environment. The authors introduce a simulation framework, activity model, distributed simulation architecture, neutral data interfaces, and a case study of the use of assembly simulation early in the design process in a collaborative distributed environment.

This work presents a description of the implementation of the WebMachining methodology and system (http://WebMachining.AlvaresTech.com) developed in a context of e-Mfg, aiming at integrating CAD/CAPP/CAM for the remote manufacturing of cylindrical parts through the Internet. The methodology and its implementation are conceived starting from the modelling paradigm based on synthesis by design features, in order to allow the integration of the activities of collaborative design (WebCADbyFeatures), generative process planning (WebCAPP) and production (WebTurning). The system is implemented in a distributed environment of agents (agents' community), whose architecture is stratified in three levels: design, Process Planning and Production; being adopted Knowledge Query and Manipulation Language (KQML) as the language pattern of messages among the design, process planning and production agents.
