Counseling Practices of Pharmacists at Medical Stores/Pharmacies in Karachi Pakistan

Introduction: Dispensing medicines means delivering complete knowledge about the medicine being dispensed to that patient. Patient’s counseling regarding their medications play a very important role to achieve the high efficacy and proper constancy on therapy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the counseling practices of pharmacist from customers’ perspective. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross sectional study, conducted among who were selected at random at pharmacies/ medical stores, while purchasing medications for them and/or for their loved ones. The study finally included 365 patients or attendants of the patients. The data obtained were analyzed using appropriate statistical analysis through SPPS version 25. The study aimed to observe the problems faced during dispensing and counseling. A cross-sectional study was carried out in two different hospitals of Nepal. ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacy) 1997 and USP (The United States Pharmacopoeia) 1997 guidelines were used to ensure the completeness of the contents of the counseling. The extent of counseling fulfilled by the pharmacists was observed and recorded. Collected data was compiled, managed and analysed using SPSS and MS Excel. ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE OF PATIENT MEDICATION COUNSELING AMONG DRUG DISPENSERS IN JIMMA TOWN, OROMIA REGION, SOUTH WEST ETHIOPIA

Providing counseling to patients regarding their medication is a better means to improve patient compliance. The way drugs are dispensed and the type of information delivered during dispensing strictly determine the way drugs are utilized by patients and affect the expected out come. Clear and complete instructions on how to take or use drugs, risks and benefits of using medicines, adverse effects, when and how to use drugs are at least the vital drug information that should be delivered to patients by dispensers. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of patient counseling delivered by drug dispensers in Jimma town drug retail outlets, 2013. A cross sectional study was conducted by using self administered semi-structured questionnaire in Jimma town drug dispensers from January 20 to 30, 2013. Among 49 dispensers, 46.94% of them believed that patient counseling is pharmacy professionals’ responsibility while 44.90% believed it is a shared responsibility of prescribers and dispensers. 42.86% of dispensers always update their knowledge on drugs and their most frequently used drug information sources were formularies and guidelines. 82.86% of the dispensers respond that they know the formal way and the information included in patient counseling. From ten patient counseling activities assessed, only 18 37% of dispensers give more than half. Almost half of the dispensers believed that patient counseling is the responsibility of pharmacy professionals. The dispensers give less counseling activities other than giving drug information on dose, frequency and route of administration. High patient load and lack of time was major barrier of patient medication counseling by dispensers. So, formal education on patient medication should be included in pharmacy schools and continuous training should be given to increase dispensers’ knowledge on patient counseling.

Evaluation of Outpatient - Pharmacists' Counseling Behavior and Content in a Teaching Hospital in Jordan : An Observational Study

Pharmacists do have a unique opportunity to educate patients about their medications in order to identify, prevent and manage any potential problems they may have faced. This study aimed to characterize and evaluate the counseling behavior and content by pharmacists and pharmacy assistants in a sample of outpatient pharmacies in a teaching hospital in Jordan. The study was conducted in 6 outpatient pharmacies at the participating hospital; Endocrinology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Emergency staff. The study consisted of observing 60 patient-pharmacist/assistant interactions behaviors and counseling content (if exists) in 6 different outpatient pharmacies at the participating hospital. Observations were conducted by a trained researcher using a pre-validated and piloted data collection form. Out of the 60 observed interactions, only 18 interactions involved patient counseling, the type of which was both verbal and written. The initiator of counseling in 44.4% of the cases was the patient. More than 2/3 (70.0 %) of provided information to patients in all interactions was conducted using written labels only. The overall observed rate of counseling at the participating hospital pharmacies is low. There is a need to train pharmacists to offer more counseling to patients and have better communication and counseling skills.

Medication counselling and dispensing practices at community pharmacies: a comparative cross sectional study from Pakistan

Objectives The study aimed to assess and compare medication counselling and dispensing practices at community pharmacies in three major cities of Pakistan. Methods A total of 1113 patient dispenser interactions were observed from a randomly selected sample of 371 pharmacies by using convenient sampling technique in the three respective cities namely Islamabad (118), Peshawar (120) and Lahore (133). The data collection tool was adapted from WHO structure observation form and was modified according to the objectives of the study. Main Outcome Measures The process of prescription handling at community pharmacies in terms of patient dispenser interaction, prescription validation and medication counseling was assessed. The data was coded, entered and analyzed by using SPSS Version 16. Results A total of 1113 patient dispenser interactions were observed at the community pharmacies in the three respective cities namely Islamabad (n = 354), Peshawar (n = 360) and Lahore (n = 399). Knowledge, attitude and practice of patient medication counseling among drug dispensers in North West Ethiopia

Patient medication counseling on dispensing of medicines should give the patient clear and complete instructions on how to take or use drugs. The way drugs are taken by the patient is often influenced by the way drugs are dispensed and the type of information given during dispensing. The objective of this study was to assess drug dispensers' knowledge, attitude and practice of patient medication counseling in drug retail outlets of Gondar and Bahir Dar towns. A cross-sectional study was conducted on patient medication counseling by using a self-administered semi-structured questioner. The questionnaire was distributed to dispensers to fill in their home or at their free time and collected in the next day. Data were analyzed using SPSS for windows version 16.0. Forty (62.5%) of the dispensers believe that patient counseling is a shared responsibility of pharmacy professionals and physicians. Only 29.7% of the dispensers always update their knowledge on drugs and their most frequent source of drug information on drugs were leaflets. Forty nine (76.6%) of dispensers respond as they know the formal way and the information included in patient counseling. Lack of adequate knowledge on drugs and up-to-date drug information was major factor that prevent dispensers from counseling patients. Most of the dispensers are not accessible to up-to-date drug informations. The dispensers give less counseling. Lack of knowledge and update drug information was the major barrier of patient medication counseling dispensers faced. Formal education should include patient counseling and continuous training should be given to increase dispensers' knowledge on patient counseling. Up to date and relevant drug information sources should be given to dispensers.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of patient counselling in terms of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) outcomes among retail and hospital pharmacist in Satara and Sanagli district. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on knowledge, attitudes and practices of patient counselling adopted by retail and hospital pharmacists from different areas of Satara and Sangali district. A specially designed questionnaire was used for data collection. Total 190 respondents were analyzed for the study. Results: The highlighting result of the survey based project revealed that almost all retail as well as hospital pharmacists were practicing patient counselling without any charges and there is necessity of separate patient counselling cabinet. Pharmacist was lacking in adopting modern techniques, aids for counselling and 20% only attended patient counselling course (PCC) by Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council (MSPC). Conclusion: KAP study revealed the positive attitude, knowledge and existence of patient counselling practices but not done in an appropriate manner. Step should be taken by authorities, pharmacist and the patient to make counselling more effective.
