The impact of proliferation of private secondary schools on the quality of education in Ogun State

This study investigated the impact of proliferation of private secondary schools on the quality of education in Ogun State. To give direction to the study, two null hypotheses were postulated. The sample for the study comprised of 200 civil and public servants in the employment of Ogun State Government who were randomly selected. The instrument used for data collection was self- developed questionnaire. Data collected were analysed statistically with chi-square method at 95% confidence level. The results of data analyses showed that access to secondary education has not improved with proliferation of private secondary schools (X 2 = 18.93; df = 12; P = 0.09 > 0.05) and that the proliferation of private secondary schools contributed to better performance of students in public certificate examinations (X 2 = 24.56; df = 12; P = 0.00 < 0.05). This study was carried out to compare the quality and efficacy of private and public secondary schools in Idah Education Zone of Kogi State, Nigeria. The study compared the achievement of students in private and public secondary schools in Oral English using games technique as a teaching strategy One research question and one null-hypothesis guided the study. The quasi-experimental research design involving non-equivalent control group was used for the study. The sample consisted 304 JS III students drawn from eight intact classes in Idah Education Zone of Kogi State, Nigeria. Pre-test and post-test were administered to all the groups (treatment and control). A 60-item Oral English Achievement Test (OEAT) was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study was that students in private schools achieved higher than their counterparts in public schools. The paper recommends that government should carry out proper monitoring and supervision of teachers in public schools.

The study investigated the influence of political and economic factors on quality of secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and answered, two hypotheses were formulated and tested. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of all school principals, vice-principals and students in senior secondary schools II in Ibadan, 667 respondents were drawn all together for the study (the Viceprincipals and students). The main instruments used for the study was a self-developed questionnaires titled Political and Economic factors Questionnaire (PEFQ), Student Achievement Test (SAT) and Key Informant Interview. The two instruments yielded 0.78 and 0.83 reliability coefficient. Descriptive statistical tools of frequency counts and simple percentages were used to analyze the demographic data and research question one and two while inferential statistics of multiple regression analysis was used to test the two hypotheses at 0.05 level of significant. The result revealed that there is significant composite contribution of political and economic factors to quality of secondary schools (F(2,665) = 606.066 P = 0.000) and there is significant relative contribution of political and economic factors to quality of secondary schools ß = (0.167), t(667) = 2.002p<0.05 and ß = (0.164), t(667) = 2.547p<0.05. The study concluded that political and economic factors have a significant influence on quality of secondary schools.

The Proliferation of Unwholesome Private Primary and Secondary Schools without fulfilling the basic requirements for establishing private schools to ensure quality education for national development is a common phenomenon in Nigeria. With this in focus, therefore, the paper examined the following subtopics: chronicles of private primary and secondary education in Nigeria, reasons for private sector involvement in education in Nigeria, basic requirements for establishing private primary and secondary schools and quality education, relevance of primary and Secondary education to national development, proliferation of private primary and secondary schools and quality education in Nigeria, and implications of proliferation of unwholesome private primary and secondary schools in Nigeria for national development. It was therefore concluded that quality education is germane to national development. And that government should be pro-active in preventing any member of public with the intent of establishing a private school without the basic requirements from doing so, and at the same time educate them on the need to put the provision of quality education ahead of economic benefits.
The study investigated the private secondary schools and the effects 0/1 the development in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. The objective of the study was to find out whether the private secondary school has any effect on the development in Okrika local government area. It is a survey study. For this study, the students of both private and public secondary schools were used; the teachers of the same level and the parents of both were also used. The instruments used for this study are the questionnaires. The questionnaires were administered to the students, teachers and parents of six selected private and public secondary schools in Okrika Local Government Area. Five research questions were employed to be answered and analyzed the responses. The method of analysis was based on simple percentage for the research questions. The study revealed that private secondary schools have great effect on the development of education in Okrika Local Government Area by improving on the standard of education in the area for study. Thus the recommendation that private secondary schools be allowed to operate along side the public and the public and the private secondary schools should complement each other in order to ensure that qualitative education for all is attained ill the possible shortest time.

IMPACT OF PRIVATE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION ON EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT IN KATSINA STATE
The growing and increase demand for quality education by Nigerian citizen's call for cooperative involvement of all stakeholders. This demand paved way for the establishment of different private primary and secondary schools. Therefore, this paper sets to analyze and explore the impact of private school administration on educational advancement in Katsina State. Thus, the efficient method of research applied to come up with a reliable result, were in the form of conducting interviews with resource persons, consulting newspapers, magazines, archival and government documents, internet among others. Thus, in the course of a major finding, it was discovered that some of the people joining the business of private school believed money is bedrock. This lead to highest rate of examination malpractices, indiscipline and exploitation of teachers in most private school. From this paper, it is also clear that despite the role of private school on educational advancement in Katsina State it still face challenges, of which the way-out is for proprietors to maintain standard, avoid teacher's exploitation, parent prompt payment of school fees. Then government agencies, examination bodies, and NGOs should discharge their duties respectively and make provision for grant in form of aid.

This study was carried out to assess principals' perception of inhibitors of administration of quality secondary education among public secondary schools in Biase Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted to carry out the study. All the thirty-eight 38 principals and Vice principals of public secondary schools constituted the population and sample of the study using the census approach. An instrument titled: Principals' Perception of the Inhibitors of Administration of Quality Secondary Education Questionnaire (PPIAQSEQ) was developed by the researcher. The face validity of the instrument was established by three experts in Educational Management and Measurement and Evaluation all in the University of Calabar, using Cronbach's alpha reliability, the instrument obtained an alpha coefficient of .81. Data was collected and analyzed through simple percentages. The findings of the study revealed that averagely over 70 % of the respondents either agree or strongly agree that quality of teachers, teachers' salary, promotion pattern, availability of teachers, teacher welfare, industrial action, lack of instructional materials, delayed salary, teacher attrition, lack of libraries, lack of monthly impress, laboratories, textbooks, and lack of desk strongly inhibited administration of quality secondary education in Biase LGA of Cross River State, Nigeria. It was concluded that addressing the problem of funding will address if not completely a reasonable portion of the quality problems faced by the secondary education subsector. Consequently, it was recommended Government should ensure adequate budgetary allocation to education in line with UNESCO's benchmark of 26% of total annual budgetary allocation to education for developing nations.
Fundamental Problems Faced by the Management of Private Secondary Schools in Enugu Metropolis

This study is an examination of the fundamental problems faced by the management of private secondary schools in Enugu metropolis. The study specifically seeks to; determine whether funding constitutes a problem to the management of private secondary schools in Enugu Metropolis, and to determine whether the lack of physical facilities contribute to the problems of the management of private secondary schools in Enugu metropolis. The population for the study comprised of the two hundred and fifty (250) approved private secondary schools presently in Enugu metropolis with about five thousand and thirty (5030) secondary school teachers and one hundred and four (104) principals currently serving in all private secondary schools; stratified sampling procedures were used in selecting the required sample for this study, purposive sampling was used in this study in selecting ten schools. Simple random sampling using random number tables was then used to select 500 teachers and 10 principals from the schools. As a result, at Enugu east 4 secondary schools comprising of 190 teachers and 4 principals were selected; at Enugu north 3 secondary schools comprising of 165 teachers and 3 principals were selected; at Enugu south, 3 secondary schools 145 teachers and 3 principals were selected. Thus a total of 10 secondary schools, 500 teachers and 10 principals were sampled. Questionnaire which was validated by experts was the instrument used for data collection.
