Interorganizational Networks of E-Intermediaries: An Exploratory Study
In this theory-building research, we seek to understand how the emerging systems of e-intermediation influence the evolution of novel inter-organizational networks. We chose Yoox, a leading eintermediary in the fashion industry, as an exemplary case. We found that the core technological capabilities of the e-intermediator, rather than deterministically triggering a single coordination strategy (as mainstream literature predicts), have been exploited to develop a range of interaction approaches, including market, hierarchy, and cooperative network relationships. At this phase of our research in progress, we can extract provisionary propositions from our field study. The most representative propositions we elaborated are the following: (i) when Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) empower e-intermediation B2B interactions, they can effectively support market, hierarchy, or cooperative network interactions; that is, ICTs facilitate interorganizational dynamism; (ii) e-intermediation does not encourage, per se, preferential or typical inter-organizational coordination forms. Partnering organizations develop market and/or hierarchy and/or cooperative network interactions depending on their perceptions of irreplaceability, as well as on other factors such as managerial strategies, concerns, and previous relational experiences; (iii) in e-intermediation business networks, the e-intermediary's technological leadership is more likely to produce a long-term competitive advantage if it is leveraged to feed and enrich the e-intermediary's relational leadership dynamically over time.
Chapter 11 Interorganizational Information Systems and Interorganizational
2016
As the external environment and alliance partnerships become more complex, managers should consider appropriate partners to enhance the efficiency and performance of their chain, as well as to gain potential competitive advantages (Chang, et al., 2007). Additionally, due to increasing global competition many organizations are aware of the benefits of using electronic solutions to support their Business-to-Business (B2B) environment. Thus, they opt to establish an electronic infrastructure to carry out physical chain’s transactions and cover potential interorganizational relations. This would explain the prevalent use of interorganizational Information Systems (IOS) over previous years. Indeed, several well-known firms such as Wal-Mart, Dell Computer, and Carrefour have attained strategic advantages by setting IOS in their chains. In regard to their incontestable success within B2B networks, the chapter first focuses on the concept of information technology and particularly “interorg...
Interorganizational information systems and the structure and climate of seller-buyer relationships
Information & Management, 1995
This paper compares inter-organizational (IO) interaction and interorganizational information systems (IOS) in public and private sector. The purpose of the paper is to explore differences and similarities between egovernment and e-business focusing IOS and interaction. This is done in order to facilitate learning between the two fields. The point of departure is two case studies performed in private vs. public sectors. A comparative study is made using IO concepts from industrial markets that characterize an IO relationship (continuity, complexity, symmetry, and formality) and concepts that describe dimensions of such relationships (links, bonds, and ties). The results from the comparative study show that there are several similarities concerning interaction in relations between organizations in the two sectors. There are also differences depending on the level of analysis (empirical level vs. analytical level). The study shows the need to be explicit regarding organizational value, end-customer or client/citizen value and the type of objects that are exchanged in the interaction.
Interorganizational relationships and networks
Journal of Business Research, 2003
Relationships and networks have been analyzed with different theoretical backgrounds and methods, at different levels, and with different results and conclusions. This diversity promotes a better understanding of the antecedents, dynamics, and effects of relationships and networks. However, this diversity also creates problems to compare and integrate results and to develop a general theory based on cumulative evidence. Therefore, we want to offer a framework, which gives some overview and orientation by classifying and describing the different levels of analysis, the different theoretical and managerial perspectives, and the different objects of analysis, which have been used. This could guide the process of bringing together the different pieces of the research jigsaw called research in business-to-business markets. D
A Literature Survey on Forms, Antecedents, and Outcomes of Interorganizational Relationships
ABAC Journal, 2013
The partnership concept is extended by the philosophy of supply chain management into a multiform effort to manage the total flow of goods from the supplier to the final customer. To achieve efficiency and capture the target goals, different production activities are coordinated within the supply networks, as well as in different forms of interorganizational relationship. Regardless of the nature of relationship or types of business some external (uncertainty, global competition, etc.), interorganizational (interdependence, trust, commitment, goal congruency, etc.), and organizational (scarcity, associated cost, organizational capacity, etc.) factors influence the formation of interfirm relationships. The motive behind the formation of interorganizational relationships is to increase relational competitive advantages.

Interorganizational Systems Partnership Effectiveness
1997
Interorganizational systems (IOS) have become a required business practice for many companies with the partner relationship being an important factor in the effectiveness of the IOS. The establishment of trust between the partners of an IOS is often mentioned, yet, never examined when IOS research is reported. Using organizational theory as a foundation, this paper takes a macro approach in exploring the nature of the various IOS roles and discusses the significance of uncertainty, trust and communication on these roles. A model of the relationships between IOS role, uncertainty, trust and the choice of communication media is proposed.
Inter-organizational information systems research: a critical review and an integrative framework
37th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2004. Proceedings of the, 2004
This paper reviews the literature on interorganizational information systems. It has long been argued that information technology can have profound effects on the structure and process of inter-firm relationships. This proposition has gained additional importance with the advent of internet, and resultant forms of business to business transactions over the web. Despite the interest and volume of research on this topic few theoretical generalizations have emerged. The lack of theorization has been compounded by the fact that the literature has grown in many directions to address various technological and practitioner concerns. To date, there have not been many reviews that put this body of work in perspective. To address this gap we propose a framework to review this field of research, and provide a means to reconcile the differences and appreciate the complementarities that run through this research stream. Our framework is based on two important themes, Interorganizational information systems, and interorganizational relationships. We argue that the research in this area can be effectively analyzed by understanding the persuasion of the researchers regarding these two central themes. The review is followed by a discussion of future research directions in this area.
Relations in the Interorganizational Networks
International Journal of Social Sciences & Educational Studies, 2019
This article is a result of the systematic literature review of relations in the interorganizational networks in the business environment. In recent years, interest in interorganisational networks has been growing among researchers and practitioners. Many authors describing the network define it different due to their specific approach, therefore it has no one specified definition. One of the key advantages of networks in the possibility of collecting and exploring data at interorganizational level of analysis which reflects interdependences between organizations. This theoretical article aims to explain the role of relations in the interorganisational networks, which allow between management in contemporary practices of organizations and value in their development.
