Knowledge and attitude concerning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) among Taif Medical College students Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Background: To Assess the knowledge about childhood ASD among second and sixth year medical students in Taif medical college KSA. Methods: The cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in medical college - Taif City, KSA-from September to December 2016. All students of second and sixth year present at time of data collection were included in our study. Data collection was done by Knowledge About Childhood Autism Among Health Worker questionnaire from second and sixth year medical students. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20. Results: Second year (Group A) out of 163 students who completed the study 88 (54.0%) males, and 75 (46.0%) females, regarding sixth year (Group B) total respondents were 84 students 44 (52.4%) males and 40 (47.6%). Determination of the Autism Awareness in Women Who are Future Mothers

Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASB) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by continuing deficiencies in the social interactions and communication and restricted and repetitive behaviors. There is no definitive criterion in autism, but there are some important indicators to facilitate early diagnosis. This research was carried out to determine the awareness of female students about autism, to determine the lack of knowledge of women about autism and to determine the factors affecting it. Turkey's Eastern Black Sea Region Gumushane, Trabzon, Rize, Artvin, Giresun, including the Eastern Black Sea which are thought to represent the best of the Region 5 provinces that agree to participate in research studying at university in 2604 has reached female students. The average age of the students is 20.81 ± 2.79. It was determined that 72.5% of the students had information about autism, 28.9% of the respondents had information about internet autism from internet, 24% from written skies, 23.3% from formal education process, and 13.4% from television. In our study, it was found that 67.5% of the students stated that the mother was exposed to radiation and / or toxic agents during pregnancy, 66.3% said genetic factors, and 57.8% stated that the mother used drugs as a cause of autism. It is recommended that community-based awareness programs and other media platforms such as radio, print and social media be encouraged in order to increase mass awareness on autism. It is recommended that autism researches should be conducted in large samples by increasing the number of awareness campaigns on autism and strategic plans on autism should be made in line with the results.

Understanding Parent's Knowledge and Perception About Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the City of Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Evaluation of Mothers' Knowledge about Autism: Saudi Arabia

Autism is an advanced neurogenic disease condition with specific neurodevelopmental characteristics and deficiency in social relations and interaction, as well as limited rhythmic and stereotyped patterns of actions that habitually arise in the toddler stage of life. Mothers of children with autism were found to have greater levels of childcare-associated stress. This study aims to determine mothers' general knowledge of autism. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the mothers of autistic children in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, between 20 September and 20 December, 2019. The study included 63 mothers of autistic children. A 29-items questionnaire was created following a wide-ranging literature review. A pilot study was conducted on 20 mothers to assess the simplicity and understanding of the questionnaire. The data indicated that more than two thirds, i.e. 44(69.8%) of all respondents had a low level of or insufficient knowledge about autism, 19(30.2%) had a medium level, while none had a high level of knowledge. The results showed that the mother's job, the child's age, and the child order variables were important predictors, and the value was statistically significant at (α = 0.05) for the mothers' knowledge level. It could be concluded that Al Asha's mothers' children with autism lack the perception and knowledge of the signs and symptoms. Mothers were also found to need awareness programs for diagnosis and treatment approaches.

Autism Knowledge among the public in Saudis Arabia

Autism is defined as a neurodevelopmental syndrome that starts early in life and manifests as an unusual behaviors of negligence, independence, isolationism, and constant repetition that believed to be held by a defect in special areas of the brain that assembles what is known as " the social brain ". The disease is found to be highly heritable, with strong genetic association evidence. The aim of this study is to measure the Saudis general knowledge of ASD, the causes, the treatment, and their attitude toward it in order to determine the level and significance of the educational interventions needed to raise the awareness of the Saudi society about the disease and the proper ways to deal with it.

Assessment of Parental Knowledge, Awareness, and Perception About Autism Spectrum Disorders in Aseer Region, Southwestern Saudi Arabia

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects young children in social relatedness and communication besides other characteristics. A community's awareness and early intervention services in diagnosing and treating autistic children are essential for preventing the expected complications, eg language delay, social interaction, and intellectual ability. Aim: To assess the parent's knowledge and perceptions regarding autism and its associated clinical features and effects. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted targeting all available parents aged 18 years or more living in Aseer region. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire from randomly selected parents who attended outpatient clinics at Abha Maternity and Children Hospital and Aseer Central Hospital. Parents' knowledge regarding autism was assessed covering general knowledge, clinical features, social effects, consequences, and curability. Results: A total of 477 parents participated. Parents' ages ranged from 18 to 85 years. 261 (54.7%) parents were male and 216 (45.3%) were females. Nearly 65.6% of parents were university graduates and 28.3% had a secondary level of education. About 50.9% of the parents know that genetics play a major role in causing autism, 69.6% think that most children with autism have special talents or abilities, 64.2% know that delayed language development is one of the main symptoms of autism, 61.2% also know that repetitive movements of the hands and head are a common symptom of autism. About 36.9% of parents think that diagnosing a child with autism will lead to discrimination against the child, 33.3% of parents think that autism is a rare condition in this country compared to the West. Conclusion: The study showed that parents had poor knowledge levels regarding autism and its related clinical features, especially male parents with low levels of education. On the other hand, their perception of the disease and its frequency in the study area was satisfactory.

Evaluation of the Educational Program for Mothers and Its Effect on Knowledge and Practice Towards Their Children with Autism in Qassim Region

Introduction: One of the greatest popular neurodevelopmental disorders global is autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is described by language postponement, reduced communication interactions and repetitive patterns of behavior produced by ecological and genetic factors. So that, autism is linked with great cost to families, individuals, societies and government. This study aimed to identify the effect of health instructions guidelines on improving knowledge and practices of mothers regarding care of their children with autism. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducting at Ali Al-Tamimi Center for Autism in Oniazah at Qassim region in kingdom Saudi Arabia. A convenient sample of 60 mothers and their children with autism. Data was collected through three tools were used to collect data include structured interview questionnaire consisted of two main parts include socio-demographic data related mothers, personal characteristics of the children, Mothers' knowledge regarding autism and mother practice regarding care of children with autism. Results: The result of the study displayed that the post-test of knowledge and practice among mothers of children with autism were significantly adequate when compared to pre-test. The study finding revealed that Educational Program was effective in enhancing the knowledge and good practice among mothers regarding care of children with autism. Conclusion: the educational program statistically significantly improved the knowledge and practice of the studied mothers. Recommendation: Emphasize the significance of carrying out educational programs to increase knowledge, practice and improve the coping designs of the family caregivers taking children with autism.

Objective: Examine the awareness of autism spectrum disorders)ASD(in our community which would help in early recognition and improved support of affected families. Methods: A focused 20-item questionnaire was designed to survey the public awareness and knowledge of ASD. Personal interviews were conducted during an ASD awareness day, which was organized in a major shopping mall on February 20, 2015 in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Results: A total of 259 individuals participated in the study with 47% being <30 years of age and 57% being females. Females were more likely to think that autistic children can be employed in the future)p=0.008(, whereas males were more likely to think that autism is similar to mental retardation)p=0.005(. Conclusions: The public awareness of ASD needs improvement. Areas for targeted education were identified to help improve the quality of life of autistic children and their families.

KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE ABOUT AUTISM AMONG FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENTS IN WESTERN REGION OF SAUDI ARABIA IN THE YEAR 2020

Aim: To study the knowledge and attitude of family medicine residents about autism spectrum disorder in postgraduate programs of family medicine in western region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to February 2020 in Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The data were collected through an online questionnaire. Results: Out of 246 family medicine residents, 126 (52.0%) were female, with average age 28.3 (3.1), 91 (37.0%) were R4 and 65 (26.4%) were R3, 112 (45.5%) encountered cases of autism, 13 (5.3%) attend training program, and 38 (15.4%) reported family history of autism. The mean knowledge score was 12.8 indicating average level of knowledge, where 99 (40.2%) had moderate level of knowledge, 79 (32.1%) had poor knowledge, and 68 (27.6%) had good knowledge, 33 (13.4%) had an awareness about specialized Centre for autism in Saudi Arabia, half of the residents had positive attitude towards autism, A significant highest score was found among those who were in higher level of residency (p=0.003), and those who didn’t have a family history of autism (p=0.026). Conclusion: Family medicine residents showed average level of knowledge and attitude dealing with autism patients. Were, less than tenth attend training program in child mental health. and less than fifth had an awareness about specialized Centre for autism in Saudi Arabia. Recommendation: Decision makers and administrators in colleges and universities requested to give more attention to improve psychiatry curriculum including autism subject.

Knowledge and Attitude Towards Autism Among the General Public in Malaysia

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a range of neurodevelopmental disorders predominantly characterized by impaired social functioning and communication disturbances. Symptoms of autistic children may include repetitive movements, intense focus on one item, severe tantrum or self-abusive like behavior. In Malaysia, autism is still not clear and the public seems to lack good information or experience with people with ASD. Therefore, this study was investigated to describe the level of knowledge and attitude on ASD among public in Malaysia. A cross sectional study was conducted and Google link questionnaires containing demographic data, level of knowledge and attitude was distributed online via social media.
