Study of Potential Melayu Village as a Heritage Area in Semarang

The urban village is a settlement that was established in the early period of the formation city and is the embryo of Semarang. Melayu Village is a heritage area where the existing heritage assets is inseparable from the history of the past. The enviromental of Melayu Village is quality conditions suffered environmental degradation because the threat of catastrophic tidal flood, the level of residential density is high, and there are several old buildings that were damaged. Assets contained in this region shows the evolution of human life and settlements from time to time that are still functioning properly. Characteristics study of old Kampong Settlement in Batan Semarang City

The development of urban areas occurs due to the demands for space for activities from the community. Increased activity in the city center has an impact on increasing the need for housing. Kampong Batan is one of the settlements located in the downtown triangle area of Pandanaran road, Pemuda road and Gajah Mada road (PANDAMA). Kampong Batan is also one of the old kampongs that experienced the growth of residential areas due to the development of activities. The implication of the development of activities in the city center to Kampong Batan is experiencing changes that are seen physically and non-physically. Identification of Building and Environment Character Using A Quantitative Methods. Case: Kebayoran Baru Conservation Area, Jakarta

ABSTRACT Kebayoran Baru is a residential area that is located around the centre of South Jakarta (Prime Centre), namely the Commercial Centre Blok M. Because of its strategic location, the region has the potential to change from residential to commercial functions. Some regulations have been made to control the development, but physical and functional changes remains to continue, even more uncontrollable. With the increasing of demands of Kebayoran Baru conservation area development, the existing of regional regulations increasingly irrelevant. Therefore, reassessment is needed to determine a spatial planning strategy based on conservation principles, that is to reidentify the building and environment character of the area. The purpose of this research is to identify the building and environmentt character in Kebayoran Baru conservation area. The methods used are observation, interview, factor analysis, cluster analysis and superimpose map analysis. Result of factor analysis found five factors that form the character of Kebayoran Baru conservation area, i.e. 1) the closure and brightness of the fence; 2) visual transparency and enclosure of the corridor; 3) brightness of the colour of walls; 4) clearances and size of building lots; 5) ease of pedestrian accessibility. Based on those five factors building and environment character in Kebayoran Baru area is indicated with the presence of the fence, closure of the land and residential or commercial building function. Transformation of Activities and Space in Malay Kampong as Heritage Kampong in Semarang City

Urban development is a very dynamic process which determines by the function and the value of an area. Development of the city and the modernization causes social, economic and environmental changes and causes spatial transformation in the urban kampong. The spatial transformation cannot be generalized and have different forms. Malay Kampong is one of the kampongs in the Semarang city that still survives till now. The function of Malay Kampong was very vital and had enormous value in the colonial era so that it became a special attraction in the service trade sector. However, in the 20 th century, Malay Kampong changed its function which led to changes in spatial planning in the region. Based on the results of the analysis, there are indications of decreased activity in the region regarding economic, environmental and social aspects both in the context of physical and non-physical changes. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to make a spatial transformation that occurs in Malay Kampong Semarang. The qualitative method was used. This study discusses the historical role of Malay villages from the future, how to assess the character of space and activities in Malay Kampong and the spatial transformation in Malay Kampong. The output of this research is spatial transformation that occurs in Malay Kampong, Semarang City.

The Architectural Style Which Attracts People to the Traditional Urban Village: Kampong Bharu as a Case Study

The traditional village is one of the urban design typologies where its survival depends on its success in attracting people. The number of people visiting an area can be considered as one of the factors used in assessing the overall success of a place. However, due to rapid urbanisation, the unique character of traditional villages in urban areas or cities can be seen as outdated or considered as not worth preserving. Thus, this paper aims to identify the buildings within a village that can create a character for the area, and which act as important physical elements that contribute towards the success of a traditional village in an urban setting. Character-Defining Elements of Shophouses Buildings in Taiping, Perak

The quality of cultural resources in influencing the distinctiveness of a place is rooted in its tangible and intangible features or collectively known as character-defining elements. While it is undeniable that a place is noticeable and regarded as meaningful due to its cultural heritage values, it is important to know where these significances lie or reside in, along with its current importance to the local community. Nevertheless, there is no single definitive list of the elements that is made available to date. Therefore, this research attempts to explore the key features of a place that can contribute to the unique character of a town and substantially drive the subsequent conservation process. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Taiping, a small town in the state of Perak to identify the key elements that define the overall value of a place, particularly shophouses buildings. Tangible and intangible features were identified as the character-defining elements of shophouses that are worthy of being preserved and maintained. The paper concludes to an interesting result where an intangible characterdefining element is the most important feature that characterised the shophouses in the town.

Local Character Transformation in Historic City Center of Pangkalpinang

Regeneration of local cultural heritage is one way to strengthen the uniqueness and identity of the city in the era of globalization, that frequently seen as a threat to the existence of city identity. It is a very relevant issue for the corridor of Jalan Masjid Jamik, as a part of the historic downtown area in the city of Pangkalpinang. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of local character transformation in the corridor of Jalan Masjid Jamik. In this descriptive study, the identification and classification of architectural style of the facade elements of 62 buildings, as the research sample, was conducted by the author objectively and by subjective confirmation from the building owner. The results of the study exhibited that the city corridor of Jalan Masjid Jamik still has a strong Malay identity or character, because buildings with Malay architectural facade designs were observed predominantly. This local character appears alongside the global character dominated by Art Deco and Modern architectural style. The scale of trading and services conducted is one of the factors affecting the transformation of local character in the study area.

Physical Character of Kampung Setu Babakan, South Jakarta, as Betawi Cultural Heritage Region

Setu Babakan town which is located in Srengseng Sawah political districts, Jagakarsa sub-district, South Jakarta, is a region of settlement that are established as Betawi cultural heritage. This research discusses about representation of Betawi culture physical characters in Setu Babakan town. Culture characters could be faded with the advent of times due to lifestyle that has changes, but it could also be adhere with the awareness of the importance of preserving the existing culture. This study attempts to know how far do the Setu Babakan physical characters as Betawi culture heritage districts reflects the physical characters of Betawi native culture, so it can be found which physical characters that is still retained, that modificated, and that are totally changed. In addition, can also be found how many buildings which is still retaining the whole physical heritage of Betawi culture, which only retaining some of the physical heritage of Betawi culture, and which are not retaining the physical heritage of Betawi culture at all. Scope of this study was conducted throughout the area of Setu Babakan town so that the data be more accurate and to represent the overall condition of the area. The interview and questionnaire distribution was conducted to 21 respondents (20 respondents wich are Betawi ethnic and 1 respondent which is not Betawi ethnic, aged between 23-67 years old, islamist, with 3/4/5/6/10 family members)and the management of Setu Babakan town (Pak Buhori) to complement the data obtained through literature study and field observation about physical characters (buildings and outdoor layouts) and non-physical characters (rituality, social activities, religious, economic, abstinence, lifestyle, and education) of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town and the physical and nonphysical characters of Betawi native culture. Data from the respondents, interior photo of respondent's house, and respondents photo have been permitted by the concerned parties to be published. The observation and recovery data was undertaken along January-march 2018. Physical characters data (existing condition) that was obtained through direct observation in the field are strengthened by matching it with the existing condition in google street to avoid mistakes/inadvertence in the process of field observation. Physical characters observation is conducted by seeing one by one building, to know the authenticity level of its physical characters of Betawi culture in every building. All of the observation results were recorded by doing mapping. This research is qualitative-quantitative research approach descriptive and cultural. Analysis is conducted in descriptive and causal comparative approach qualitative-quantitative. The analysis begins by comparing the physical characters of Betawi native culture backed by the non-physical characters with physical characters of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town backed by the non-physical characters. Then doing macro mapping (showing number of buildings that retained the overall of physical characters of Betawi culture, that retained some of them, and that totally changed) and micro mapping (showing which physical characters that still been retained, modificated, nor totally changed) to know how far did the physical characters of Setu Babakan town as Betawi culture heritage districts reflected the physical characters of Betawi native culture and to know the factors that influence it. The research results show, the physical character application of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town has faded, so it needs to be developed again. Not until 50% of the buildings retained the physical characters of Betawi culture.

The Physical Design Attributes of Traditional Malay Kampong in Kampung Tanjung Bunut, Kuala Terengganu

The traditional Malay settlement, the kampongs (also known as villages) is formed slowly through generations. These living environments have been tested through time and merge harmoniously with nature surrounding. A kampong is one of the vernacular settlements in Malaysia that still exists in rural area nationwide. This settlement was represented manifestation of settlers aspiration and their socio-cultural needs. The arrangment of houses, the surrounding landscape and other physical component within the kampongs were formed organically and unplanned. Thus, those kind of housing setting believed can enhance social interaction among the neighborhoods.The main aim of this study is to explore and idenfity the quality of "unplanned" living environmet of the traditional Malay kampongs. In general, there are two categories of kampongs namely as "unplanned kampongs" and "well-planned kampongs". In this study, only the "unplanned kampongs" which is the traditional Malay kampngs have been selected as a case study. This study applied fully qualitative research with observation tehcniques. Kampung Tanjung Bunut, Kuala Terengganu have been frequently visited between the years of 2012 until the early years of 2014. The daily of settler activity within the kampong have been observed and recorded by using Nikon model D80 digital single-lens camera (DSLR). By using photo elicitation techniques, informants perception obtained in conventional interviews. They have been asked to comment on the images of their kampongs to stimulate the discussion process. Result insights from the fieldwork are presented and discussed. This fundamental study also describing on how physical design attributes of traditional Malay kampong in Kuala Terengganu influenced settler"s daily activity. Settlers were founded optimize their unplanned outdoor space as the "social space" where they do social activity together with others. Thus, this study suggests that by understanding the context of an unplanned settlement like kampongs setting, it may help the designers incorporate some of the attributes in these settlements for adoption in the modern housing scheme.
