To identify the physiological and anthropometric predictors of rhythmic gymnastics performance, which was defined from the total ranking score of each athlete in a national competition. Thirty-four rhythmic gymnasts were divided into 2 groups, elite (n = 15) and nonelite (n = 19), and they underwent a battery of anthropometric, physical fitness, and physiological measurements. The principal-components analysis extracted 6 components: anthropometric, flexibility, explosive strength, aerobic capacity, body dimensions, and anaerobic metabolism. These were used in a simultaneous multiple-regression procedure to determine which best explain the variance in rhythmic gymnastics performance. OBJECTIVE: Recently, new body indices, including body adiposity (BAI), a body shape (ABSI), and body roundness (BRI) indices have been developed to estimate adiposity. The aim of this study was to compare percent fat mass (%FM) with novel indices in an elite athlete population.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, %FM in 159 male and 50 female athletes using a four-component model was assessed. The %FM was compared with body mass index (BMI), BAI, ABSI, BRI, and with other %FM field methods (bioimpedance spectroscopy and skinfold prediction equation). These associations were determined using multilinear regression analysis, which resulted in predictive models of %FM in athletes. Cross-validation was performed using the prediction residual error sum of squares (PRESS) statistics method.
RESULTS: Although higher associations than other indices were observed, BRI still presented low coefficients of determination (men: R(2) = 0.36; women: R(2) = 0.25) when comparing with other field methods (R(2) range, 0.33-0.75). Using BAI as the independent variable, the R(2) was 0.07 for men and 0.14 for women. ABSI did not result in a significant association with %FM in women (R(2) = 0.05) while in men a significant association was found (R(2) = 0.22). The BMI model resulted in a R(2) = 0.20 for men and R(2) = 0.22 for women. Waist circumference and the sum of skinfolds were the anthropometric variables with the highest association with adiposity. New alternatives were presented with higher coefficients of determination (PRESS R(2) ranged from 0.47 to 0.71).
CONCLUSIONS: The newly developed body indices are limited in predicting %FM in elite athletes, particularly when compared with other commonly and readily available field methods like bioimpedance analysis or skinfold prediction models.

Heat stress evaluations in a particular thermal work environment also requires the need of estimating the metabolic heat generated from a human body. The estimation of this metabolic heat depends on the body surface area (BSA) of the targeted audience employed in that particular work environment. In this study an attempt was made to evaluate the different BSA estimates for a group of 51 metal casting workers. Nine different BSA expressions were evaluated based on the anthropometric variables of casting workers and a comparative analysis among these BSA estimates have been performed. The results concluded slightly considerable mean variations among the different BSA estimates, although strong association (at significance level of 0.01) was observed among the different BSA expressions.

The evaluation of clothing surface area becomes important in analyses of heat exchange between the clothed body and its environment. The evidence accumulated in the studies of radiation area has led to the conclusion that the ratio of clothing surface area to body surface area (fcl) may be defined as a function of clothing insulation. However, the effects of clothing fit have been disregarded. Radiation area factors (Ar/AD) were derived from pictures of five subjects wearing four different helicopter pilot suits. While sitting on a seat suspended in the center of a box-shaped frame, photographs were taken of the subjects with a fish-eye lens at 90 equidistant points on the six sides of the frame. The derived Ar/AD of 0.7 +/- 0.18 for the unclothed subjects closely agreed with that reported by Fanger, while it scattered in a relatively wide range for a given suit. To examine the association of body mass index (BMI), triceps skinfold thickness (TST) and percentage body fat (%BF) from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) with blood lipids, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in children. Cross-sectional study was conducted on 1280 schoolchildren aged 8-11 years from the Cuenca province (Spain). Data collection was conducted under standardized conditions, taking several measurements of each variable to enhance accuracy. Analyses were performed using age-adjusted correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression adjusted for age, BMI, TST and %BF. Correlations between %BF and apolipoprotein (apo) B, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), total cholesterol/HDL-c ratio and DBP were higher than those for BMI and TST. In contrast, the correlations between BMI, and apo A-I and SBP were higher than those for %BF and TST. The results were similar across the sexes. The correlations between each of the three measures of body fatness, and blood lipids and blood pressure were highest in children with greatest BMI and %BF. When analyses were adjusted for the three body fatness measures, %BF showed stronger associations than did BMI or TST with blood lipids and blood pressure, with the exception of apo A-I and SBP, which were more closely associated with BMI. %BF from BIA is more strongly associated than either BMI or TST with most of the blood lipid fractions in schoolchildren aged 8-11 years.

Research has demonstrated that adolescents who actively commute have higher levels of physical activity (PA), which have declined precipitously over the past 30 years. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of active commuting to school; and to identify barriers associated with active commuting. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1672 students (46.8% boys and 53.2% girls) from 11 to 17 years of age in Caxias do Sul/RS, Brazil. The students were asked to answer questionnaires about active transport, PA, and sedentary behaviors. They also completed a cardiovascular fitness test and body composition measurements. The study used a multivariate Poisson regression analysis. Limb volumes, as would be estimated by the widely used right circular truncated cone model (right circular frustum), were analytically compared to volume estimates that would be obtained if limbs were represented by an elliptical cross section. A general expression for the ratio of circular to elliptical limb segmental volumes was developed in terms of the ratio of minimum to maximum limb radial dimensions. Analytical results showed that in general the elliptical representation resulted in smaller calculated limb volumes, with the difference increasing as the ratio of minimum to maximum limb dimension became smaller. However, differences in estimated limb volume between circular and elliptic representations were less than 5% if the minimum to maximum limb dimensions at measured circumference sites were greater than 0.64. In a cross-sectional study of growth, 5,155 children (2,591 females, 2,564 males) from the town of Zagreb (Croatia) were measured. Four traits of linear dimensionality (stature, sitting height, arm and leg lengths) were studied in the age span of 3 to 18 years. A significant average annual increase of all four anthropometric parameters were observed up to 14 and 15 years of age in girls and 16 years of age in boys, showing that girls had a shorter growing period. In the prepubertal period until 9 years of age, gender differences were negligible. At the age of 10, boys were overgrown by girls in all parameters due to the earlier onset of puberty in girls. The growth gains for girls, when compared with those for boys, show a different pattern across variables. The female growth advantage remained in a two years period for the limbs length, but in a three year period for stature and the longest, for 4 years, for sitting height. The effects of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) on bone in paralyzed areas are well documented but there are few data for the importance of the level of injury in the decrease of mechanical strength in paralyzed legs. The aim of the present study was to describe bone loss of the separate compartments of trabecular and cortical bone in spinal cord injured men and to compare possible changes in mechanical properties of tibia with the neurological level of injury. Fifty men were included in this study: 39 had complete SCI in chronic stage. As chronic stage, we considered paraplegia >1.5 years (yrs). Men were separated as follows: Group A (18 men, high paraplegia: Thoracic (T)4-T7 level, mean age: 33 yrs, duration of paralysis: 5.9 yrs) and group B (21 men, low paraplegia: T8-T12 level, mean age: 39 yrs, duration of paralysis: 5.6 yrs) in comparison with 11 healthy men as a control group (C) of similar age, height, and weight. OBJECTIVE In the present study we aimed at investigating leptin levels in professional male athletes who have been exercising regularly for a long time and leptin levels in healthy sedentary males. METHODS The study included 10 male professional football players and 17 healthy sedentary males. The relations between groups in terms of leptin levels, Max VO2 levels, blood lactic acid levels before and after exercise and effort durations were investigated. RESULTS It was found in the study that although BMI of professional male athletes was higher than that of the healthy sedentary males, leptin levels of the former were significantly lower (p<0.01), while VO2Max levels (p<0.05) and test periods (p<0.01) were significantly higher than those in the latter. As for lactic acid levels after exercise and between groups, these were also higher in athletes, but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The present study measured the position of the greater palatine foramen relative to adjacent anatomical landmarks in Brazilian skulls. The perpendicular distance of the greater palatine foramen to the midline maxillary suture in Brazilian skulls was about 14 mm and the distance of greater palatine foramen to the incisive foramen was approximately 36 mm. The distance of greater palatine foramen to the posterior border of the hard palate was approximately 3 mm, and the mean angle between the midline maxillary suture and the line from the incisive foramen and the greater palatine foramen was 22.71 degrees . In almost 70% of the cases, the greater palatine foramen opened in an anterior direction. The mean palatine length was approximately 52 mm. In the greater majority of the skulls (93.81%), the greater palatine foramina were opposite or distal to the maxillary third molar. To describe the nutritional outcomes of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in a village-level intervention. This observational longitudinal study on 179 children aged <3 years was conducted in seven tribal blocks of Central and Eastern India with SAM managed in a comprehensive day care program. 76% children with SAM showed improvement over a 4-6 months period with 37% shifting to normal anthrometric status. There was sa significant shift in Z scores. This community-based intervention showed fair results for management of children with SAM at village level.
