One drawback of the Line of Balance (LOB) method is the unavailability of commercial software featuring its fundamentals. Studies pointed out this drawback as a factor that prevents a more frequent use. Recognizing the potential of the LOB method for managing construction projects, the objective of this paper is to propose a methodology for modeling Line of Balance schedules using CPM software like MS Project®. Previous researches developed an integrated Critical Path Method (CPM) and LOB model in an analytical nongraphical manner. This paper advances LOB modeling one step further to deal with other possible logical dependencies between activities. The presented framework can be used to develop a scheduling model that can link input and output data to commercial scheduling software; MS project®. The results of model application on a case study show the model ability in dealing with all possible relations with lags between activities and data transfer to MS project®.

Success of major embankment dam construction projects is measured by the enormity of optimizing costs and schedules of selected heavy equipment based on their operational analyses. In this paper, the main objective is geared towards developing a knowledge-based decision support system for optimizing costs of heavy earthmoving operations and corresponding linear schedules at early design stages. Also, the proposed system is capable of generating an automated linear schedule based on stochastic scheduling techniques. Thus, a meta-heuristic simulated approach utilizing a metropolis algorithm is implemented to assist in generating optimized line-of balances. The successful implementation of the proposed system will provide the user with optimum fleet of equipment for performing earthwork operations and linear scheduling for strategic planning purposes. Towards the end, an actual dam construction project is utilized to numerically validate the proposed system and quantify its degree of ...

Thailand has entered aging society and many organizations, both public and private started to pay more attention to older employees. Aged employees played more important roles in organizations today as they can be the main human resources of organizations that are full of skills and experiences. The paper, hence, aimed to 1) study the level of work efficiency of aged governmental officers; and 2) to study the relationship between motivating factors and work efficiency by applying the quantitative research method, using questionnaire as a main data collection. The sample was 170 governmental officers aged 55 years old and above. The finding presented that aged governmental officers had a high level of work efficiency, and human resource practices that correlated with work efficiency were compensation (0.326), followed by fair performance evaluation procedure (0.267), and recognition and respect (0.231) respectively at the significance level of 0.01.

To protect workers' safety and health at the construction site is becoming a core value of the construction site. A safer working environment is created when risk factors on site work are recognized in advance. This study targets the worker's 1-day cycle activity in Linear Scheduling. In addition, this study suggests a Bayesian network model that presents risk factors and probability of accidents. Accidents come down to a final disaster through causal relationship from various existing risk factors. The physical risk factors of the workspace are the most direct cause of accidents. This study uses the Bayesian network model to compare the probability of accidents caused by changes in the safety environment of the work from the risk factors that have been eliminated and those that have not been eliminated. Statistical probability values confirm that accident risks can be remarkably reduced when all possible risk factors are reviewed and eliminated in advance.

A well-planned construction schedule not only helps in outlining the pace of work but also how the work will get done. Two different kinds of project scheduling methods are employed for a sample road construction project; Critical Path Method (CPM) and Linear Scheduling Method (LSM). The aim of this study is to briefly evaluate and compare network programming techniques and linear scheduling techniques for a sample road construction project, by comparing Critical Path Method (CPM) and Linear Scheduling Method (LSM).

1 2 3 Construction projects are criticised for overrunning time and cost. Previous studies have identified ineffective planning and scheduling as the most frequently cited cause of delay. Moreover, earlier research debated that network-based planning methods are not suitable for projects with repeating activities. Linear scheduling was argued to be a better tool for simulating projects with repeating activities, such as railways, tunnels, roads and infrastructure. Research efforts on schedule quality and development measurement were devoted to network-based scheduling methods. This study critically reviews current programme quality evaluation models in the literature; the review outcomes are used in interviews with four industry experts to identify suitable criteria for assessing linear schedules. There were 23 criteria confirmed that were then arranged into six groups. Based on the interviews, a questionnaire was distributed, and responses were obtained from 125 participants. Results indicated a high level of agreement on the importance of the defined criteria. They are subsequently ranked according to relative importance. The results show that contractual measures are ranked highest and duration estimation second. In addition, a relationship between level of knowledge and importance of using linear schedules was identified. The study proposes a framework for assessing development level and quality of linear schedules.

The construction industry is of high importance to the economy of most countries. However, it is notorious for projects overrunning time and cost. A plethora of research has been conducted to define causes of delay in completing construction projects. These studies employed a wide variety of analytical methods to statistically conclude the most precise ranking of causes of delay. Moreover, the delays for construction projects differ from one country to another and even between types of project within the same geographic location. The aim of this study is examining factors contributing to delays of infrastructure projects in Qatar.. A comprehensive quantitative literature review was carried out on neighbouring Gulf countries. The causes of delays are identified from literature and used in exploratory interviews with industry experts in Qatar to investigate the relevance of each cause. A survey questionnaire was prepared and was subject to pilot interviews prior to issuing it to practitioners, including clients, consultants, and contractors. Results shows that over 80% of infrastructure projects suffers from delay with an average delay of 25% and the top factors were: long response times from utility agencies; major changes in design during construction; ineffective planning and scheduling; ineffective control of progress, and; changes in the scope of projects. Construction projects need to adopt planning and scheduling methods that deal with its dynamic and changing nature to create robust programmes with buffers to deal with uncertainties.

Construction projects are often criticized for over running time and cost. Previous studies often identified ineffective planning and scheduling as the most frequently cited cause of delay. Schedule development usually starts in the tendering stage of projects and gets further developed upon contract award to establish project baselines. They are subsequently used for planning work along with the required resource, progress monitoring and reporting, forecasting and determination of extension of times, if necessary, for completion. Problems that become apparent during the assessment of construction claims and disputes emphasizes the importance of producing high-quality baseline schedules. Several criteria have been identified to measure schedule quality through various initiatives and models. This study critically reviews existing schedule quality assessment models in the literature; outcomes of the review are used as the basis for interviews with industry professionals to identify potential areas for enhancement. There were 23 established criteria validated by questionnaire with 47 participants. Survey results indicated a high level of agreement with the defined criteria. These factors are ranked according to their relative importance. Rank correlations between owners, consultants, contractors and subcontractors are then conducted to measure the degree of rank correlation between different parties. The results suggest that contractual measures are of the highest rank and duration estimation comes second. In addition, a high degree of ranking correlations between all parties is observed.

The purpose of this paper is to present modern ways to manage time, resources and progress in a large-scale project. Over the last ten years, new project management techniques and tools have appeared such as concurrent engineering, Continuous Acquisition Lifecycle Support (CALS) and Engineering Data Management System (EDMS). The world downturn of the early 90s influenced project management: increasing constraints on time and budget and more external direction on spending that, for example, requires sophisticated sub-contracting practises. However, the evolution of the software and hardware market makes project control tools cheaper and easier to use. All project groups want to have their scope of work considered as complete projects and to control them themselves. This has several consequences on project staff behaviour concerning project control, and has to be taken into account in every planning process designed today. The system described will be at the heart of the planning and ...
