An investigation was carried out to study the effect of intercropping spice crops (ginger and turmeric) on growth, physiological aspects and yield of elephant foot yam. Sole crop of elephant foot yam was grown and between the inter-row spaces ginger/turmeric was intercropped in single/double row planting. Spacing of 90 x 90 cm between elephant foot yam and 25 x 25 cm for intercrops was adopted. Growth parameters were recorded from sole crop of elephant foot yam. Maximum fresh weight (918.48 g) and dry weight of the plant (107.68 g) were observed in elephant foot yam with single row turmeric. Superiority in physiological parameters like leaf area index (1.88) and harvest index (47.09%) was recorded in elephant foot yam with single row turmeric and sole crop of elephant foot yam respectively. Remarkable variation was observed in the performance of elephant foot yam-spice intercropping system under sloppy foothills of Imphal East.

During the year 2013 from May to November initial study under sloppy foot hills of Imphal-East, Manipur was conducted on acridity free elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus campanulatus Roxb. Blume) cv. Gajendra
intercropping with spice crops (ginger and turmeric) for yield efficiency. Elephant foot yam (13.02 t ha-1), turmeric
(42.84 t ha-1) and ginger (36.51 t ha-1) were recorded highest yield as sole crops. Among the intercropped treatments maximum land equivalent ratio (1.43) and elephant foot yam equivalent yield (37.91 t ha-1) were recorded in elephant foot yam intercropped with double row of turmeric. The result clearly indicating that nonacridity elephant foot yam cv. Gajendra intercropped with double row of turmeric would be appropriate for providing nutritional security in addition to profitable returns under sloppy foot hills of Imphal-East.

Amorphophallus muelleri Blume synonym of A. oncophyllus (porang) is one of the species of porang that grows in Indonesia, especially in East Java. It has a high economic value because the tubers contain glucomannan. Earlier work reported that harvest timing and length of storage affected secondary metabolite containing on plants. The study objective was to determine the glucomannan content of porang at 1, 2 months before dormant, at dormant and length of storage time (1 and 2 months after dormant) at room temperature. Glucomannan was isolated from fresh tubers to easier removal of the impurities and obtain the high purity of glucomannan. The highest obtained glucomannan was determined its functional groups using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The highest glucomannan content was derived in tubers taken at dormant compared to before and after dormant. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of functional groups that compose the glucomannan compound.
