Captain Ambrose (Alec Guinness), despite coming from a long line of seafarers, is a captain without a ship, an easily seasick officer who buys an amusement pier and begins to return it to shipshape order. But local officials try to thwart him, setting in motion comic events that will send Ambrose out to sea to prove his mettle.
