Apu lives near the Ganges River with his mother, Sarbajaya, and father, Harihar. After another sudden tragedy, Apu and his mother return to Bengal. Apu begins to attend the local school and, within a few years, receives a scholarship to pursue his studies further in Kolkata. As Apu acclimates to life in the big city, Sarbajaya struggles with her son's absence.
