Introverted Jodie Greenwood (Jane Horrocks) lives with her domineering mother (Imelda Staunton) and her equally hen-pecked sister Beth (Brenda Fricker). Jodie has fallen for an older doctor (Jonathan Pryce), but her mother disapproves and does her best to stifle the relationship.
