Jane (Frances McDormand) is a record producer trying to come up with a song for her band, whose lead singer Ian (Alessandro Nivola) is her younger lover. When Jane's son Sam (Christian Bale) and his fiance Alex (Kate Beckinsale) turn up, people begin to explore their relationships and realise the tight control they have of their lives.
