When a young Japanese woman is found murdered outside a small Florida town in December of 1941, hard-drinking police chief John Haleran sets out to unravel the mystery. A trail of cryptic clues leads him to a nearby U.S. military base, where he learns that what appears to be a simple homicide is actually far more ominous.
