During a routine training exercise, a U.S. submarine collides with a Russian craft. As the ship makes its way back to shore - where the captain will be court-martialed - they find themselves being pursued by another Russian sub which has been taken over by terrorists. The dispirited U.S. crew suddenly finds that the fate of the free world hangs in their hands as they must prevent the terrorists from reaching American shores.
