One of the unforeseen benefits of the first Pink Panther movie was the popularity of the cartoon cat from that film's credits sequence. Added on a hunch by director Blake Edwards and concocted by the DePatie-Freleng animation team, the slinky pink feline immediately spawned his own series of theatrical cartoons, first made for theatrical release and later for television/theatrical.

The Pink Panther is a heroic, moral cartoon cat with pink fur and the manners of an English aristocrat. He only becomes flustered or angry at obtuse or offensive humans who try to disrupt his existence, or at troublesome gadgets, rodents, or insects. In most of his cartoons, he stumbles into a difficult situation and stoically endeavors to make the best of it.

The Pink Panther TV show starting in 1969 joined the theatrical shorts with newly made shorts, later released theatrically too, while adding a laugh track: three theatrical cartoons per episode, two with the Pink Panther, sandwiching another character's short, for example one featuring the Inspector, a cartoon version of the accident-prone, bumbling French detective, Inspector Clouseau, played in movies by Peter Sellers.

The saga gathered in The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, all the 124 cartoons, plus extras would have to be considered the ultimate such collection, and more than the average fan could handle in a few sittings. But they're all here. (less)
