She commenced her career in theater and subsequently went on to appear in television roles, debuting in 1967, in the soap opera, Bellbird. However, it was her role as top dog, Bea Smith, in the acclaimed classic Network 10 soap opera Prisoner (aka Prisoner: Cell Block H) which earned her worldwide recognition. She appeared in the first five seasons and received several award nominations, including 3 Silver Logie wins and 2 Gold Logie nominations, as well as a Penguin Award win (shared with Prisoner co-stars). Lehman has also appeared in the television series' Homicide, The Flying Doctors, Blue Heelers, All Saints, and the Australian version of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2016.
