As I said previously, it was the first time I went in England and I heard several times before my arrival that London is a very open-minded city with a lot of cultural facilities and inhabitants from all around the world. Despite that, I was very surprised when I discovered this city. Indeed, London is a very cosmopolitan city where you can discover several cultures and meet people from different nationalities. I visited some of the most famous sites in London, as the Tower Bridge, the Shard, Westminster and the Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and several parks for example, but it seems that there are so many things to see and to do in London so I will never be able to say that I saw all the interesting things in London.
When I was visiting this, I was able to see that you can find a multitude of building sites in the city, so it seems that London is everyday a different city. I searched some information about the construction sector and it appears that if we compare it to France, there is almost the same proportion of inhabitants in United Kingdom than in France (66 million in France and 65 million in the UK) but there are only 1. 16 millions of employees in the French construction sector against 2. 1 million in the UK construction sector). The construction sector is continually increasing in the United Kingdom, and I think we can make an analogy with the London city. Indeed, it seems that this city is always growing, there is always lot of people of different countries and cultures and it is very busy, especially at the rush hours.
Another thing which surprised me about the construction in London is that it seems that there is not a real harmony between the different buildings in several places of the city. One pertinent example is the Gherkin, a modern skyscraper located at the centre of the city and which represents a good example of contemporary architecture. This skyscraper is located next to the St Helen church, so it creates discordance and it is a good example of the London’s architecture. In fact, it seems that the regulations concerning the construction in the city are not very strict. For that reason, I can’t say that all the skyscrapers that I was able to see are really beautiful, but they are very impressive.
In London you can easily enrich your mind, as there is a multitude of interesting museums such as the British museum, the Victoria and Albert museum, the Science museum or the Natural History Museum for example. Plus, they are all free so you can easily visit them several times and it contributes to promote the access to culture for all. Another great aspect of this city is that all the districts are different, for example you can find Chinatown, where you really believe that you are in China, just next to Piccadilly Circus with its illuminated signs and its various theatres and musical comedies. It contributes to create a big contrast between these two opposite cultures and you can have the impression to be in two different countries at the same time. I also visited Cambridge during a weekend, it was a very interesting city and there were also several things to do there.
In England, it seems that the social life and the “pub culture” take a more important place in the life of the inhabitants than in France. Every day, after work it is possible to see that a major part of the pubs in the city are full of people. Plus, I was able to see several times, usually in the week-end that the sport is almost a religion here, especially the soccer. You can see this effervescence in pubs when sports events are broadcast. During my internship, I had the opportunity to assist to two Premier League fixtures of the Crystal Palace Football Club, based in the South of London, and it confirmed my impressions.
