Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
This letter is in response to the announcement posted on your webpage regarding the PhD studentship currently available under Professor XXX in the Neuroscience of Human-Robot Interaction starting in 2017. I am interested to apply for this position and I believe my academic background and experience are well suited for the needs of this endeavour.
I am currently working towards a Master in Biomedical Science and specializing in Clinical Human Movement Science at XXX University in the XXX. My early interest and curiosities in brain activity and connectivity motivated me to seek out ways to be involved in neuroscience research. The curriculum of my course modules has also covered a range of topics in neuroscience. My current research project, under the supervision of Professor XXX in the XXX Institute, focuses on detecting selective attention using noise modulated auditory speech stimuli from EEG. The results of this current project will be used for further research in Brain Computer Interface as a communication tool for people with severe motor disabilities, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). During my master program, I also had an opportunity to work on a TMS project under the supervision of Professor XXX in the XXX-umc. My topic of interest was motor cortex topography of TMS induced finger forces. The research aimed to Measure topographical pattern of cortical structures to better understand cortical reorganization seen in movement disorders like focal hand dystonia. These experiences have heightened my passion for the world of neuroscience and offered me valuable insight into mysteries behind human brain.
The four-year undergraduate program in Biomedical Engineering in XXX, formed the basis of my perseverance towards achieving an in-depth knowledge in the field of Biomedical Engineering. The interdisciplinary nature of Biomedical Engineering had convinced me in taking this decision as it is the ideal choice for an exciting research career especially in the field of human and machine interaction. My work experience as a quality control manager also has given me a great opportunity to work beyond the academic area and pushed me to be more and more astute in my work.
As my curriculum vitae indicates, I have been exposed to excellent opportunities concerning research through a series of projects. My problem-solving and analytical skills have flourished and I have expanded my network of experts within several relevant fields. At the same time, I am confident of contributing originally to the ongoing work at your department by working under the guidance of the distinguished faculty, I shall certainly be able to exploit my potential to the fullest.
I would, therefore, feel obliged to be able to secure admission in your prestigious university and pursue this PhD position. I am sure that I will match all the credentials and will be able to maintain high standards at your university and also be a useful researcher in Professor XXX’s team.
With regards,
XXX
