Dear Selection Committee,
I am writing to express my great interest in applying to the PhD program in Physics with
specialization in Geophysics, starting in September 2019. I would like to provide further
information in support of my application.
I got my bachelor’s degree in geophysical engineering at the University of Simon Bolivar
in Caracas, Venezuela. I studied one year at the University of São Paulo as an exchange
student and I am currently working towards my MSc in computational geophysics with
specialization in seismic migration and full-waveform inversion, at the Federal University
of Rio de Janeiro. I have also worked as a Teacher Assistant, instructing courses such as
"Mathematical Methods for Civil Engineering", and as a Research Assistant this year in a
joint project with Brazilian multinational Petrobras, in which I helped to develop a new
regularization strategy that encompass geological features for inverse problems in geophysics.
Since my undergraduate years, I have developed a keen interest in seismic inversion methods,
a captivating subject that lies in the intersection of physics, mathematics, geology and high
performance computing, and poses partly answered questions in each of these disciplines.
In particular, the full-waveform inversion method is still a highly fertile field in exploration
geophysics and one of the areas of greatest interest in the oil and gas industry. Based on
this fact, and in my inherent passion for obtaining high-resolution volumes of subsurface
properties from measurements of seismic wavefields, I have determined that I want to delve
deeper into the understanding of such complex and crutial topics. On top of that, some
of the latest contributions on least-squares migration and simultaneous-source waveform
inversion developed at the University of XYA have provided me motivation to pursue
PhD studies at this institution.
I consider that this prestigious program is extremely suitable to my career plan since it
covers the most advanced topics in both applied and non-applied geophysics and provides the
most updated resources for researching in an excellent multidisciplinary and multicultural
environment. Moreover, taking such a life-changing step will allow me to learn from and work
alongside outstanding professors and some of the most influential geoscientists nowadays,
inspiring me to become the subject-matter expert I want to be in the near future.
I want to grow further as a geoscientist, and I am strongly convinced that through this PhD
program, I could make important contributions to seismic data imaging and inversion. I am
sure that I will meet all requirements and will be able to maintain University of XYA’s
highest standards of excellence. It would be an immense honor to have such an amazing
opportunity.
