I'd like to just take a minute to comment here. This is my last illustrated story page for Mission Files and I want to look back on the origins of this. Most of you know me through the DeviantUniverse and my various characters there. Well, I have been on DeviantArt longer than the DU has been around, and so has mja42x . When I first saw his character, Agent 42x, I was hooked! I read all of his adventures he had posted and even some he had on another website. I talked to him and we became these sort of long distant friends who have never met face to face.
At the time, I think, mja42x was involved in something called the Secret Wars, run by Kostmeyer . It was a huge collaborative project with various creators, and I once again stayed on the sidelines and watched. I felt like I had arrived a little late to the party, and, having not gotten in on the fun from the first, I was content to just read and enjoy what I saw. I loved the stories and everyone's individual takes on this sort of comic book RPG. I resolved that I wanted to collaborate with mja42x on a story with his characters. Even if it was just me illustrating his characters, or if it involved some of my original characters...whatever! I wanted to create a spy story with this creator!
But then, something else happened: The Deviant Universe! This was everything that Secret Wars was, but it had more rules to keep it together, it was diverse and growing and seemed to have a community of creators I wanted to get to know and collab with. I joined immediately, but my hope all along was to get a chance to collab on a spy story involving Agent 42X.
One thing led to another and NINE YEARS went by! Nine years of adventure and world building and action and just plain FUN! My collab with mja42x got put on the back burner, but who cares! This was a blast! I was learning so much about how I wanted to make comics and was allowed to experiment with ideas. I enjoyed every minute of it! But still at the back of my mind was that idea of a collab to continue the story of Slade.
So, once the DU sort of settled down and the main narrative was completed, mja42x approached me with the idea of a collab with Agent 42x and The Mighty American! I took to this project with guns blazing (literally!)! I don't think I realized I would eventually be drawing the moment that Agent 42X retires, but I'm glad I got in on his career before he did.
This project has taught me a lot, building on what I learned in the DU. I don't want to say that this is my Magnum Opus, because that implies that I won't try to someday top my performance here, but it is definitely something I consider a masterpiece of mine.
I want to thank mja42x for this opportunity and for letting me play with his toys for a bit. I couldn't have asked for a better collaborator on this project, or any project. His guidance, communication and kick ass art have been a driving force not only for me, but for the members of the DeviantUniverse as well. Thank you.
