Its been over a year since my last entry. "Times Change Cafe" was the title of a creative writing assignment i had to do in college. We could either write poetry or prose based on that title. I wrote one act of a play about a wanderer who comes to this bar at the edge of town (how cliche, eh?) near railway tracks. During the act he gets in a brief fisticuff with a drunk and hits on the bartender, a feisty female version of Sam Malone. By the end he's still sober (he doesn't drink) but talking to the spirits of the linoleum flooring and dissapears without a trace... ...that was the last act of a play i've ever written, sadly. Think about this... I love independent films. But lately with the swallowing (and in turns mass introduction) of foreign films by studio subcompanies like Sony Pictures Classics and Fox Searchlight, I am wondering if this trend is, well a) a temporary trend and b) we, the movie going audience, are benifiting from this unprecedented exposure to films un-American. I am enjoying it... but like watching the Old Republic (had to plus Star Wars, heheh) crumble, I'm slightly anxious that this may simply be a transition toward the end of independent films. Or is it the beginning? More on this later... in the meantime, what do you think makes a film
