Synopsis
Jewel (Liv Tyler) is a beautiful drifter and each of the three guys - a barman called Randy (Matt Dillon); Randy's lawyer cousin, Carl (Paul Reiser); and a cop called Dehling,(John Goodman) - is convinced that he is the only one for her. Part security seeker, part femme fatale, Jewel plays along with all this until things get a little out of hand. Like people keep ending up dead. Which is when Mr Burmeister (Michael Douglas) arrives.
Critics' reviews
- "The smartest, funniest, most cleverly structured comedy of the year."
- "Tyler, a true beauty, gives the role a valiant try, but her range is too limited to play this amalgam of female perfection"
- "Fun, if you're inclined toward cynicism, contempt, nihilism and cool stuff like that"
- "Suggests a raunchier, cruder version of a Coen brothers comedy, but it's also a kind of honky-tonk Rashomon."
- "A curious screwball "noir," doesn't so much bend established genres as blend them into an unappetizing cocktail, where they curdle before pouring."
- "Neither as rollicking nor as wild as one had hoped, but Tyler's tongue-in-cheek noir goddess transcends cliche"
- "Feels like a film from several years ago, one of the many made in the wake of "Pulp Fiction" that tried and failed to be as clever as its progenitor."
