Synopsis
In Korea in 1952, a U.S. Army patrol is ambushed by communist soldiers. A year later, the platoon, after escaping, returns to the United States, where Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) is to receive the Medal of Honor for having single-handedly saved the platoon's life. When Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) has to give his opinion about the sergeant, he does not hesitate to say that he is a true hero. But, in reality, he finds him a very shady character: a maddening nightmare makes him suspect that the sergeant is hiding something unspeakable... Political thriller about the brainwashing of American prisoners in the Korean War. The end of filming coincided with the Kennedy assassination, so it was released a few years later. In 2004 Jonathan Demme directed a remake starring Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.

Critics' reviews
- "It may be the most sophisticated political satire ever made in Hollywood"
- "A veritable salad of mixed genres and emotional textures, this exciting black-and-white cold war thriller runs more than two hours and never flags for an instant"
- "Here is a movie that was made more than 25 years ago, and it feels as if it were made yesterday. Not a moment of The Manchurian Candidate lacks edge and tension and a cynical spin"
- "It seems a small miracle that 'The Manchurian Candidate' is able to maintain its mad balancing act as long as it does. That the film slips near the end is a sign of how very hard it is"
