Synopsis
Inspector Maigret, urgently summoned to the Quai d'Orsay, goes there with Major Janvier. They find Mademoiselle Larrieu in a state of shock. That same morning, she discovered the bullet-riddled body of Monsieur Berthier-Lagès, a renowned former ambassador, whom she had served for 46 years. In the victim's apartment, Maigret and Janvier come across thousands of letters. The diplomat had been corresponding romantically for fifty years with the Princess de Vuynes, whose husband, by a strange coincidence, has just died. Confronted with members of both families and the suspicious silence of Mademoiselle Larrieu, Maigret encounters one surprise after another.
