In this romantic comedy, New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) suddenly finds herself engaged to the city’s most eligible bachelor, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey). But Melanie’s past holds many secrets, including Jake (Josh Lucas), the redneck husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her. Bound and determined to end their contentious relationship once and for all, Melanie sneaks back home to Alabama to confront her past, only to discover that you can take the girl out of the South, but you can never take the South out of the girl.
Critics' reviews
- "A romantic comedy so rote, dull and predictable that it makes You've Got Mail seem innovative and fresh."
- "Unbearable were Witherspoon not such a genuinely attractive performer"
- "Witherspoon has charmed her way through weak material before, but she's too inexperienced to save the character from director Andy Tennant"
- "Trying to resist Reese is like trying to resist Reese's Pieces: They're always the same but you can't help yourself."
