Synopsis
4th entry in the series "Six Moral Tales" by Eric Rohmer. Left to his own devices when his fiancée goes to London, Adrien decides to spend his vacation experimenting with monastic life in the peace and quiet of a large house. However, the villa already has two occupants: his friend Daniel, an artist, and Haydée, a woman he does not know. Haydée collects lovers and comes home at all hours of the night, disturbing Adrien in his ascetic pursuits. He pushes her into his friend’s arms, but Daniel soon moves on. Adrien's will then begins to weaken and he is on the verge of giving in to Haydée's charms. (FA)

Critics' reviews
- "[It ]hasn’t a very sure sense of the ridiculous, or much love, and Rohmer’s command of a wry style all his own hasn’t yet gathered itself to a point."
- "Almendros captures the beauty of Politoff and the scenery with an acute sense of detail."
- "It's as if the film were a kind of living notebook for what Rohmer was to do later, with greater ease and refinement."
- "Wryly and delightfully witty."
